This week Smallville goes back to 1961 as Tom Welling and Michael Rosenbaum revisit Season 3 Episode 6: RELIC!
Tom talks about the big reveals in this episode, finding out that Jonathan is the ‘actual’ chosen one, Lionel has deeper roots to Smallville, and Lana clearly would accept Clark as he is.
Michael talks about why he didn’t play a Luthor in the throwback scenes and how Chloe has done a 180 this season in terms of likability.
And of course, we get a visit from our very own Jor-el, the one and only Al Gough!

That IS Ryan lol so I don't understand your comment. Personally I find it kind of creepy that he is even there especially considering how he enters the room or how he presents himself in general every time and just sits there like some obsessed little gay boy who has nothing to say or add and entirely represents himself as if he has some sort of mental or physical disability if not both and I think he's only there because they feel bad for his lack of entire mentality etc. I truly hope they get rid of this side negative entity of worthless and useless commentary as Michael doesn't need anyone auditing him or violating his potential or etiquette as it's just a total rip off to the man as he deserves better than this wannabe Antichrist skinheaded twink bullshit. He even looks like the recent shooter on camera at a store which is going to sabotage the ratings and the entirety of the concept of SUPERMAN in general. Leave Welling and Luthor alone. Like please rid of this loser please as it's just gross and sickening anymore. Just complete loser and poser like Good God

This is one of the BEST episodes of the whole series. It’s memorable, there’s a murder mystery, a love affair, family history all coming together and secrets being revealed. The cinematography, especially the scene where Joe flies Louise into the night sky is perfection.. and later in the season this scene is replicated in a way. It’s just such a substantial and juicy episode!! I was worried y’all would tear it apart and I’m so so happy Tom loved it and Rosie came around and Al bolstered it as well. 10:41 Tom, I love this sentiment about Lana. And it made me think back to the whole show and how the women in Clark’s life really propelled him into who he became. Lana never gave up on him and sacrificed herself to save him and others - essentially; Chloe stuck by his side up until the end, helping him in metropolis, and Lois was quite literally his #1 fan and kept him safe. Pete left, Lex turned against him. It’s just so cool being an adult now to look back at how strong and capable and complex these women were! Martha was obviously great too 🥰

One of my favorite episode of the series. For me "Relic" is one of those great episodes that represent the essence of Smallville because it dive into the origins stories of the main characcters and has a piece of mythology. What I love most about this episode are the flashbacks scenes with Jo and Louise parallels with Clark & Lana, Hiram Kent & Jorel and Clark & Jonathan scenes. The reveal that Jonathan was chosen by Jorel was powerful. Tom and Kristin were fantastic in this ep they showed their range and their chemistry was intense and beautiful. The scene of Jo showing his powers to Louise by flying with her in his arms is one of my all time fave scene of the series. The actor who played Hiram Kent was so likeable, with just a couple scenes we could feel that Hiram was a good man, great casting. PS: Michael there is no such things as too much makeout scenes when the 2 actors playing Jo and Louise have this much chemistry! These were 🔥and these were the only heavy makeout scenes of this season so they really didn't overdoing it with those.

@TalkVillePodcast also Lionel Luthor history of being a poor kid from the poor neighborhood of Suicide Slums in Metropolis who kills his parents in an accident to collect the insurance money to start his business and becomes an evil businessman was Lex Luthors history In the Superman comics. I love how the show created Lionel Luthor and gave him the Lex Luthor history from the comic's and made Lex on Smallville the son of this corrupt evil man who was raised to be brutal and evil. But Lionel eventually changes his ways and becomes good. And an ally to Clark. While Lex not only becomes like Lionel but he surpassed Lionel and becomes more brutal and evil than Lionel ever was. And unlike Lionel he never regains any humanity.

Since the guys are ahead of us in the recording of Talkville episodes I think this was recorded before the episode Tom missed was released. This was quite a cool episode in that, as Tom pointed out, it’s validation of the fact that Jonathan has as important a role in Clark’s life as Jor-El does. It let the audience know that Jor-El approved of Jonathan putting himself in Jor-El’s position as Clark’s legitimate father and despite not being biologically related, there are ties between Kal-El’s family and the Kents. This further strengthened the love that Clark has for Jonathan in my opinion

I also always liked the idea how Jor-El recorded his memories in a pendant as a sort of journel. Then left it behind for his son Kal-El/Clark to eventually find. As well the big revalation at the end where Clark theorizes that Jor-El intentionally chose the Kents to find him and raise him was brilliant writing and concepts. @@RRSmurf I have been rewatching Smallville during the last few months (I'm currently up to season 6). While I think Clark began afraid that Lana would reject him at first, cuz the meteor shower killed her parents, I think Clark's reason changed over time. Spoilers below: At the end of season 3, Clark sees that Pete has been emotionally drained by keeping the secret. Pete leaves because he can't handle it anymore. Clark decided to NOT burden Lana with such a secret, so he didn't tell her before she left for Paris. By season 5, Clark proposed to Lana and told her the secret. But of course, she's killed and he reversed time to save her life. He does not tell her in the alt timeline of this episode, which caused distance between them in their relationship. Eventually, in late season 5 and early season 6, Lana grows close with Lex, who was surprisingly more willing to share with Lana than Clark was beforehand. Lana wants openness and honesty. She calls out Lex for keeping secrets too. But when Lex was possessed by Zod, Lana wasn't afraid of such power.
@vbrandy7088
@vbrandy7088 10 месяцев назад
It was both actually. Clark was afraid that Lana would see him differently and wouldn't accept him because he was an alien. It was established in season 1 & 2 that Clark felt guilty for the meteor shower that killed her parents and that he was afraid that his friends would see him as a freak if he told them. Also when he told Lana his secrets in Reckoning the first think he asked her was "do I like differently to you now?" and in the S7 premiere he told her "I can't believe I was ever worried you wouldn't understand". These were some of his biggest fears along with putting her in danger

Yeah, it's natural for him to lean into those fear-based decisions when it comes to his emotions cuz physically he knows he's pretty invulnerable... gotta keep in mind he's just a 16yr old kid at this point, having to deal w epic life altering events and still figuring out how his powers work. Fear of rejection is really powerful plus the fear that she'll get hurt if she knows... Lol it's just torture for us fans cuz we have the luxury to know it would have worked okay for them to get together in HS 💔

]This was an episode that I absolutely loved back when I first saw itt and do to this day, just watched it a few days ago. Really enjoyed it do to it's exporation of the past. Particularly Clark/Lana with Jor-El/Louise and the beautiful love story that ;lossomed between them. Also, how it gave Clark insight into who Jor-El truly was. Also for the life he started for his son, with the Luthors and Kents intertwined in the mix. Kristin and Tom also did a fabulous job playing Louise and Jor-El. Loved their scenes. Such a timeless classic this episode is for Smallville.😀❤🙏

I love this episode!!! The stars are shining between Kristin and Tom, their chemistry is out of the chart as always!!!! We can see how Clark & Lana's destiny have always been connected ❤️ she's the one. It's getting boring that Tom doesn't talk about it , I feel like they avoid talking about the Clana scenes , why ???? That's the heart of the matter, shit guys, I want to know how they feel about it

I wouldn't say they avoid clana scenes b/c sometimes they say few remarks about the relationship, it's just very brief and not consistent. But yeah I don't like when they just recap scenes and move on without talking about it in depth. Sometimes I feel like they don't realize how important and central to the show Clana's relationship is. This is why not having a woman POV (whether a female cast or writer... ) on this pod is bad cause most men don't really care about love stories they're more into the action and sci-fi aspects. Like in Relic they didn't really connect the dots btw Jo & Louise's romance and Clana's love story. I was glad that Al pointed out the fact that with Jo & Louise they wanted to show that it was fate that Clark & Lana fell for each other. But Tom & Michael made a good point when they said that Lana would accept Clark's secrets like Louise accepted Jo.

Oh my gosh I totally agree and had this thoughtfrom their first podcast episodes. .I thought about how crazy it is for them not to really go into the Clans arc where personally it was the reason I kept coming back episode after episode when it originally aired (Like them I also got a little bored of FOTW episodes. I think many women did too)...so about how loved the Clana ship was, I think a woman as a perm podcast host would really bring this angle and give the pod a well rounded viewpoint :) not that I don't enjoy listening, it's amazing to me that they are talking about the same show sometimes though! just shows how everyone appreciates different parts of Smallville :)

@@sitamankodi2273I actually liked the FOTW storylines but yeah Clana's love story was my favorite part of the series. I love listening to the pod as well but there's definitely room for improvement like a female pov would be a great addition and focusing more on analyzing the scenes in depth instead of recaping them. :)

Loved the cinematography in this episode! It was a nice break from freak of the week. I also think they were "playing" with things the audience might like to see like Clark and Lana together but in the form of Jor-El and her Aunt. Also I loved Tom's acting chops in this one! Thanks for podcast! ❤

I myself, give it 3 Roses. Acting out of character seemed like FUN for them. And whenever an acter can get a break, they are gonna take it. LOL. I can’t wait for your commentary on Asylum and Shattered. Like many in the Smallville community, I truly believe Michael is such an underrated actor and those two episodes are some of his greatest work on the show. I’m currently rewatching the show with my stepmother and my favorite one to rewatch so far was Season 4 Episode 17 “Onyx” where Michael gave an outstanding performance as Lex Luthor. Michael’s performance in that episode should be a template for James Gunn DCU’s Lex.

Relic is an episode that I've always loved so much, it's one of my favorites♥️. I love the retro atmosphere and the story between Jo and Louise is fascinating, romantic, sad and dramatic♥️. It's like watching a movie and I love Clark who relives through flashbacks of the past those moments when his biological father Jor-El lived on earth and that Clark shares by telling Lana about. Tom as Jo is fantastic he is GORGEOUS 🔥, so beautiful that he really seems from another planet♥️. But you know Tom's beauty is unreal. Plus watching and listening to Talk Ville and reliving this great episode with Tom himself today is a dream♥️. I love you Tom♥️. I don't know how many times I've seen Smallville, and I'm still watching it with the same enthusiasm today. It was a job done really well, and I will never stop admiring your talent and dedication. Smallville has impacted our lives in profound ways, channeling the power of hope and friendship through the adventures of Clark Kent. This show has created a special bond between the fans and the characters you have portrayed so beautifully. It was an incredible journey and an unforgettable experience. Keep up the amazing work you do, and I really hope there is a sequel or future project to reunite the cast. Your talk show is a pleasure to watch, and I look forward to seeing what the future has in store for you. A warm hug from Sicily, with lots of love and gratitude for all you have done with Smallville. Thank you with all my heart! 🌟

Michael and Bryce are looking at this from a strictly male perspective, which makes sense. Tom, being in the romantic scenes probably has a different perspective on them, but keeps that perspective low key. (He probably doesn’t remember? LOL) Anyway, from a female perspective this episode was great because, this is the romance that we have been waiting for between these two actors. We can’t have Clark and Lana together, yet, but because this steps out of time, we get to have a little slice of what we want to see without changing the overall narrative. It was totally a time travel rom-com episode and I loved it!!

Me personally The Relic was my favorite episode. There was just so many foreshadowing in this episode that some people may look over. This episode showed how things were destined to happen, and that the things that happened in the dark will soon come to light. Jorel takes Louise from her husband who she's not happy with Clark also takes Lana from whitney. Jorel loses the love of his life Louise to getting killed, Clark loses Lana because she absorbs kryptonite and can't come near clark. We see Lionel's father and how crooked he was and how it inevitably got passed down to Lionel and then Lex. We see How Johnathan's father was a good man with principle and that got passed down to Johnathan' and also to Clark. We also see that clark was destined to find that cave and also be in smallville because thats where Jorel has been before, it wasn't a coincidence. Jorel knew Clark would be in good hands with the Kent's because he trusted Hiram Kent. There's so much foreshadowing and gems within this episode that people miss.

Michael and tom. If you guys didn't promote better help im not sure if I would still be here today.. Its all I had when I was a kid. So I have a sense of trust with you both as silly as it sounds. And when u both mentioned better help. And when Tom said even HE doesn't like doing it sometimes yet always is happy he did after ... man thats when I knew I needed to try it out . And wow has it helped me in ways I honestly didn't believe. Just having someone give u a different perspective on stuff you keep to yourself really helps diminish the anxieties you keep in your head. This episode did some very fun stuff with the lore of Krypton and Jor-El. The idea that Jor-El got sent, somewhat reluctantly, to Earth by his own father so he could learn some things, only to then find a future refuge for his son, was a tasteful way of augmenting what already existed without putting a weird spin on it. I liked seeing him there with his full set of powers. Very cool stuff.

The balcony area in Lex's library is actually a mezzanine level and not a full second storey. In any event, some really good scenes have indeed been filmed in this space. Over the course of the series, Lex's library undergoes many cosmetic interior design changes and updates, including up in the mezzanine area. In a later season, we learn a door in this space leads up to the rooftop of the mansion. Also, the stairwell from the floor level to this balcony consists of twelve stairs. And, yes, as a TRUE 'Luthor,' I am that indeed that obsessed with the details. 😉

My one issue with the episode is the premise that Krypton had easy real-time interstellar travel just a few decades ago, but by the time Clark was sent, the best they could do was a single small spaceship for one infant rather than anyone else getting away...

I dont blame Jor-El or Louise. Minus the fact that 'Joe' is part alien, in the 1950s or 1960s, you didnt know how long you were going to live for so when you found something you loved or wanted, you went after it no matter the cost. Thats exactly what Jor-El did. He fell in love with Louise even though he wasnt supposed to and he went after her. Great job to Tom and Kristen... amazing chemistry.

Relic for me was a great episode! Tom delivered some incredible insights, and Bryce's was equally as engaging with his perspective. Ryan should definitely watch out or he soon be out of a job lol. This episode provided a fascinating glimpse into Jor-El, transforming him from the disembodied voice we knew into a multidimensional character capable of love, kindness, and doubt, much like Clark's relationship with his biological father. The Jor-El we've been accustomed to has been stern with Clark, often disapproving of his human connections and willing to break them apart in an instant. Remember how he branded his son with the Kryptonian mark as a harsh lesson? The depiction of Kryptonian technology in the episode was absolutely captivating. Its so advanced that it almost magical quality, enabling it to intricately etch symbols into walls and seamlessly download memories into Clark. Watching the tech in action one can understand why the Kryptonians are the most advance civilization in the 28 known galaxies. I also love the way Jor-El spoke about his home world, describing the breath-taking sunsets and colours that defy Earth's reality. It served as a poignant reminder of the profound disparities between Krypton and Earth. Out of the episode there is only one aspect of the episode didn't sit well with me. When Jor-El sought refuge in the barn and encountered Hiram, Jonathan's father, it seemed odd that Hiram could land blows on Jor-El, causing him to stagger. After all, Jor-El possesses superhuman strength and invulnerability. Some might argue that he hadn't absorbed enough solar radiation during his brief time on Earth, and I would agree had we not seen bullets bounce off him without him flinching and this happened prior to the Hiram incident. This inconsistency is indeed puzzling.
