It wasn't just Kobe and Shaq feuding that ended their title run. The both of them along with the rest of the Lakers squad were getting tired of Phil and his whole "zen master" mind games. Shaq and Kobe have both spoken on this as well. By the time the 2004 season rolled around, they had practically tuned Phil out.

@@jeremiahlewis4630 This is a story from Phil Jackson ill make it quick. Shaq was injured for a stretch of games. This turned into Kobe averaging 40 for a month. Phill calls Kobe in and says, “Hey Kobe we need you to dial it back so we can keep Shaq involved in the offense. When he’s having a good offensive night he plays better defense.” And Kobe obliged.... I don’t understand where that narrative came from. It definitely didn’t come from anyone on the team. That’s a media thing. Shaq says they’d talk shit about each other to the media in the locker room then look across the room and wink at each other so... I think people should let go of that narrative now. I feel like they maxed out at the 3 championships they won. It was at that point where Kobe knew it was now or never. If Shaq stayed it would never be his team so Kobe gave the ultimatum, either he leaves or I do and I dont blame Kobe for his Alpha mentality of wanting to be the top dog and leader of his own team. Kobe's one championship against the Celtics means more to him than the rest of his championships combined not just because of the caliber of the opposition, but because he was the general leading his soldiers. Again, just my opinion.

I feel you but I disagree with you slightly. The reason Kobe made it clear he did want to play with Shaq but more importantly wanted Shaq gone. Kobe could of went to another team. However there were some good players that could of took Kobe's spot in 2004.

They could only win 3 rings. The refs and David Stern bailed them out in '02 against the Kings, Duncan crushed them in '03, and the Piston almost swept them in '04. What Shaq would have stopped being over weight and start doing yoga and eating right like Kareem in his 13th season?

This isn't 100 percent accurate. Kobe was a free agent at the time and told the lakers that it's me or Shaq. He was threatening to sign with the bulls or clippers. Kobe said that he had to get shaq traded out of LA in order to get out of Shaq's shadow. With Shaq there it would always be his team and Kobe would always be robin to Shaq's batman. In order for Kobe to ever make it and be considered a top 10 player of all time he had to do it without Shaq. That is how Kobe thought, he wanted to be the undisputed Alpha

If you want the real Shaq Kobe story go read “three ring circus” by Jeff pearlman. You’ll get the real, Shaq and Kobe hated each other and Kobe said he didn’t wanna play with Shaq anymore after the 04 finals. Kobe had a deal done with the Clippers if the Lakers brought Shaq back, the traded Shaq and Kobe remained a laker.

That’s an awful book, not the “real story”. Jeff Pearlmann is the writer version of Nick Wright - he has an agenda and always hated Kobe Bryant. He interviewed every person he could find who might say something bad about him, and ignored anyone else.
