The songs on this album "True Stories" are the Talking Heads version of the songs sung by the actors in the "True Stories" movie. That movie was written and directed by David Byrne (the lead singer) and starred John Goodman (the dad from Rosanne), Swoozie Kurtz, etc. It includes the song "Radiohead" which is where the band Radiohead got their name. My favorite song on that album is "City of Dreams". Thanks for reacting to one of my favorite bands!

Yes, the dad from Roseanne, John Goodman, was the guy you recognized. And in case you didn't get some of the folks they were imitating, they had people dressed as Billy Idol, a generic hair band rocker, Kid Creole, a Meatloaf lookalike, Ralph Macchio's character in the Karate Kid, and a Prince lookalike, among others.

Of all the Heads songs you've done, this one is chronologically the last. From the 70s through the 90s and beyond, they never lost their "unique" edge, though the 80s was when they seemed to be the most mainstream. This song was one example. I would love to hear you react to some other Heads songs from that time period, like "And She Was", "Road to Nowhere", "Stay Up Late", or my personal fave, "(Nothing But) Flowers". David Byrne is still the coolest cat you'd ever want to meet. And to answer your question, the dad in Roseanne was John Goodman, and yes, that was him.

David Byrne, the most talkative of the Talking Heads, wrote "Wild Wild Life" for the 1986 movie True Stories, which he starred in and directed. He recorded the songs for the film with the band, and that became their seventh album, True Stories. Many of these songs were used in the movie with the actors replacing Byrne's vocals, but the "Wild Wild Life" film version is identical to the one on the album.
@0okamino

That happens to all of us when we first hear a song and we may not be in the right mood for it or have the wrong expectation. We remember "Oh, I didn't like that song". Then later we come back to it in a different mindset and think "This is growing on me" or "Why didn't I like this before?". With that said - Please do more B-52's. They are campy, quirky, light-hearted, funny, & talented. They take their craft seriously but their craft is about just having fun and not being too serious. A very underrated band is five for fightings, Superman (its not easy) and 100 years. Really would love to watch your reation to these songs. Thank you for what your doing.

Taken from the film True Stories (with some additional content) the video includes band member Jerry Harrison parodying Billy Idol, Kid Creole, Ralph Macchio's character Karate Kid, and Prince. And yes, that was John Goodman - the dad from 'Rosanne'.

First line: "I'm wearin' fur pyjamas" -- I wish I could be snuggled into fur jammies tonight! We would watch the video and try to guess who they were pretending to be. Billy Idol? Poison? Prince? Nancy Reagan?

This is actually a part of David Byrne's film "True Stories". It takes place in Virgil, Texas (Call it Dallas, because that's where it was filmed), and yes, the movie contains John Goodman, Swoosie Kutz, Spaulding Gray, Pops Staples and a bunch of other folks. It is surreal, funny, full of Southern humor. It was released to coincide with the 150th anniversary of Texas becoming a state, and I have always seen it as a love letter of sorts. I was one of the extras at the North Park Mall where they had the fashion show.

I love them precisely because they mix weird and catchy so well.

This video (and the movie True Stories) were filmed in 1986; two years before John Goodman was cast as Dan Conner in "Roseanne."

Hey Jay and Amber, so great to see your reaction to Talking Heads, they truely are another great band of the times. Your comments are so right about never being disappointed with their querkiness, but the music rocks. "This must be the Place" (Naive Melody) is another great listen. Hope to see your reaction to that one soon.
