After a four year break, I am shaving with my Rolls razor this week. This was my second shave this week, and both were very good shaves. I strop the blade before and after each shave.
Nice one Jim. I have a Rolls that I've never used, simply because I had no idea if it was in any condition to shave with. I may take another look at it. Thanks for the video!
Thanks. I was fortunate to get a new/never used blade with this one. I had one used and one never used. I have been really satisfied with the quality of shaves with the Rolls this week.
I started shaving with a straight about a decade ago and only used a straight for a least 3 of those ten years. Then I got lazy and used a safety razor every other shave. These days I use a safety razor most of the time, with a straight shave perhaps twice a month. At that rate, I no longer have a "rotation" with the razors and use just a couple of the dozens that I own. A 5/8" Eskilstuna and Dubl Duck get all the shave time now for the straights. I will say there's also a learning curse with various aspects of safety razors, like which blades to look for and ones to avoid and the like. As inexpensive as the blades are, I cannot wrap my head around the logic of spending $20+ a month on razors when you could spend that for an entire year of blades and for shaves just as smooth and nearly as fast as some silly and expensive 7-blade contraption. Yesterday I decided to give these Rolls Razors a go as they're pretty darn cheap. I bought two (one in excellent condition, the other NOS in box) off Ebay and I find these tutorials of extreme value while learning about them before their arrival. One thing I noticed about this video is that you're quite confident with those long strokes. Even after years of shaving with an open blade, I'm still taking those timid, little half-inch strokes. Haven't cut myself in years, so I think I'll stick to my pansy method, though I'm impressed by your style. Thanks for the video!
I think the thing I like the best about the Rolls Razor is that you can dial in the edge to whatever sharpness you desire. I've gotten them to where they were painfully sharp, like a Feather. Had to dial back a bit on my stropping with that one until it settled down.
I will think about that. Last time I did an inventory, I had over 150 razors. At my age, I need to start uncollecting razors and start a program of razor re-distribution.
