Juliane Koepcke the daughter of German zoologists Maria and Hans-Wilhelm Koepcke, she became famous at the age of 17 as the sole survivor of the 1971 LANSA Flight 508 plane crash; after falling 3,000 m (10,000 ft) while strapped to her seat and suffering numerous injuries, she survived 11 days alone in the Peruvian Amazon rainforest until she was rescued by local fishermen after finding their camp.

The maggots in her arm actually cleaned the wound. They might have saved her arm from nasty infections. Great Story Chris.

Yes, just what I was thinking. We had a farm animal with a leg injury, into which flies laid eggs that hatched into maggots. The vet said to just let the maggots continue, terrible as that sounds. He said maggots only consume the dead flesh and actually are cleaning the wound from possible infection. What a system!

I have read a an account of Juliane survival where it was said she had an infestation of boy fly larvae on the injury of her arm. Her autobiography released in 2011 "When I Fell from the Sky: How the Jungle Gave Me My Life Back"

I was thinking the same thing! They very likely saved her life and her arm! However if they were actually botfly larvae then they probably kept the wound clean of infection, but with the tradeoff of them doing more damage to the wound because of the large holes they leave. Definitely not something fun to think about! 😵

Yes , “You need a more structured environment. One in which your indoctrination will be far easier to instill. FAR better than an education in the Real World that a young girl like you has no need for if she’s going to be a good wife and mother in “civilization” “ . Other than math and some biology, maybe sports ,,, I haven’t squeezed much value out of the countless hours , cold,dark,early mornings in winter to make it to class on time ,,, that I received as a typical western public school student.

It’s impossible to complain about life’s inconvenience at times when you here a story like this where a brave young woman survived a plane crash and the will to survive,but to go on later to flourish after a one in a billion chance of survival.Some peoples ability to survive such horrors is beyond inspiring! Thanks for a well told story Chris,you give hope when all seems lost,or I should say she is living proof.

When I was in High School-mid 1970's,I read a book about her surviving the plane crash and making it out of the jungle, alive. Of course, this story has always stayed with me. She said staying calm and drifting down the river is what saved her from the crocodiles. A terrifying story with an unbelievable outcome. Thank You for sharing, Chris!

✨ If it wasn't for the canopy of the amazon trees, she probably would not have survived at all ! And her being already a custom to the amazon forest she felt right at home which also helped her to tough it out and make it through it all. That is an incredible true story. I have heard shorter accounts of this story. None of these accounts contained as many details as your telling of this event. Even though I was vaguely familiar with this story, I was absolutely riveted by your descriptions of what this young girl experienced. Thank you for this great video, Chris. Beyond amazing! I broke my collarbone many years ago, & a few yrs ago dislocated my knee. How Juliane survived those injuries all at once, & in the Amazon jungle of all places, boggles the mind. She is Truly Blessed!!🌹

I remember watching a documentary about this, years ago. She actually found a small bag of candy from the wreckage, thus she did have some calories to survive on. I'm sure she suffered, not only from the loss of her Mother, but from survivors guilt. I recall the utter joy and amazement of her Father, when he learned of her survival !! Thank you, Chris - it's quite a story. Doesn't even seem real; like a movie !!

Strange you should tell this story today, when only yesterday I was listening to another RU-vid storyteller about 4 young children who similarly survived a plane crash along the Amazon, probably Brazil. The young lady in your story had particular experience of the jungle which served her well, but the 4 youngsters of yesterday didn't. You often hear about youngsters being retrieved alive from underneath collapsed buildings days after earthquakes. Seems the young have a particular natural resilience to physical adversity.

Thanks Chris for that story....I remember hearing or reading about that ..I especially remember the part about the maggots....they only eat dead tissue,not healthy tissue...I think I read she also smeared mud on her body and face to keep bug bites from being so bad...thanks for this ,you are a good story teller...it was spellbinding to listen to...so many details I never heard ! After she was saved from such a fall, it's evident it was not her time to go... clearly she was protected from what followed. What a horrifying experience! I cannot imagine having to go through such an ordeal.
