"Dollhouse" is about the family of Melanie's alter ego. The alter ego's mother is revealed to be an alcoholic due to her husband's infidelity and the brother smoking cannabis. The alter ego, named Cry Baby, is the only one that recognizes how horrible her situation is. Cry Baby wishes people would understand her reality. In the music video, Cry Baby and her family are visualized as dolls as a metaphor for Cry Baby's family trying to seem perfect in public. This song also can be used to describe how people view celebrities. In an interview, Melanie said, "People put them in glass boxes and think they are perfect and when something happens that shows when they are humans, people don't like that."

Been her fan and following her before she put out her first album and let me tell u Melanie is as much a story teller as she is a singer. She is her own writer, producer, director, investor, costume designer ect. Everything on screen is all her vision Its exactly the story SHE wants to tell so there's a meaning behind every visual, every lyric, every transition from one song to the next, even her songs are ordered certain way to tell her story. No third party meddling what so ever😌 it's so refreshing from a Music Artist 😤

I've never listened to other Melanie songs but I remember when this one came out when I was in middle school. It's a song I circle back to and listen to periodically threw the year because it's so unique and it hit home for me at the time of release too. My parents had recently split up my dad was an alcoholic and abusive and these lyrics really portray that type of home life

The fun thing about Melanie's songs is that every single one of them tells some sort of story with a deep or deepish meaning. Just like billie's music, each song has its own unique vibe that fits so well with the lyrics. I almost think one they should listen to is Alphebet boy because of how smart she was with the lyrics to that song.

Her music is incredible. This isn't the only one, a lot of her music touches on really important and dark topics. The only thing is her albums tell a story if you go in order and watch all the music videos and read into it a bit. Crybaby, the K-12, and then Portals.

You guys are gonna love going down the rabbit hole that is Melanie Martinez. Her music does have a narrative. First arc is the Crybaby arc (the album Crybaby), then K-12, followed by the After School EP, and then Portals. I personally love K-12. It’s her best album. Also her aesthetic is very much the dark lyrics hidden under unassuming visuals & song titles.

Melanie Martinez is well worth exploring. I love how she juxtaposes a lot of real life difficult subject matter with childlike language and imagery. You boys will LOVE Tag You're It/Milk and Cookies. :)

omg i never comment on videos in general but i feel the need to. Melanie is such an amazing artist to react to, her albums actually tell a story! Dollhouse is actually the second song from her “Crybaby” album, which tells the story of crybaby. I’m pretty sure all her the songs have a music video as well! If you do dive into her music more i recommend listening to the albums in order (it goes crybaby, k-12, and her latest album portals.)
