With this drill bit sharpening tool it is possible to sharpen small drill bits without breaking them. Quickly sharpening small drill bits on a bench grinder can be very difficult. Easily too much is taken off and the drill bit becomes uneven. Also it can break during the process. Another problem is that if you sharpen it with a bench grinder the tip gets too hot and can loosen it strength or hardness. This sharpening drill bit tool works with a whetstone. This way it is possible to sharpen the drill bits in a more gentle manner. This DIY drill bit sharpening tool can be easily made.

Nice job. A simple machine that works by hand and made from surplus wood. I like it. It's too bad that you don't sell these. I would buy one. I am a fan of cordless/rechargeable tools that are recharged by drinking beer.

Thank you very much for sharing this jig. Unlike the jig for the big drill bit, the jig glides along the angle iron thereby ensuring both face are equal but how does this wooden jig help get both face sharpened equally?

I don't understand how the relief angle is formed?

Hi caskwith, very good question and thanks for asking. For the relief angle, you need to rotate the drill slightly. For example for a 135° drill the tilt angle of the jig would be about 58°. 135° / 2 = 67.5° 67.5° - 11° relief = 56.5° 56.5° + 1.5°( if you just want to sharpen the cutting age) = 58° . So if the jig is tilt about 58° and you turn the drill bit till the relief area is almost laying flat on the whetstone then you just sharpen the age of the cutting lip. I usually pull the jig a few times over the stone and then check with a magnifying glass. If necessary I adjust the drill bit. Of course the angle can be adjusted in addition by pulling or pushing it slightly out of the jig. I hope that this makes sense.

I built one and it won't sharpen worth a dmm. I've looked at the video over and have yet to figure out the drill cutting edge alignment in the jig. Are there any close up pictures of this some where?
