I am not very proficient in Latin, and I'm not saying that you're wrong. But I'm wondering, How exactly does changing the "A" to an "I" at the beginning of ONE of the words completely change the definition/meaning of every word, thus entirely changing the message of the "saying", which is simply a compilation of words that have a previously agreed upon and accepted definition. I'm legitimately curious to know the answer to this, because I'm not aware of any other words (specifically only referring to words in the few languages that I'm familiar with) that can change the entire meaning of subsequent words, simply by exchanging one or more letters in it, I.E misspelling it.

@@logancurl9526 Dad just passed but in Canada Latin was taught in all schools all the way up into the late fifties. He of ten referenced Latin in his conversation, as just a regular student. but so many Americans in those days were from Europe and English and Latin!! were not their original mother tongue or language.

Logan Curl I would’ve replied sooner if I’d seen it, but if you still care, here goes: there were three letters changed, not one. The initial A being switched for an I is one, the I at the end of the first word switched for a U is two, and the Q toward the end of the middle word is three. The first trouble is that there is ambiguity all over the place in Latin, with homonyms all over the place. Hence, “parati” means “prepared,” but it’s down to context whether it’s nominative (subjective) plural, or genitive (possessive) singular, and if the context changes, this may change. Secondly, “animis” is a noun (in the ablative case...English doesn’t have an equivalent..., plural) meaning “spirits;” but “inimus” is a verb (1st person plural present active indicative) meaning “we enter.” So that causes some major changes too. Finally, the suffix “-que” means “and,” but “-oue” means nothing, nor does “opibusoue.” So we have to assume “oue” is a separate word without a space, as was common for many centuries (although it would ordinarily be consistent through the whole phrase). “Oue” could a late formation plural nominative (subjective) or accusative (objective) of “ovum,” egg, or an ablative singular of “ovis,” sheep. Hence the variety of potential meanings. Latin is a very dense language compared to English, with often far fewer words used than we would use to convey a given idea; but that comes with a lot of ambiguity, and sometimes a one-letter difference will completely change how the rest of the words in a sentence fit together.

The idiot that stole it probably realized pretty quickly that he couldnt do drive-by's with a percussion revolver. Couldnt sell it to anyone in the hood so he tried a pawn shop.

My uncle had a S&W 66 stolen in 1986. It was recovered in 2004 in another state. The sheriff's dept said it's role as evidence in trial was done, please come pick up your property. For stupid reasons, my uncle was then legally unable to posses firearms, so he signed his rights over to my brother, who has it now. I've never seen a gun more mistreated, and I fully restored it. It is a great shooter, and you would never know it's history.

1) The thief or persons who held it as stolen property mistreated it. It is a 6" SS revolver. It was so thoroughly black with gunsmoke and ??? that it almost appeared to have worn blueing everywhere but under the grips. Bore was good though and lockwork in fine condition. The rear sight was half broken off. I soaked it for a week in a ziploc full of CLP mostly dissembled. Then scrubbed it all with very fine steel wool for a long time, until it looked like any other SS revolver with a normal life. I was able to find the correct sight parts after looking for a while. At the time the fine picture rear leaf was very hard to find, and generally very expensive. 2) Uncle. Background that is relevant. --- My uncle is not tactful, and that makes his life harder than it could be. He had a long standing property fight with his neighbor. The neighbor was in the wrong and made a situation that involved police. Police came and arrested my uncle for theft, and issued orders outside their authority. The law and facts were completely in my uncle's favor. (I'm an attorney, and know what I'm talking about here). The cop just went with a hunch and picked a side. He chose wrongly, and was badly embarrased and reprimanded by the judge. This lead to a grudge against my brusque uncle and the cop. Uncle a couple years later: Renter's on his rural property feed some strays intermittently. My uncle is a rough man, but with a soft spot for his cats and chickens. One of the strays sometimes fed by his renters was a large mean tom cat, which killed several of my uncle's cats, maimed the others, and killed all but two of the chickens. My uncle came up for lunch in time to see this cat stalking his favorite and last surviving cat, an older tom. He ran inside, grabbed a shotgun and shot the feral cat, and threw it's corpse off an embankment. Apparently the renter saw this, and called the cops. All this is completely legal, and reasonable. I'd have done the same. Uncle said something smartass to the renter, and similar to the cop, which was the same cop. The cop chose to charge him with cruelty to animals. Because my uncle is who he is, the prosecuting attorney was another person who had a grudge against him. I forget the reason for that one. (Life lesson. Don't be an ass.) Anyway, my uncle didn't take the thing seriously and used his business attorney short notice to mount a very crude defense to a felony charge, and came in to court looking scruffy. The jury were animal people, and my uncle looked like a jerk during the trial. The prosecutor made a big play about how many birdshot pellets were in the cat, and as though more pellets equaled more cruelty, rather than a quicker more humane death. That got him a conviction for felony cruelty to animals, and all the life hassles that go along with a felony conviction. -- and that is now off his record, and he can legally own firearms again. - Don't be an ass to people and life goes better for you.

The bigger lesson is to live life treating people kindly and politely and you are a lot less likely to need an attorney. If you do need an attorney, hire a specialist in the field who listens to what outcome you want. Take the situation seriously, and pay attention to your appearance. Impression makes a big difference when someone has to decide which of two sides he believes.

He obviously doesn't want it anymore. By introducing the holster, he has massively increased the sale price of the gun. Without the holster, the gun is much less attractive, and has much less demonstrable provenance. He's multiplied the fuck outta his potential competing bidders, if he's trying to get it back.

If he wanted it back, he would've said "what holster," and let the price of the revolver stay low, or at least not boost it hard by making the matching holster available. Then sneakily bid on the un-remarkable gun.

Not Pulverman I like how you say that the holster made this worth it and yet the gun sold for almost 3 times as much because it has some very good history

MrDerp24 Well, that's the point-- the holster (having been documented to belong with the particular gun) is direct, tangible proof of the gun's history and enhances its value.

I had heard of these revolvers as Louis L'amour mentioned them in his early book "To Tame a Land". I've never been able to find out anything about them before, thanks.

In addition to the "standards" of the day, Colts, Remingtons, Smiths, etc, Louis L'Amour used a lot of odd-ball guns in his stories. One could have a VERY interesting collection if you just tried to gather "L'Amour" guns, guns use din his stories.

About 20 years ago my son had a cap gun modeled on this revolver. I was able to find a picture of it, but I never knew the story until now.
