Sailing full time can be very challenging! There is so much out of our control, so much that can go wrong. Marie is feeling pretty upset during a very rough crossing from Sumbawa to Sulawesi, wondering why we are even doing this. Our 5 month old son Eli is on her mind and the potential danger we are putting him in. Very valid thoughts for a parent to have.
Sailing full time can also be very rewarding! Being in amazing unique places and witnessing the amazing nature. The culture differences with the people we meet and our own learning along the way. Overcoming challenges and feeling stronger because of it.
Its such a fine balance.

Vernon , I am a parent of three wonderful children years 24,23 and 20. Traveling thr south island island 20 years ago for 19 months in a tent i was called crazy. That journey was the making of my family. Keep going, doubt is wonderful. It creates an awareness and awakening to life. Its called learning by doing. Don't forget, any time you are back home,I have got a cabin for the family on GBI

Haha, in the moment we weren’t so calm believe me! I was ready to throttle that captain. We are enjoying Sulawesi so far apart from the lack of living things underwater. Bombing is still done widely here.

Good video, appreciate the candor. Here’s a thought, intended primarily for Marie. Perception of risk has much to do with one’s level of experience. You mentioned selling the boat and buying a camper van. I would suggest that doing this would probably expose the three of you to more risk. It wouldn’t feel like it, because you’re accustomed to strapping yourself into a thin shell of a vehicle and traveling at 60 MPH, whereas you’re still relatively new to sailing. I’m not arguing either for or against continuing this lifestyle, Marie, but just respectfully suggesting that trading what you’re doing now for traveling by campervan would almost certainly be a step backwards in terms of safety, even though it would feel more comfortable (familiar). You’ve had a string of bad luck, and the timing has been terrible given your new crewmember. I hope it’s over for a while. It’s been frightening, and frustrating, and demoralizing, and uncomfortable, but your lives have not really been at risk. Your life is almost always very much at risk on the road. Deep breaths, and the best of luck sifting through these experiences and the choices you have. There is risk everywhere.

It is really true ! The only thing is if something would happen to Vernon, it seems than on a road I could take the wheel feeling more confident than if I would have to take the helm in Trade Runner. I don’t have much experience on sailing/ motoring this cat yet, due to the time I am spending with Eli, and the idea of having to juggle between going safely somewhere in rough sea and taking care of Eli is freaking me out sometimes, just because you can’t really stop and have a break during a passage… but you are right about the fact than we are safer on the ocean and we have more experience dealing with things on a boat. Anyway I am reacting fast to stuff in life as the French I am, I love to complain and being dramatic to express my emotions but it is fading fast haha ! After few nice days on the boat, I will say than we have the best life possible 😂 it is all good

Very true and what I personally also believe. People happily sit in thier cars every day driving at 100kmph with someone else coming at them at the same speed. Both happily trusting the mechanic who tightened up the wheel nuts to have done his job properly or the other driver doesn’t have a heart attack. I think a lot of fear from sailing is that you have to face it alone almost and far away from help. Marie is doing amazingly well and has big reserves of strength that even she doesn’t know. Thanks for the great message.

As new parents of an infant, it's certainly understandable that your recent misadventures and challenges have you reevaluating all of your goals and plans. Nobody that follows you wants to see you end this adventure but neither do they want to see either you or Marie frozen in fear for placing little Eli in harms way. Perhaps you could make some temporary adjustments to your travels that would bring the boat closer to Vernon's home waters, like New Zealand or Australia. Later on, when Eli is older and more independent, you could return to the more challenging routes.

Thanks Vernon, Marie and Little man Eli for your update. "WOW"! another incident with another boat. I think the first was on the Eastern side of Aussie. Hopefully you'll have an easy time fixing it as really only looks like a sand down maybe layer of fiberglass and paint. I am surprised when the ferry docked or whatever it didn't send someone over to make sure you were okay and take responsibility. Most importantly you three are fine. Maybe a little stressed out, but we are talking Indonesia her. And their shipping and airlines don't really have a good safety record. I love the country great loving people at most part and a beautiful country. A fantastic holiday destination/travel and retirement. Still lots to be improved upon in the country's infrastructures. Take care you 3 and looking forward to next video.

Thanks mate. Yeah no big deal fixing that, it was really the minimum that could have happened. The captain would have lost face to his crew if he’d have admitted responsibility. It will always be the “touris” fault. Here in Indonesia the basic rules for traffic are that you get out of the way of anything bigger than you.

The fact that the ferry had no nav lights speaks volumes. Absolutely crazy. Glad you're ok and no major damage. Thankfully the islanders seemed amazing, so hopefully that made up for the bad experience with the ferry. Keep up the amazing work guys :)

Man you’ve no idea, the shipping is sooo sketchy here. Heaps of mining around Sulawesi and they use tugs and barges to transport the dirt. The tugs will have lights but a mile behind the 100ft barge will have nothing.

Thanks Dave. We anchored in a place just like that last week. We will pass through raja Ampat next year as we go east but won’t stay long I think. We had it best during Covid with zero tourism and to see it again now would be a disappointment I feel.

This zone seems to be pretty renowned for this type of weather. Fishermen often go missing for days on end, blown away only to turn up 200km away on another island.

Hang in there. Great journeys make good lives. How about hooking up with sv Delos or sailing nanji etc. share the kids aboard thing just to give peace of mind from the experience of others? I sail, but not that far, and the wellbeing and safety for all on board is the skippers challenge and constant worry. These are important considerations and best openly explored. Safe journeys. J

Unfortunately your boat is vulnerable at anchor with not a lot of manouvering options to avoid collisions. Our sad experience last week, a heavy trawler cut across our bow and its net snagged the anchor with 30mtr of chain. So very close. We got really intimate with the trawler & net, eventually cutting the chain & losing it & anchor, but saving the boat. So would you have done anything different in your situation Vernon? To avoid that collision. Cool island BTW ❤

Yeah as you say. If I’d have known in advance what was going to happen I’d have lifted the anchor long before he arrived! But that’s obviously impossible. I was just in disbelief until the he last minute as I never believed he would actually do what he did.

Same with our experience. We try to be proactive and recognise a dangerous situation, and that has saved us heartache more than once. In these situations you really don't have much time to react.If you can't go forward & raise anchor, you're sorta limited to emergency chain dump, hopefully with a float attached to retrieve later. Or cut chain & save your boat? Learning by doing! Hopefully we come through these things unscathed & smarter for the next time

Yep that’s the way it is and we know it after all these years sailing here. Both time we weee nearly taken out by ferries we were at anchor. In that position there’s not much you can do as if you go backwards you stretch your chain out and he’ll catch that , no time to pull the anchor in and if you go forward you might get tangled in you own anchor. At sea we give all ships lots of room.

Great video. Even with the hair raising bits. Clearly Marie was frightened by the waves crashing over the fore-deck. If the boat was in danger Vernon would have eased off, so it follows that Marie and bubs sleeping in the saloon while underway would remove that scary bit. As to the ferry captain, Report him and send the company an account...You most likely will not get paid, however no lights or AIS could be a captains ticket issue. That was bad for all three of you. Nothing you guys could have changed except not being there, but ,anywhere idiots put our lives at risk... It will only get better... Like you said little Eli just needs mum and dad, and a boob, and he's as happy as...

i bang on sometimes about Australia and her nanny state carry on over health and safety issues, but there is definitely times when it is much needed, like maritime things. The trouble with some places is they are very lax (and using that word is being polite) on safety issues and this is why some places are dangerous and their attitude of life is cheap.

No we don't. We enjoy our serenity if there's no connection. There is actually 4g almost everywhere in Indonesia now so we dont find it necessary at all.

I don’t know about Indonesia, but I know in Vietnam a lot of the ‘commercial’ vessel operators don’t have formal qualifications. There sea hours and who they learnt by qualifies them. 🥴
