@utcnc7mm The song hit #1 on the BILLBOARD Hot 100 for the week ending 11/21/1981. It spent 10 consecutive weeks at #1, the only song to accomplish that feat in the 1980's. Olivia had so many great songs such as "I Honestly Love You", "If Not for You", "Let Me Be There", "If You Love Me (Let Me Know)", "Have You Never Been Mellow", "Xanadu", "Hopelessly Devoted To You" etc. She starred with John Travolta in the movie "Grease" in 1978 & they had some great songs together "You're the One That I Want" & "Summer Nights". Sadly we lost Olivia in 2022. She was only 73 & bravely fought cancer for nearly 3 decades.

Olivia Newton-John was the opposite of Sandy and was much more into romantic ballads that certainly matched good looks. it seemed that she had a tendency to be somewhat passive and was produced in certain ways that emphasized her innocent beauty that was a big seller from the 80s. Never forget that she was before the year 2000 and the Internet. Everything was radio oriented and certain stations played certain kinds of music and other stations played other kinds. MTV was going on strong and she photographed quite well. She was pure Pop music. Four Grammys was not too bad. Surprised you didn’t recognize that the headband was all about the exercise craze at the time not the hippie past.

This was one of her popular songs from the movie "Xanadu" [Zan-a-doo]. In the movie she sang this while rollerskating. The movie itself didn't do well but her music (along with Electric Light Orchestra) did well. The movie has since become a cult classic and even spawned a Broadway musical. Given that you're into fitness, if you want to explore more of ONJ's music you should check out "Physical" which was one of her best-selling (and controversial) hits.

Ok, talking about the 80's headband fashion trend, it's important to note that ONJ was not following a trend with that 80's look. She created it. It was a look that is very much associated with 80's fashion and it was because of her. As is her look in the video Physical, with the workout wardrobe, that lasts, in many respects, to this day. Like the look or not she was a heavy influence on 80's fashion and that's important to pop culture and fashion history.

Olivia Newton John.. Magic & The Electric Light Orchestra....For context. The movie stars Olivia as a Muse. One of the daughters of Zeus. She has been in the mind of a young man before she reveals herself to him. He is looking at a run down venue that he is working to turn into a roller disco which was a fad at the time. Gene Kelly is also in it. His last movie and he had to be talked into it. He plays an older Man that Olivia helped in the past and she puts them together as he will be the money man.

It was reworked for Broadway and was a hit there. Also the song Xanadu is great but I would point you to the movie clips. There is also a song that she did in the movie with the group ... The Tubes...were it starts with Big Band then Rock and goes back and forth then merges. .. Dancin (1980) - Olivia Newton John, The Tubes. When they filmed Xanadu, They went all out and got every available act it the area. Including circus acts. jugglers, high-wire, dancers on roller shakes

"Magic" is a great pick for Olivia. Probably my favorite of hers. The word "Xanadu" (Zanadoo) is a made up word (orig. Shangdu) but it comes from a famous poem called "Kubla Khan" by Samuel Taylor Coleridge, first published in 1816. It was around the dawn of modern fantasy / scifi / adventure type writings. "In Xanadu did Kubla Khan / A stately pleasure-dome decree ..." Not sure if you've covered it yet, but Olivia and John Denver had a duet, "Fly Away," that was popular.

Olivia is one of the best selling recording artists of all time with 100 million album sales. She also was the biggest selling female recording artist of the 1970's. And I agree with what Barry Gibb (of the Bee Gees) always said, ONJ was the best female vocalist of her era. And that is saying a lot from a man who wrote and produced an entire album for Barbra Streisand. ONJ just had it all vocally: control, range, agility, perfect pitch, and had just about every vocal technique available to her. Plus she could harmonize with anyone. That's why she could cross genres so easily and make it her own. So many different shades to her voice. All that talent! I miss her so much! May she be singing with the other angels now.

Lots of people these days think of ONJ only from the start of her Pop Music segment of her career, BUT--and it is a BIG but--her style changed over the course of her career. She began, believe it or not, as a Country Music star. Her break out hit was 'Let Me Be There' and that song was eclipsed by her follow up 'If You Love Me (Let Me Know)' which topped the Country Music charts and went to number 5 on Billboard, thus opening the door to her Pop Career. The follow up (from the same album) I Honestly Love You saw her reach number one on both country and pop charts. Interestingly, she NEVER lost her country audience even when she focused more on the pop page--Have You Never Been Mellow, Come On Over (written by the Bee Gees) and so many more.

Olivia set the stage for the 80's workout vibe with this look. This is her second biggest hit, with 4 weeks at number 1. Her biggest hit came in 1981 with the song Physical, 10 weeks at number 1. My favorite song of hers is Twist of Fate from 1983. She was the biggest thing from the early 70s through the mid 80s selling more than 100 million albums world wide. Grease was just one blip on her career map. :)

This was a favorite in my teen years. My favorite Olivia song. (Another to do would be her duet with Cliff Richard "Suddenly"). The bass line in this song is spectacular too

The movies Grease and Xanadu were only 2 years apart. ONJ was almost 30 when she filmed Grease. This song was part of the soundtrack for Xanadu. I think the shorter haircut ages her a bit. She still had longer hair in Xanadu, but cut it short for the Physical music videos.

Xanadu is great soundtrack with music by Electric Light Orchestra (ELO). The title track with Olivia and check out All Over The World by ELO.

Karen Carpenter and Linda Rhonstadt were considered the female vocalists of the 70's with Olivia right behind. Karen and Olivia were close friends.

I would put ONJ at the top of my list in both talent and popularity. ONJ was the biggest selling female recording artist of the entire decade of the 1970's.

ONJ's "Physical", along with Hall & Oates "I Can't Go for That" were the two songs in 1982 that held Foreigner's hit ballad "Waiting For A Girl Like You" at it's peak of #2. Between the two, they ultimately prevented Lou Gramm & Co. from having two #1 ballads as opposed to just their '84 chart topper "I Want To Know What Love Is" in the 'ballad' genre. '84 - '85 was also my senior year of high school; there were a few early '80s hits that were adapted to marching band play by the '84 football season. Playing the quadratoms that year, Physical was played at every game during the half time show along with J. Geils Band's "Centerfold" & Toto's "Africa" - basketball pep band season brought Survivor's "Eye Of The Tiger" & Donna Summer's "She Works Hard For The Money" & "Hot Stuff" to our playlist. Needless to say, we had a band director that liked to rock out, which suited us just fine - he had a ton of great music from which to choose!

Oh c'mon guys!!! I love her. She was an early crush for many young men. She is beautiful and that should not be shamed for us. Great reaction from a seventies point of view. Love it!!!

Australian producer, singer, guitarist, and songwriter John Farrar wrote this song, and almost all of Olivia's many hits, as well as producing her albums. He was a former member of many bands including The Shadows, which also featured singer Cliff Richard. Farrar also wrote "You're The One That I Want" and "Hopelessly Devoted To You" from the soundtrack to the movie Grease. 🙂

She came through in the 70’s as kind of a country pop sound. Her voice, while beloved at the time as one of the top female vocalists, was very light and breathy which played into your comments. Sam’s comment about her looking like a workout girl was spot on in her look as this song les into her next album Physical with a monster hit of the same name which was a huge workout song for that era and the video fed right into it, even though the lyrics were “sexual” in nature

Xanadu was a movie (another musical) that included songs from ELO (Electric Light Orchestra)...another great band you should look into. The song Xanadu was a duet from both Olivia & ELO

Pronounced Zann a doo. Xanadu came out on August 8th of 1980. I went to see the movie very close to my Birthday which is in August. As a birthday treat for myself. Sadly their were technical difficulties with the audio and the film print itself which broke about five minutes into the movie. So had to get a raincheck to come back and see it a few days later. 😢 The music for Xanadu had half the album written and performed by Jeff Lynne and the Electric Light Orchestra and John Farrar who did Olivia's half of the Album. The title track Xanadu had Olivia doing lead vocals and Jeff Lynne and Olivia doing backing vocals.

Superb voice and person. Other favs: Have you never been mellow; If you love me let me know; Hopelessly devoted to you, You're the one that I want (from the movie Grease), and many others. She had like 20 top 40 hits. Her range is at the very extreme upper limits Soprano down to high tenor. RIP ONJ.
