It is truly a conundrum when we try to rationalize how it is possible that this tiny sweet-faced 9yo Norwegian girl can step up to a microphone, flip some switch within her, become this "beast-mode" version of herself (most probably named "AJ don't play"), deliver an extraordinary and musically and socially sophisticated performance, then just-like-that return to the pensive young lady once again... There aren't words for this! Angelina is the only musician in her family. She won Norway's Got Talent at 8yo (not 11). Her grandmother is a painter and sculptor I believe. "I Put a Spell On You" has been covered many times and is recognized as a classic, yet almost never is the tone of the original 1956 "Screamin" Jay Hawkins version captured. This is because Hawkins was the original shock rock guy (think Ozzy Osbourne type craziness) and his style is difficult to emulate and also because his dated delivery is uncomfortable and stereotypical to our modern sensibilities. Yet Angelina respectfully sings his own song in a manner that exceeds his (Hawkin's image is on the candle she holds at the start of her video). You must go and listen to Hawkins' original (and throw in a couple of "famous" covers as well) to see the true genius in how AJ incorporates many of his vocal elements [usually omitted by most singers]. This shows another aspect of her musical IQ and arranging genius (not to mention her masterful control of her vocal instrument equaled by few others regardless of age). "A little Amy Winehouse" , that is a complement for Angelina but that is just one of her many many voices she possesses. This song is arranged by Angelina in the spirit of the original 1956 by Screamin Jay Hawkins and I don't believe Amy could do what this little 9 year old is doing right here. So so many technical skills and inflections and pure genius she possesses in this arrangement far surpass most singers much much older than Angelina. This is a pure masterpiece, epic performance that, as one music teacher/coach put, will be studied in music classrooms for decades to come regarding "child" singers. Yes Angelina was 9 at the time of this performance although the video was not released until after had turned 10 . This was HER ARRANGENT of the 1956 original by Screaming Jay Hawkins whose face was on the candle at the beginning of the video . Angelina 1st auditioned for Norway's Got Talent at 7 years old and when the contest was over and she won she was 8 years old ! Angelina won with 46% of the total vote . I'm so excited for you on your Angelina Jordan journey. There's no road map for following her, and with over 160 videos, every destination will be a pleasant surprise. She is the best singer I've heard in my 70 years, not because of her range or vocal prowess, but because of the emotions she draws out of me. There is actually a short video of Angelina singing "I Will Always Love You" (Dolly Parton / Whitney Houston) in her crib at 18 months old, in answer to your comment on that. She began a serious study of jazz, with the help of maternal Grandma (the one you saw in this video) Meri Zamani, at the age of three. Child prodigy for sure! Ms. Zamani was also a child prodigy in her native land of Iran when she was a child, and is a famous poet/artist in that part of the world. You will sometimes see some of her abstract paintings in Angelina's home recorded videos of song covers.

Amazing reaction to a song Rolling Stone said was in it's top 500 best ever song performance! She does Amy Winehouse songs, some she had to rewrite lyrics to make them age appropriate. They were in grandma Mery's homeland of Iran. Angelina is Japanese, Iranian, Swedish and whatever her Paternal grandparents are. One is for her to remember that little girl who was the same age as Angelina. Don't really care about any others, for Angelina captured my heart in 2014 and has never let go. Angelina was 9 years and 2 months old when she performed this song. It is her tribute to Screamin' Jay Hawkins, who wrote and performed the song in 1956. She based her arrangement on his original performance, although she discarded all the theatrics and allowed her voice and body language to tell the story. The song has been covered by many singers over the years, but to my knowledge, Angelina is the only one who has sung in the same style as the original. Things I found particularly worthy of note in this video are (a) Angelina finishing writing last minute changes she wanted and handing them to the Music Director, who smiled. It is probably not a lisp you are hearing, English is her fourth language. She is Norwegian and her grandmother is Persian (Iranian), a recognised artist and the jazz lover, and her grandfather is Japanese. Plus her father is Swedish, but I haven't seen any evidence she is fluent in that language. AFAIK the musicians are from the Norwegian National Radio Orchestra (KORK) she has done several sessions with them including a cover of Amy Whitehouses 'Back to Black'

Hi HalRae! Nice to meet you, and here's hoping we see you more often! JMax, people may have already pointed this out, but two things: one, she was 7 years old when she auditioned for Norway's Got Talent, and 8 when she won. She was when she auditioned for America's Got Talent The Champions Season 2 - which aired in 2020, but the auditions for which were in 2019. She's 16 now. There will be a ton of recommendations that you'll have to go through. I don't know how you'll pick yours, but however you do, I'll be around. And yes, I definitely think you should have HalRae for your reactions to Angelina. Given how musically talented your family seems to be, have them too!

Born to Black (with altered lyrics by her) and Valerie are just two AJ covers of Amy's. She won NGT ay age 7 and was on AGT at 13 but rejected Simons contract offer. Its easy to know whats going on with the music because AJ arranges all of her covers. Infact those men (not family) call her the Boss.

Loved your reaction! Your wife is very observant, Angelina did know exactly what was going on with everyone else in the studio. Even at this age she was a consummate professional.The story I read was that her parents rented the studio and hired the musicians. When she arrived, she shook their hands and introduced herself, and was very polite, but they did not recognize her at first. Within 30 seconds of hearing her sing, they realized who she was. (she had won NGT the year prior). They affectionately called her "the boss" This is also her own arrangement of the song based on the original by Scream'in Jay Hawkins. In my opinion, her version is how this song was meant to be sung. Hope to see you and your wife do many more Angelina reactions, you will not be disappointed with any of them.

Another spell was cast by 9yo Angelina. Let’s analyze the video: 1st you see how small and cute she is. 2nd you see she is barefoot (story below) 3rd You see her making her “Wish List” of suggested changes to the song. 4th the band leader taking note of the changes. 5th Angelina is holding a candle with “Screemin’ Jay Hawkin’s (original artist 1956) picture on it. 6th the old soul in her voice. She is the youngest published author in Norway. Angelina wrote and her Grandmother illustrated a book about why she sings barefoot. She was on a trip to Iran where her grandmother is from and met a street girl weighing people for money. Angelina sat and talked with the girl. Angelina asked the girl what she wanted to be when she grew up and the girl replied, a doctor but that it could never happen. Angelina told her to never give up hope. The girl complimented Angelina on her shoes and Angelina noticed her scarred bare feet so she gave them to her, and the little girl told Angelina she would pray for her every day. Angelina sings barefoot to this day to remind herself (and the world) that there are still children in need. All book proceeds go to charity.

Angelina has been doing her own arrangements, since she was 7 years old. The page the gentleman is holding at the beginning, is actually her handwritten notes laying out what she expects from everyone. In studio, they playfully call her the "Little Boss". That's not her family, but that is her grandmother. On the candle she holds up, is Screamin' Jay Hawkins. He wrote this, and performed it originally. Nina Simone later covered it. 😆💕 Angelina has sung barefoot, except for rehearsals, since age 6 in remembrance of an orphan girl near her age that she met on the street in the middle east. The girl was using bathroom scales and weighing people for money. It was cold, she was barefoot, and her feet were scarred. They chatted about their dreams, and she asked Angelina what her dream was. Of course, Angelina said she wanted to be a singer, and sing for the whole world, and asked the girl about her dream. The girl said she wanted to be a doctor, but that was not possible because she had siblings to care for, and she wished Angelina luck in becoming a singing star, and she told Angelina she would pray for her every day. Angelina, on the spot, gave her the sea green boots, her favorites, that she was wearing and told her to never give up on her dreams, called her a “princess” and that she would always remember her. Angelina wrote in her diary that day, “…to be able to do something for another human, it was such a big thing. Hard to describe really.” Angelina, at 9, became Norway's youngest author when she wrote a book about it, "Mellom to hjerter" ("Between Two Hearts"). Angelina promised herself never to wear shoes when performing again until there were no more children around the world without shoes, clothing, or family. In her book Angelina says, “In respect for you and all children like you, and that you prayed to God, today I walk barefoot on cold floors in front of so many people and sing. This book is for you little princess. You’re like sunshine! I remember and remember you every day.” Angelina has raised many millions of Euros and Dollars around the world performing at charity concerts since age 8. So, to this day, almost 9 years later, Angelina has always performed barefoot in public. NGT Judge Mia Gundersen called Angelia’s voice, “a gift from the universe.” To me, the true gift to us all is Angelina herself. There are two outstanding things in this amazing creature, her enormous talent with an amazing vocal quality, and her family, who has made it an essential condition that she finish her studies before letting her fall into the maelstrom of fame, a decision as intelligent as it is complicated, because as you can see, she could already be filling stadiums (she already has). Angelina was 9 years old in this performance - Her nationality is Norwegian but is fluent in English even at this age - This song was not arranged for her - she wrote the arrangement based on listening to the original Screamin' Jay Hawkins version - in fact, at the beginning of the video you see Angelina writing down some last-minute changes and it is read by the bandleader. You also notice that her own handwritten notes are on the music stand in front of her as she sings. I just discovered this wonderful singer yesterday in a video from when she was 7 or 8 years old and said the same thing. I actually commented that she is Amy Winehouse reincarnated.

The musicians here she has performed with on several occasions back in Norway the notes you seen her hand to the music director as things that she wanted changed on the arrangement oh and by the way the the members of the band call her the Boss !!!
