I needed a stable way for sharpening my chisels and hand plane blades so I built this small jig (honing guide) which basically consists of two pieces of wood that clamp the irons, with wheels underneath.
I used a block of cherry and two big bolts with nuts for tighten everything and a piece of leather inside to increase the grip.

I’m going to make one of these but with a slight modification. It would be stronger if it had 2 holes drilled completely through the lower piece and then had 2 bolts epoxied in place instead of the nuts. That would mean you could use wing-nuts to clamp the blade in place.

Really nice, but i wouldn't trust that glue, why You didnt put nut from other side(under the wheels)? And drill a screw sized hole? You wouldn't even need that glue. And wheels woud hide the nuts. :)

Do you find that the run out (the play) on the wheels affect the sharpening? There seems to be some wobble on the wheels which is part of the manufacturing process. I too have casters, all of which have some wobble/wiggle to them.

Any load is always better handled in compression rather than in shear mode, so if you place the nuts on the opposite side I.e. towards the wheel side the structural integrity of the system would be better and glue or epoxy would hold better.

6:14 You could just sharpen a piece of metal tube and punch out the hole! Much quicker. Nice design, I'll be copying it! Stay safe!

Or you could just drill the holes after making sure the leather was clamped down.

you said it, mini wheels :) or mini caster wheels...I don't think they have a specific name, found it on my local depot, they have it in different sizes, you can search on amazon also

You can buy these on ebay fron Chinese suppliers for delivery to the UK. I have ordered some and have received a confirmation email from supplier. This is a good sign that i will receive goods soon (hopefully). Search "castor wheels or furniture wheels.

I appreciate the quality of your work and the end product. Much simpler than many I've seen on YT. Leaving out the background sound track would make it an even more enjoyable video. A suggestion only. To me, repetitive sounds like you included a distraction AND I can turn off the audio myself. When there is no narration in any part of the video, a screen note saying so would be a nice touch. Blessings to you, all those you love and to all who love you.

Aren't those wheels a bit far apart to fit on a grinding stone? Or even if you're using sandpaper, wouldn't it have to be needlessly wide, and screw up the edge if one of the wheels goes off the sandpaper? Or do you just keep the wheels off the stone/sandpaper altogether?

Some people countersink a sharpening stone into a board so they can use the whole stone.

Unfortunately this tool has the same problem as the Stanley honing guide. The risk of the slantwise position of the chisel or plane iron makes it less usefull.

I was thinking about the same thing. Do you think it would be better to make both pieces the same size and have them sit flush to each other so you can place a small square on the edge and make sure that whatever you're sharpening is at 90 degree angle?

When making the guide it would be easy to add a stop to one side (1-3mm 1/8inc high) of the pieces of wood to place the plane blade against before tightening.
