If the grandmother wanted to die, by starving to death, she wouldn't eat regardless of having food given to her, so if she really wanted to die, particularly by starving to death, the granddaughter wouldn't need to leave instructions to the caretaker to not give the grandmother food
@guyrose2350
@guyrose2350 2 года назад
Literally! Old people when they’re near the end often stop eating themselves as well when they’re ready, my grandmother did that, she’d have a couple bites and feed the rest to the dog in secret. Everyone knew it was her time and that was her choice, but food kept being served to her in case she decided she wanted it.

I don't believe the granddaughter at all. Even if Mildred had thought about committing suicide, ultimately she didn't. Nor does the granddaughter knowing her grandmother had suicidal thoughts change the fact that the granddaughter was the one restricting Mildred's food and thereby causing her death. It could be framed as a mercy killing but not assisted suicide, especially since the granddaughter implies that Mildred wasn't always certain that she wanted to die.

The part I'm not sure about is the strict denying of extra food the carer tried to give. It should have been the grandmother's choice, each time, if she refused extra food. She could have said 'no' each time.
@Finians_Mancave
@Finians_Mancave 4 года назад
There's one fact that isn't followed up on clearly. The carer stated that the grandmother "was so hungry".... If the grandmother had been refusing to eat, that would have suggested her complicity in her own demise; instead, it sounds like she was cleaning her plate and asking for more, which suggests something completely different. The granddaughter's last statement (before she was cut off) implies Grandma's wishes weren't consistent. Bottom line, the granddaughter used their religion to "fill in the blanks" and should be held responsible... She should take the two years.
@fluidapple9091

None of what the granddaughter says makes sense. If her grandmother really wanted to die, she wouldn't of eaten the extra food the caretaker was giving her. That said, this was really murder, not assisted suicide. The poor woman was starved to death on purpose. As someone who has been suicidal most of my life, that is a selfish goddamn response. If anyone ever said that to me it'd make things worse. I also worked in a nursing home and saw the pain people suffered through, some of whom you get to a point you wish for death to take them every night because of how much they're suffering. People who can't walk, think, eat; people who do nothing but lay in bed all day and scream in pain and shit themselves. That life is awful; it's not living anymore just a soul trapped in a broken meat suit. Responding like that to someone who has lived a full life and is suffering is selfish and cruel. Her body, her life, her choice is valid. Just because it sucks for you that doesn't make it ok. If the grandmother wanted to die, you'd think she'd want to go peacefully in her sleep. That's often how most elderly people who are tired of living go out, either with Dr assistance (if terminally ill), with help from friends/family, or by themselves. Not starving to death. Which is one of the most slow and painful ways to go. Depression in elderly people is not uncommon, but most cases don't involve them committing suicide on their own. It's either assisted suicide (which would still be a whole legal thing) or assistance from medical personnel. If she really did want to die and wanted the granddaughters help, you'd think she'd leave a signed note or something. Assisted suicide is complicated.

People who want their lives to be over after a certain point -- when their health is deteriorating, their minds are going or they're in uncontrollable pain with no hope of recovery -- need to have their preferences and wishes recorded and signed in advance. I have a Do Not Resuscitate form signed by my doctor and instructions for withholding food and invasive medical care in my medical files, and carry a copy of that form with me. If you're lucky enough to survive two years and make it out, will you ever overcome what prison did to you physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually? As for the plot, I think it's ridiculous that she hid the "suicide" to save her grandmother's rep, and instead go on trial for murder. But to me what may have been the bigger crime is trying to deport someone so they wouldn't testify.

For everyone saying that if the grandma wanted to die she wouldn’t have chosen starvation, I think that the conversation she had with the priest gives an explanation to that. I am not saying this is cut and dry. There is a lot of gray here. Even if she didn’t starve herself or not, it was revealed that she was anyway in a lot of pain constantly. I don’t think we can begin to understand such a situation without actually experiencing it.

When my mother was getting older, and had lots of little strokes, she began to lose parts of her memory. Medical personnel began suggesting that I lie to her. I told them I never,lied to my mother and wasn't about to start, even if it would make things easier for me. When she thought her pets were still alive and waiting for her at home I didn't tell her the truth. Thus later, when she remembered that they had passed on, I didn't feel like a monster for lying to her, and she was not confused by my lies.

The g-daughter did it. She started to stray into a questionable area when she said “she was very clear about what she wanted and then sometimes…”. That’s when her lawyer put her hand over her client’s hands and said, “We’ve taken the deal.” as Stone is inquiring, “And then sometimes?” The g-daughter’s lawyer knew her client had starved her grandmother and kept her from doctor appointments to conceal her g-mother’s condition.

I’ve worked with people who are near the end of their life. The whole ‘she could’ve used the phone’ is BS. She likely would’ve been so delusional she wouldn’t have known it was there. Also, the little details like moving the food around to look like it was more suggests intention to kill. I think she was lying and deliberately killed her, likely cause she was getting so caught up in her lies and she didn’t want to be caught.

Actually most if the time for Catholics suicide is considered an action of mental illness or a part of an altered state in which one is not responsible for one's own actions. However the careful planning and execution of one's own death like we would see in this case would be considered a thought out killing. This would be against the commanment of killing or the more direct translation of not committing murder even if one is murdering themselves.

It wasn't made clear in this clip, but the daughter left notes for the caretaker to severely restrict her grandmother's intake of food and water. Here she is saying she tried to get her grandmother to eat more. I call B.S. She got off easy.

Is it bad I don't believe what the granddaughter is saying? The tone she has shows she's trying to lie her way and knew she did the crime of starving her grandmother. The caretaker was worried and made sure that old woman was fed. I think the granddaughter starved her grandmother so she can take the apartment or any fortune Mildred owned. Greed can make people do unthinkable things that soon come to regret.

I support medical institutions and assisted suicide. In certain lifelong and terminal circumstances, people having the right to die in their own terms is most humane and dignified way to depart. I realise this isn't really an option for those who are deeply religious but everyone should still have that option if they so choose.
