Everything changes this week… join Michael Rosenbaum and Tom Welling as we revisit one of the most impactful episodes of the series with Smallville Season 3 Episode 8: SHATTERED!
Michael reflects on his favorite Lex moment throughout the series, how he mentally prepared to play a character going insane, and why they used a real straight jacket for his psyche ward scene.
Tom points find all the flaws this week - from the Kent’s front lawn to a scene they kept where everyone was breaking character.
Oh yeah… and of course we have on the boys! Al and Miles stopped by to share their thoughts on the episode and the importance of Season 3 in the series’ trajectory.

This is the one I’ve been waiting for since Talkville began! Shattered may not be the most monumental Smallville episode, but it’s peak Smallville quality-wise: Ken Biller’s script is slick and pulsating, his direction (especially that amazing one shot at the Luthor Mansion) captures Lex’s deteriorating mental state brilliantly, the montage at the end is chilling (as is Johnny Cash’s “Hurt”) and Michael Rosenbaum delivers THE defining performance of his career and the show as a whole, IMO. How Michael didn’t win an Emmy for Shattered I’ll never know.

One weird quirk I have about Smallville is, one of my favorite "scenes" in the whole show is the "previously on Smallville" segment at the end of season 4 :) They cut together the good stuff so well and really build up to that "I am the villain of the story" line perfectly - I remember that version even more than the "real" scene haha. But it works because obviously the line makes sense at a meta, bigger-than-one-episode level too! Great delivery.

Loved Tom's catch with the scene of Lex looking through the wall in the barn at the Kents, Lionel and Chloe and Allison breaking character and laughing into Tom's shoulder, I never noticed that before! Michael's performance in this episode was absolutely incredible and why it's no wonder so many people consider him to be the best Lex Luthor by far. Lana getting crushed by the horse was really scary, it's a wonder she wasn't completely paralysed for the rest of her life, let alone in real life that could easily have killed her. The scene with the car and Clark crushing it as Lex looks on is one of my favourite scenes of the entire show, it was so well done.

This podcast was amazing! One of my favorites so far. I haven't seen this episode since about 2004ish...was better than I remembered! Michael played Lex soooo well. You really believed it. Clark too. You could see him struggling with what Lex was going through and what happened to Lana because if his actions. Going out on Hurt by Johnny Cash was so on point for what you see going on with Lex and Clark in that moment. Even Lyonel. It was perfect.

Probably my favorite thing about the episode "Shattered" and the Lex Clark relationship in general, is Clark's always having Lex's back even when everyone else has seemingly turned against him. Clark can't help but want to be there for his friend no matter what. I love it!

This has to be one of my favorite episodes. Michael's performance was beyond belief. I love seeing actors act the way Michael did. Tom had some episodes like this as well. You really felt for Lex and again, you hope he doesn't go down the path we all know he goes down. I was floored when I saw Clark stop the car in front of Lex. When it comes to the show not getting its due credit, I always look at "Superman" lists and Smallville is always near the top and so are Tom and Michael's performances. One person reviewing Dawn of Justice saying he could watch that movie and Michael saying the lines and it works. This episode has to be 2.5 roses for me. A definite must show to people who haven't been introduced to the show.

This episode is definitely one of my favorites. Michael left me completely in awe with his performance. Clark's biggest strength and weakness is always seeing the good in people, even though in this case, it almost killed Lana (who I feel very bad for). I absolutely love tbe dynamic between Lionel and Lex, especially when Lex breaks into his office. Thanks again guys ❤️

I would say Smallville had a better Clark Kent and Lex than any of the shows I've seen since. And I enjoyed Smallville loads more than any of the superhero TV shows since. That said, I thought Henry Cavill made a good Superman. As good as Tom? Debatable. But a good one none the less.

🌹🌹great ep! Michael's performance LEVELS UP in this one. beautiful irony and tragedy how Lex was fighting therapy, stalling on trusting a therapist, and the 1st one he trusts ends up betraying him so bad! You really feel for Lex. great job dancing w the thin line between reality and delusion. like when Lex jumps through window my first reaction was "didn't that kill Kyla" but Lex gets away w just a laceration. . . so he didn't actually jump through, but he did break a window. haha Lex from the barn, watching the group for that 2 seconds - I caught that too! lol thought it was weird Chloe was leaning on Clark. had to rewind it to see that it was really Alison cracking up, figured they had to keep the shot in maybe it was the only one with everyone 🤷‍♀️😂 Loved how Clark is so true to himself and willing to risk everything to help his best friend, another tragedy that Clark's (usually life saving) instincts weren't 100% and Lana gets hurt as a result That horse attack was INTENSE, lol like I thought for a sec she was gonna die! or break her back 😬 on re-watch I noticed they intubated her and I was like HOLY COW that was crazy! 😂when Clark takes down Darius "don't underestimate farmboys, bailing all that hay can make you pretty strong" FUCK YEAH lol and the look on Clark's face omfg LOVE IT 🤗 Lana was totally justified w her fear, but NOW she decides to think Clark is dangerous for her? like, yeah he got her involved... but how about the 2 dozen times Clark came out of nowhere and saves her. When she sends him away, that really stung. 💔💔 Loved that that she looks pale, no makeup, she was beautiful. the scene was so touching and well acted for both. On re-watch, I'm catching all the subtle details how Lionel really feels about Lex. His feelings are so twisted, and the tiny part of Lionel that was capable of love 12 yrs ago b4 Julian dies is now so suppressed. He views Lex as a son in name only. to Lionel, Lex is more a possession that he wants the world to admire as a reflection of his own greatness. in the end scene, I think for a moment Lionel actually does let his love come through, or at least wants to. for just a moment.

The ending “I hurt myself“ scene: years ago I just thought of it as these different people hurting. But this time I saw it as showing all the people Lionel has hurt as they pan from Lionel unhappy having to see his son locked up and out of his mind, Lex of course being so mistreated yet in part getting himself into so much trouble by always going against his father, Clark feeling so bad about his friend and Lana And of course Lana so physically broken and finally giving up hope to be with Clark. All this caused by Lionel protecting himself from the thing he did so many years ago. Lionel- he hurt himself And everyone else, but does he find that he still has feelings?
