"We walked in for what we expected to be the happiest day of our life. We walked straight into a nightmare."
Kira’s case isn’t unique. Pregnancy-related deaths are increasing in the United States more than in another other country in the developed world.
In 2015, the Global Burden of Disease Study revealed that for every 100,000 births there are 26 mothers who die in the U.S. In comparison, the death count is nine in the United Kingdom, seven in Canada, and four in Italy, Sweden and Denmark.
At least 700 women die in the U.S. every year from pregnancy-related causes, according to a report from the Nine Maternal Mortality Review Committee. These deaths occur during pregnancy, during childbirth or up to a year after delivery. More than half of all deaths have been deemed preventable by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

It wouldn’t surprise me if the reason they waited that long 7 hours they was hoping something would happen to her. To wait that long to provide medical attention to this young woman that needed their medical attention is beyond neglect it’s criminal. A number of Black people have told me how they have been neglected by doctors. Some had gone to the ER seeking medical care and was sent home by the ER because they said nothing was wrong and died or appendix ruptured and had to go back in for an emergency surgery.I have personally witnessed some of these unfortunate incidents. It is really sad.

Remember guys, if you are at a hospital, advocate for your loved ones!!! If you demand a test is done and it’s not done right away, you can call a code! Yes, ANYONE concerned, staff or not can call a code, it’s called a “Rapid Response”. Just step out into the hall and tell any staff member you would like to call it on the said patient and they must call it, no matter the reasoning. Once the code is called, an emergency team of nurses and doctors will immediately come to assess the patient, perform labs, tests, etc… Edit: you can also call the “rapid response”by picking up the hospital phone in the patient’s room and dialing “0” and telling it to the hospital operator. They will immediately call the code for you. Might be good to save this info to your notes in your phone so you remember what to do, and what the code is called. Some parts of the country call it a “MET call”. So it’s either a “Rapid Response” or a “MET Call”. Travel nurse here, btw. Edit#2: unfortunately someone in the comments has misinformation about this. I’ll simply tell you guys, it takes a very quick web search of “can anyone call a rapid response” to verify this info. Please do your own research so that this message isn’t lost 🙏🏾

As a midwife I can say all the signs were there for urgent intervention that were clearly denied. So sorry for your loss. As a Nurse, as midwife advocating for your patients is key.. It’s sadly a common thing. I had a hysterectomy, they sent me home after a few days and I told them I was in severe pain and blood was gushing out of me. The next day I was rushed back in , few days later , still bleeding, we found out I was bleeding internally. Spent another 27 days in hospital. They expected me to die. This hospital, the physicians and nsg staff ought to be criminally charged for intentionally neglected Kira’s care, and for violating the oaths they took to DO NO HARM! No amount of financial award can ever replace nor cover Kira’s life, a healthy mom’s life. It’s more egregious knowing the stats re the high incidence of deaths to Black mothers and / or their newborns. Studies have been performed on MD’s and their racist attitudes when seeing Black patients. They categorically denied such biases in treating white patients and Black patients. The results of the studies: majority of the respondents scored having racists attitudes towards Black patients when they experience pain levels and their care! Quite telling.

This broke my heart, I can't fathom what the family went through! Absolutely mind-blowing that the staff waited for over 7 hours to try to save her life... When my 3rd child was born, natural birth, I had my mom, (who was a retired labor and delivered nurse, back when she had me), by my side and she and the doctor noticed I was hemorrhaging right after delivery, before I knew what was going on, the doctor started to treat me, right there... I can't understand how they just ignored her condition until it was too late... My prayers and sympathy are with her family!!

OMGGG🤬 There was absolutely NO excuse for that! None whatsoever! I’ve been on both sides of the fence here as a medical professional, and as a mom who had complications post delivery. 7 hours? 7 HOURS?? That is NOT STAT!! Doesn’t take a genius or an “MD” for that matter to figure out what the problem was. She just had a C-section, clearly she’s bleeding internally. So first they say CT, then a simple “internal exam” to figure out she needs an OR because she’s going into hypovolemic shock!! She should of been hooked up to a monitor as well which would of clearly shown signs of her declining health! Alarms would of been going off, she would of been getting pale, cool to the touch skin, diaphoresis, and they did nothing, NOTHING!!! There is no excuse for that except for extremely poor caregiving by every nurse, doctor, CNA, anyone who had any part of her aftercare that day is to blame for this negligence. Abandonment of a patient is a real thing, as is negligence, poor communication, etc…I could go on all day about how awful and preventable this whole fiasco was! I hope you sue the SHIT out of that hospital! I am so sorry for your loss. My heart breaks for you and those beautiful boys. It isn’t fair, life isn’t fair, especially when the death of someone was 100% avoidable! 🥺 God bless your heart, and your boys. I pray for healing for everyone who lost such a beautiful soul, may she rest in peace. 😞🙏

@kimberlysterling3883
@kimberlysterling3883 Год назад
Well who is us and what are they supposed to look like? It would seem that you must be speaking about race in this unbelievably uneducated comment. You need to be extremely grateful for the medical care provided by all races. Most citizens of the United States would not receive healthcare if not for the many physicians from other countries practicing here. If our healthcare depended on physicians that graduated from medical schools in the United States there would be so many millions of people that had never been to a doctors appointment. So many deaths from illnesses that are easily treated with a prescription if there was a doctor to diagnose and treat. The color of ones skin does not determine one’s ability to provide healthcare to people of all races. The comment about your pain being as real as the next persons. I’m not certain what is meant by that or if you actually think that it’s believed that pain of one race is somehow different than pain of another race.
@sjladuke75
@sjladuke75 Год назад
@@kimberlysterling3883There's nothing uneducated about the previous comment made by Nurse Jackie. She is well aware of the current situation in medical care & the growing issues of racism within our nation's health care system. As a former Nursing Manager with decades of experience & a daughter who is currently a PGY4 MD. resident in ENT Head-Neck Surgery. There is a serious lack of Black/Latino physicians representing their communities which unfortunately translates to those Black/Latino patients not receiving the same medical care or attention given to others. These are fact based concerns, not opinions. It's also been proven that increasing the number of medical professionals who share the same racial/ethnic background improves health care access & medical outcomes for those within medically underserved communities. There's absolutely no reason for this country to have such disparities in health care based on race, particularly involving women's reproductive health. Despite spending the most money for health care, the USA ranks last overall compare with Australia, Canada, Germany, The Netherlands, New Zealand & the United Kingdom. That's not acceptable.

Kira dying was a needless tragedy & I'm very glad it's getting attention! Twice my life was put at risk when staff ignored serious symptoms at an ER. The only thing that helped me get care was that family member with me recognized how serious the symptoms were & kept advocating for me to get help. Having an advocate when you're sick is VITAL! US healthcare has become nothing but a coldhearted business with way too few qualified doctor's, nurses & technicians after so many were fired or quit. Many good doctor's are quitting out of disgust. Most my friends have horror stories about medical care, yet we're all white, so the whole system is corrupt & mismanaged. Idk why I didn't have a stroke waiting for care except for a miracle. I'd gone to the ER after a bad reaction to steroids for an infection. The ER triage had told me to wait but after an hour I was faint & struggling to stay conscious. Someone told a nurse I needed help & she came out & took my BP. It was ridiculously high like 160 or higher. Even the ppl next to me were alarmed, but the nurse only sd, "We will get u to the back when we can, just wait." My son arrived & started advocating for me to get help & they finally helped me. Another time I was left without an exam or treatment over 5 hours with an incarcerated hernia! After 6 hrs usually part of the intestine gets gangrene so it has to be removed! Kira's precious sons were robbed of a wonderful mother & I'm praying they get justice! We're all in this nightmare together so we must stand together to get the changes needed!

I’m sorry that your daughter endured that and although I have no experiences with Cedar Sinai; I have had a bad experience at a Virginia maternity ward. These places are doing what they’ve been taught that it’s okay, acceptable, and devoid of accountability; to not only be racist but crank it up to discriminatory towards melanated African-Americans. Discrimination occurs when racism is put into action, without action it’s simply in their minds. I also had to get out of Character at a NJ Hospital when my husband and I were in order for them to do my Cesearean Section following 16 hours of labor, etc.

I had started to hemorrhage during my first pregnancy. I went to the ER but was sent home "To Let Nature Take Its Course". I was admitted to the hospital three days later. A doctor (not my doctor or one affiliated with his group) entered my room and did a pelvic exam on me (I had not yet miscarried). He then took me into an exam room and basically did a D&C on me without benefit of anesthesia. He actually threw the fetus on the table right next to me. When he finished butchering me he told me to go shower. I woke up soaking wet being put into my hospital bed after passing out. I didn't sue him or the hospital because I would have had to sue my OBGYN too. My doctor was a wonderful doctor who had done nothing wrong. Long and short of it is this Maniac caused me to endure lifelong female problems that in turn caused me to become Barren. I had to have a complete hysterectomy at 28 years of age. I'm White . . . and they destroyed my life, hopes and dreams too. I hope your daughter is doing better. GOD BLESS HER.

So sorry for your loss 😢. As a mother of 4 son's 33, 31, 27😇 and 25, back in the 1990's I realized that I was a target by these doctors because they somehow ruled my pregnancies as high risks therefore I had 4 C-section births. Over the years I realized that these C-section birth's are really statistic ritual's perform on black women. With my last C-section birth I had to stay in the hospital 6 days because I had a high fever which really scared the nurses. After reading the book of 2 chronicles 16 chapter 12 I don't trust these modern day doctors and scientists because all of these doctors are not God fearing humans and this is why these modern day doctors all banned the midwives in America. The Most High God doesn't care for these doctors, he care more for the midwives because the doctors are getting away with murder the moment someone dies in there care. I noticed that while working in the nursing home during the pandemic and that is why the most high God told me to quit working there because of what these doctors were doing to the elderly black patients.

This happened to me after a c-section last year. After some hours of giving birth, i started ho bleed. I called the nurse and tell her. First she told me that it xas nothing but after a while , i insisted that she at least check what was happening. Then i saw her face changes and immediately call the doc. I was taken in emergency to the block. I remember everything even if i was not concious. I remember hearing the doc saying: "we're losing her". I remember saying the shahada ( i am a muslim) and praying to God to let me live to raise my daughter and then nothing. After i woke up they told me that i came back from death. The first month, i was unable to walk or do any movements due to the double operation i had. This was 10 months ago and i still feel the shock and the pain i had back then. Alhamdoulillah i am able to see my daughter and take care of her. I'm really sad for this woman. May God have mercy on her and her family as well.

This is a good example of why black Americans need their own hospitals, doctors and nurses because nobody love or care about us the way we care about others 😢 We need to save ourselves look out for one another and feel comfortable going to the hospital to get the proper treatment we deserve. I remember giving birth to my first child and the nurses were so rude to me and judged me but the only nurse that was nice to me and made me feel comfortable was a black nurse. She noticed the treatment and gave me sound advice and tips on being a first time mom🥰I later found out that she was the mother of my new hairdresser and when I saw her I gave her the BIGGEST hug. That's what I had with 3 of my 5 vaginal deliveries. My last baby however, was the complete opposite. I had placenta previa with her. It was bad. Very scary. I was hospitalized for 4 months until i gave birth at the 28week mark. Thankfully all went well. But they were prepared for anything and everything. The operating room was full of nurses and 2 anesthesiologists, My main obgyn Dr and a specialist along with the NICU staff. The morning of my surgery, I had a major bleed... It's like someone turned on the water faucet only it was blood.. pouring out of me. I hang just hung up the phone with my mom who said a prayer for me. I went to lay back in the bed and felt the hot blood coming out.. fast too. The nurses drilled in my head that if anytime ever happened while I'm alone or whatever to pull on this one cord on the wall.. It actually disconnects, i did so quickly, that i knocked the tray table over that had the phone on it. Happened at 6:45am. My c section was supposed to have taken place at 10am. I was going to be awake and my friend with me. It didn't work like that. Once I pulled that cord lights were flashing and a alarm was going off and next thing i knew every nurse and dr was in my room. They cut my PJ pants off me, and it just all happened so fast. I'll never forget a nurse who held my hand and prayed with me as the Dr was checking down there and she held it all the way to the OR...I was screaming cuz 1 of my biggest fears is to be put to sleep.. For fear I might not wake up. But i did. First the I asked was about my baby, she was fine. Healthy 4lbs on the dot. Pink, beautiful, my next question was, so I'm alive? lol. Then I feel back asleep but was woken up when they pushed on my stomach in recovery.. My friend was there.. But i was so drugged but i felt that pain that I screamed out. My baby is not a baby no more. She's a beautiful, healthy 20yr old. With a 4 going to be a 5yr old son come July. It's so sad this story.. Breaks my heart. Me oldest just found out she's pregnant with her 3rd baby. She's 8 weeks. She's been spotting, and it scared her.. Son she went in for labs to have her HCG levels tested, they were all in range still. Then they did a ultrasound discovering she has a subchorionic hemorrhage. Which the Dr said that she's got to have pelvic rest at least until her 12 week. So I'm praying that everything works out in her favor if the Lord is willing. I'm glad you are still with us. With my 3rd it was so bad, that I had to have a surgery that they said typically takes 2 hours or so but it took almost 6. I'm thinking we both had the same.. Where you lay on a table, flat and you can't move, you got to be very still with one leg bent and the other straight. Then the surgeon goes in the bikini line area, makes an incision and with the help of microscope and a tv to guide him to see what he's doing, trying to cauterize all the veins and vessels in my uterus that was causing me to bleed out. I had to receive 2 pints of blood that day. I woke up to the voice of my dad.. They had called him cuz he was my emergency contact. He lived 3hrs away.. it was bad. But I survived. Thanks to God and them Drs. Wish she would've survived too. With all the technology we have today.. She would've survived had they only done their dam job. Even i know blood in her catheter bag is a sign of her bleeding out. The shaking, that cold feeling.. It only takes 20 minutes to bleed out fully. So so sad and heartbreaking. Does anyone know if the husband sued for malpractice? I seriously hope so.

Blood in the catheter sounds like the doctor knicked the ureter or bladder possibly, she should've been treated immediately. So sorry for your loss!

I'm white and after the birth of my second son was sent home hemorrhaging. I was taken by ambulance to the hospital the next day with a 104 degree temperature. My stitches and uterus was infected because of some remaining afterbirth which also caused my hemorrhaging. I received multiple blood transfusion and was in the hospital for almost a week. My doctor had induced my labor so he could go out of town for Thanksgiving. In my case and this young woman's case, it was medical negligence. There's no excuse for this young lady's death and my heart and prayers go out to her family.

I remember their story. Still just as painful to hear and see again. This beautiful soul was robbed of her life, and so was her family. I also remember how Serena Williams almost lost her life after birthing her baby girl too. If she and her husband didn't push and fight for her aftercare when she first noticed an issue, she wouldn't be here today. It angers me how dismissive these medical providers can be. Sometimes, I feel they do it intentionally to BW.
