I would just add that the last part of Ruth's famous speech is that she says "Your people will be my people and your God my God." Ruth married Boaz, a relative of Naomi, whom Ruth met while she was gleaning in his fields after returning to Israel. They had a son named Obed, who had a son named Jesse, who had a son named David who became king of Israel, follows by his son Solomon. It's quite a remarkable and beautiful love story.
The fact that you take the time to read all your comments and are providing so much amazing and detailed information is such a blessing. Thank you so much.

I find this holiday particularly meaningful as a convert because of the emphasis on choosing the Torah, and the reading of Ruth who was a convert. And not a bad excuse to buy a cheesecake either 😋
I recently found out that my mother’s lineage is Ashkenazi Jewish but they stopped practicing during the Finnish Civil War. Ever since I found out I’ve been learning about Judaism: learning Hebrew, reading the Tanakh, reading about Judaism etc. I really enjoy your videos and want to thank you for the effort you put in your videos. They are very informative but you also explain Judaism in a very light-hearted and sincere manner, which I greatly enjoy. All the best!
It is also in Christianity called Pentecost and is commemoration of the receiving of the Word. It is the beginning of a 6-month harvest in this country. Odd, how we would feel so removed from the agricultural associations, because food nourishes us as the Torah feeds us and we are God's harvest. One would think that those connections would be so clearly drawn. Thanks.
@@MyJewishMommyLife They are profound because it is 50 days after Easter and is the giving of God's spirit to the world to be with us and guide us daily in our living the Word, the Torah. It is one of the 3 major holidays. There are 3 holidays and 4 festivals annually. The premier 3 holy days are the Epiphany (showing forth of God's word to the gentile world), Easter (Passover), and Pentecost (the Holy Spirit to guide us, teach us, comfort us through the living Word) for the sake of all humanity. It may have been Hugh Schonfield who said that Christianity is either Judaism's largest denomination or its biggest heresy. So much is an interpretation of texts.
@Philippa Pay - “Pentecost” in Christianity isn’t about “the receiving of the Word”. According to Christianity, Pentecost was the period when the disciples of Jesus received the Holy Spirit. I think you’re confusing Judaism and Christianity, friend. 😉
Thank you! My Jewish grandmother has been gone a long time and I want to honor my Judaism and celebrate all the holidays! Thanks for this beautiful explanation 🌷
What did isreal and the strangers living amoung them read on shavot when ruth wasnt wrote yet? Be nice to know what they did according to YHVH instructuons and not any man made traditions.
I appreciate your videos on many levels. My Great grand Father , Ephraim, escaped Germany. I am beginning to celebrate my heritage and will be celebrating Shauvot for the first time this year. Flowers and cheesecake will be incorporated now with the knowledge that the Ten Commandments bring life - eternal. So I am a Ruth. Shalom.
I absolutely love your Jewish 10 facts videos! This one was super interesting. By the way, congratulations on 21K subscribers! You truly deserve it! Thank you so much for posting.
Such beautiful customs to follow , I can imagine you as a little girl with flowers in your arms , now you have babies in them , what joy . 🌿🌺🌿 Bless you for explaining so clearly , a pleasure to listen to 💝
The Reform Jewish Community in Baltimore celebrates Shavuot. We do all night Torah study on Zoom. I love learning from my Rabbinical staff. I also do Hebrew and Judaics Class with my Associate Cantor from my soul on Tuesdays.
QUESTION? Was not ALL twelve tribs of Israel present at Mt. Sinai when the Torah given to the people of YHWH? Why do you say this is just Jewish feastable?
I enjoyed this episode, Marion. So many facets to the holiday of Shavuot, with Moses receiving the Torah on Mount Sinai and then the story of Ruth which I have always loved.
Follow up- I don’t want to be so brash and I apologize. Yes, the house of Judah does follow YAH’s feast days and we ALL need to emulate and follow HIS FEAST Day’s. Thank you for bringing this information to share GODS FEAST DAY of Shavuot.
We have always celebrated Shavuot, but not in a so formal way. We collect fruits and vegetables and set them on the dinning table, I make a big cheesecake and we say some prayers pertaining that particular day, specially after been counting the OMER (in which case we use an app cause it's a lot easier). We have read the story of Ruth on this day before, but we don't do it every year, although we should because it's just an excellent story. So this is how we celebrate Shavuot. Thank you for sharing those 10 facts!
All your message about Ruth is good. You just didn’t mention the whole words of Ruth. She said: Wherever you go I go, your people will be my people, and YOUR GOD HYWH😍will be my GOD😍👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼Yahweh TZEVAOT.😍🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼. This is the most important speech of Ruth. And whosoever would come to be part of Israel. 😇👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼🌺🙋🏻♀️Shalom
Going to be a very different Shavout this year! Especially here in South Africa since we will still be in lockdown and we wont be at shul! I am looking forward to cheese cake and cheese blintzes
I wanted to say thank you for your videos. I'm in the process of conversion and I have learned so much by watching your videos, especially now since everything has kind of been put on hold. I'm enjoying learning and finding new things to explore or ask questions about that I may not have thought about.
@@MyJewishMommyLife We simply don't know yet. I don't think it's been decided if practicing online is going to count, so to speak. So far I've missed out on Purim at synagogue through Shavuout and nobody is sure if online participation is going to be acceptable for community practice. I've been working on continuing my classes but it's just a big question mark, like so many things. Time will tell and I'm sure that whatever is eventually decided will be for the best.
@@sisterspooky I haven't changed my mind and she has not said conversion will take longer. I'm still studying Torah and going to synagogue services online and working on my Hebrew but Judaism is about community and I'm somewhat cut off from that community right now. So my Rabbi hasn't officially said I'll have to wait longer. Like so many things, she has asked for patience as we work out what will be acceptable as we move forward.
Ruth 1:16 is my favorite verse because I read it to my husband at our wedding! He's very Jewish, I was raised Christian. But on our wedding I told him that I would follow him in every regard, meaning following his lead religiously as well. That's when he teared up ❤
If you are openminded there is a rabbi who talks about the relationship, history differences and likeness of Christianity and and Judaism. You and your husband will surely enjoy them. His name is Rabbi Tovia Singer. He has a wonderful youtube channel.
Leviticus 23 .... The Appointed Festivals OF THE FATHER YAHUAH. 23 "The Father Yahuah said to Moses, 2 “Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘These are my appointed festivals, the appointed festivals of the Father Yahuah, which you are to proclaim as sacred assemblies". Numbers 15:15 15 "The community is to have the same rules for you and for the foreigner residing among you; this is a lasting ordinance for the generations to come. You and the foreigner shall be the same before the Father Yahuah".
I am Jewish, my entire lineage is Jewish and I never heard of Shavuot until just now! We celebrated Passover, Rosh Hashana, Yom Kippur, Chanuka, and Purim when I was little.
I had a thought while relistening to this video today about the milk that is consumed. When Moses came down from the mountain he found them worshiping the golden calf and being wicked in general and he BROKE the higher law that he was going to give them. He ended up getting the lesser law that we know of today. Milk could also symbolize the lesser law, since they were not ready for the higher law, or the meat. Anyway, thank you and have a wonderful Shavuot:)
@@EtreTocsin The tablets were not broken because of rage. It was like a "voided contract" in that the Jewish people would not be punished for worshipping the Golden calf and breaking the law if the law never existed
@@michaelsalih3590 This is from Exodus 32:19 When Moses approached the camp and saw the calf and the dancing, his anger burned and he threw the tablets out of his hands, breaking them to pieces at the foot of the mountain. Exodus 32:19 - www.biblegateway.com/passage?search=Exodus%2032:19&version=NIV It says he was angry then broke the tablets
Thank you, for I learn so much from your presentations, especially about this Shavuot and the reading of the Torah!!! I hope someone does the reading online because I'm sure many would like to hear the readings!
I think most Jews are less enthusiastic about Shavuot because it doesn’t line up with major Christian holidays in the fall and winter, most people are planning for graduations and summer vacations now, and most North American Jews live in urban areas, removed from our agricultural beginnings. Happy Shavuot everyone. 💐 🍰
It would be even more helpful if you could add written titles on the screen fact #1: receiving the torah fact #2: 50th day of Omer etc. thank you in advance!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. In my deeper studies about the moadim, it has become clear that the feasts are all a typology of the ancient Hebrew wedding. If you understand this then the feasts make a lot of sense. The counting of the omer is the preparation of the bride spiritually, like you would prepare your wedding dress. The giving of Torah is the ketubah. There is a good reason why the book of Ruth is read, not just for the harvest but again a typology of the wedding. Many layers to the feasts.
There's a rabbi who talks about a "wave offering" on Shavuot (Shabbat) and it is the custom of their congregation for each household to bring two *home baked* loaves of bread (not store bought) to synagogue. If a person isn't a baker he said they can buy prepared dough and bake that at home. The bread loaves are donated to the local food bank.
It's easier to go to shul on Shavuot nowadays because most have babysitting during services. Also, some have dedicated Women's Learning so the husbands can be home while the kids are sleeping and the women can teach/attend classes during the night. Also, synagogues in my city have staggered women's class times, so one can go to several classes, each in a different shul.
On Shavuot we will be staying up all night, the kids as late as they can. We will be praying, reading scripture for ourselves, pausing to hear from G_d, and talking about scripture but not our opinions, opinions from scripture proving scripture as best we can. Yes, coffee, honey, and cheeses but mostly worship to G_d and not the distracting idols of this world. This is to me the best of the best because I love our creator and I love spending time with him. I think we can make the mistake of putting even good things like friends, culture, man made teachings, man made traditions as an idol but G_d wants us to keep it simply and simply draw near to him and not religion or anything but him. Giving your first fruits is literally giving him your focus, your best, your all. It's worth it. The creator of the universe wants us to give him our time. May G_d show you new things this year as you read the story of Ruth and book of Exodus.
Please tell me why driving a car or turning on electricity is considered work and not allowed on the Sabbath. Driving is fun, and there is no work switching on a light. It is more work lighting a candle!
Lol I get how funny this seems, it stems from the idea that we don't light fires on shabbat so anything with electricity is an extension of that. I do drive on Shabbat though as I am not 'shomer Shabbat' as it's called.
This is super interesting thank you! Silly question, but if your birthday was in the period between passover and shavuot, do you not have the party then? Sorry I just thought of it and I'm curious haha
Not silly at all, I love this question! Yes most Jewish people would have a birthday party at this time but they might observe the custom of not playing celebratory music at the party.
We plan on having an all night (or as late as my little ones can stay up) scripture study game night with lots of ridiculousness to keep the littles engaged.
Wow that's amazing! Let me know how it goes, I don't think I could put off bedtime for my 1 and 3 year olds for much these days I'm so tired myself lol! Very inspired by you!
@@MyJewishMommyLife here is a link to how our party went. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-iqfeqp0Ix5c.html Thank you for all your inspiration.
Love this video I learnt so much. I am always happy to hear the history behind alot of the Jewish celebrations . Thank you !!!, You make listening so easy and your voice is captivating, not boring at all. Good job!
This is the reason why I'm kind of against holidays because we don't learn about amazing holidays like Shavuot. I just recently found out that the rapture of the church happens on Shavuot next year. So now I'm learning all about this holiday and your video was very informative. This will be my first time celebrating Shavuot.
Shalom, Shavuot is special to me this year, first time I learnt of it, and now- and every coming year because it is when Almighty God, Heavenly Father 'handed' the Torah to Moshesh and the beginning of our own learning to get to know God personally. Thank you.
This is the first year I really got unto celebrating Shavuot. I think now it’s one of my favorite holidays. Being a vegetarian it’s refreshing not to deal with meat on the menu at synagogue. And it was great to take part in Tikkun Leil Shavuot this year. We had it in a workshops session format, where you can pick what presentation you want to attend, was held 7:45pm-12am. Nice to visit, schmooze, eat cheesecake in between sessions. Topics varied Hebrew language, cantorial styles, parshat study, all kinds of topics. . I think it’s not observed like Passover and Hanukkah because the Christian counterpart to Shavuot is not celebrated in the typical Christian church(Pentecost). I like the Kabbalist book I have on counting Omer by going through the sephirot and journaling their qualities for self improvement during the weeks leading up to Shavuot.
I caught the live with Curt Landry Ministry just as he was leading his people into prayers and declarations. Then we all immersed ourselves in pools and bathtubs.
For me Shavuot is tomorrow and I I learned that you are supposed to study either Torah or just Judaism in general during the holiday, so of course I came to RU-vid. Your video was a fantastic way to kick off the Holiday! Chag Sameach!
Thank you for your informational videos… They are helping me to learn and come closer to Hashem as I am seriously considering converting to Judaism from Christianity.
Some call it a Jewish Holiday. I'm a Torah Observant Gentile. Shavuot is one of God's Holidays. It's not a Jew or Gentile. It's God's Remnant of Israel who have Faith in Yeshua and Following God's Sabbath Commandments and Feast Days. God's Blessings Y'all and Shalom 🙏🙏🙏
I'm eating lasagna for dinner on Shavuot. I've always loved lasagna and I'm surprised it is beloved by Jews, most likely because of kugel. Love your videos, keep them coming!
I loved the idea of "preparing to receive" the Torah. Is there any fasting involved in this preparation? The Islamic people are fasting now for Ramadan. It made me think -- if they can pray and fast for a false god, why can't I fast and pray for the only Almighty Elohim? (Not my intention to bash others religion) As always, is great to hear you talking about the Jewish festivities.
I wouldn't say we celebrate it, but we definitely talk about it and read stories and stuff. I have been to Temple, but its not a must do for us. I used to work at a Jewish preschool, so we would make crafts and do a special tot shabbat and stuff like that. I do as much of that with my own children as possible. It really depends on the year. Some years May is just pure insanity with all the end of school year stuff and recitals and tests. LOL. This year is something different though! LOL.
another reason y we eat dairy on shavout is bcuz until we received the Torah the Jewish ppl didn't keep kosher. but now, after learning everything about keeping kosher they needed new pots and utensils cuz nothing was kosher. so they opted for dairy cuz that can b eaten raw until they were able to make new pots to cook meat in.
My rabbi told me another reason that it isn’t that celebrated in some communities is because it usually falls during summer break for schools and so it isn’t celebrated or taught that much in religious schools!
@@MyJewishMommyLife I want to see just like how was the religious service and the party . How was your Bat Mitzvah and how were your Bar/Bat Mitzvah parties that you attended .
Your subscribers have really shot up. You deserve to have way more. I love your channel. I'm agnostic but find Judaism fascinating. I want to discover more. Lots of love Marion. Stay safe! 😘😘😘😘
