5 years later - Many thanks Moose - I've been struggling with obtaining sharp images with my telephoto lens. These are great tips - off to implement this afternoon.
Moose this is the first time I've watched your video's and it's good in the way you demonstrate your technique's in such an easy way to follow & understand, thank you.
I'm kind of wondering if or how this technique could be modified for use with a super-zoom bridge camera. Even with optical stabilization, you still have to have a pretty smooth hold on the machine to avoid crazy stuff. It's not really easy to balance one of these, but the times I've been able to get it under control, I've turned out some decent shots. I always try to do the best with what I have so any new techniques are great to learn. Thanks for the great lesson.
I am curious as to why Moose doesn't raise the camera up, in the Wimberly mount, to bring the camera cg up to the "up/down" rotational axis. Maybe that degree of balance is just a small point? My thinking is that the cg of the camera might (my hunch, not experience) best positioned at the center of rotation about *all three* axes. Eh?
Wow that is awesome. How important is it to turn off image stabilization when shooting on a tripod? Also with the amount of vibration you might get it when shooting at a longer focal length like 400 mm how fast of a shutter speed should you use when shooting on a tripod.?
Hi Moose! Very interesting video! Do you turn image stabilisation off when you are working with a long lens on a gimbal head? And when you are panning (with the gimbal head)? Thanks a lot for your attention!
I love this series Moose Peterson , it has already resulted in sharper images while hand holding. Question, I'm looking to buy a new tripod, I'm confused by ball head vs gimble head. Any thoughts on what to look for in picking one out?
1st, buy the best tripod you can afford. 2nd, Ballhead is best for everything up to lenses like 400f2.8 - 800f5.6 where a gimbled will do you best. That's my $.02 worth
Moose in the video "Sharpness Series Basic #3 Long Lens" that I viewed on RU-vid I was real interested in the Tripod set up that you used. Where can I purchase such a set up?
If I had 4 thousand for a camera plus 5 to 10 thousand for a long lens, then several hundred for a tripod plus 600 hundred for a gimbal head, ya I think my photos would be better too. Most of us comoners have to make do with what we have. I think I am headed out to take some pictures. Cheers.
if they slipped, would I have any photos to share with the world when I use a tripod? What you see here and on the website are the tools and techniques I use to create the images you see. It's up to you if what I do works for your photography.
Glad this technique works for you, Moose, but it's not for me. I prefer the gimbal on the left side of camera. It's all about what works for each individual photographer. It would be nice if you said that at the beginning of your vids.
Hello Moose, Thanks for returning my email. I was not sure that I was able to identify the same Tripod that was used in the training video that I am referring about. PLEASE provide me with the Brand Name and part number of that Tripod. Moose I was not able to find the link that you were referring me to; the one between your webpage and B&H. Somehow I am stuck in finding this Tripod. In that Video You stressed of the IMPORTANCE to having a Good Tripod while using with the long lenses. I used my Nikon D4 with the Nikon 400mm Prime lens and added the Nikon doubler to increase it out to 800mm when I captured the RED MOON. Later on that Tripod failed me at a very prestigious NHRA Drag Racing event. I caught the lens and camera just in time when the aluminum tripod broke at the support struts. Moose, I would be glad to show you via email my successful photo shoots using Nikon's camera and lens. I would not want to publicly show these photos though. Please email your answer via your private email address. I am seriously trying to purchase the best professional equipment for my work! Again I am referring to your Demo Titled “Sharpness Series Basic #3 Long Lens" from RU-vid. By the way I called B & H and asked the technical team member to watch the RU-vid video. I gave him the Title and asked him to tell me how I could order that unit. He said he COULD NOT LOCATE that video. He said he would have someone call me to help with my situation. They failed to contact me. So unprofessional on their part. Sincerely, Rick
