Mount Jerome Cemetery & Crematorium (Irish: Reilig Chnocán Iaróm) is situated in Harold's Cross on the south side of Dublin, Ireland. Since its foundation in 1836, it has witnessed over 300,000 burials. Originally an exclusively Protestant cemetery, Roman Catholics have also been buried there since the 1920s.
The name of the cemetery comes from an estate established there by the Reverend Stephen Jerome, who in 1639 was vicar of St. Kevin's Parish. At that time, Harold's Cross was part of St. Kevin's Parish. In the latter half of the 17th century, the land passed into the ownership of the Earl of Meath, who in turn leased plots to prominent Dublin families. A house, Mount Jerome House, was constructed in one of these plots, and leased to John Keogh. In 1834, after an aborted attempt to set up a cemetery in the Phoenix Park, the General Cemetery Company of Dublin bought the Mount Jerome property, "for establishing a general cemetery in the neighbourhood of the city of Dublin".
The first official burial happened on the 19th of September 1836. The buried deceased were the infant twins of Matthew Pollock.
The cemetery initially started with a landmass of 26 acres and grew to a size of 48 acres in 1874.
In 1984, burial numbers were falling, thus the Cemetery was losing revenue and began to deteriorate. A crematorium was needed to regain revenue and deal with plant overgrowth on the estate.
The Funerary Chapel in the cemetery was the first Puginian Gothic church in Dublin. It was designed by William Atkins.
In 2000, Mount Jerome Cemetery established its own crematorium on the site.

Think the grave Martha Magee maybe said by her executors. She left a fortune that was looked after by two ministers. Part of it was used to build a college here in Northern Ireland which was named after her. Great video

24:14 You're correct of course, it says "Executors" not "Executioners". What a severe, austere necropolis. I wonder if there were height restrictions on the monuments in that region, or maybe it was just local taste. The few obelisks I saw weren't that tall. What the tombs lack in height, they make up for in their mammoth size. It's almost like looking at Ancient Egyptian sarcophagi, or some of the blocks used to make the Great Pyramid.

Okay, then I want to leave a comment here as well. Your walk was very interesting, many beautiful tombs and tombstones, but what intrigued me, was, that a person, who committed a crime and was executed, got such a big memorial to be remembered of. Well, times are changing, and about hundred years before this execution took place, people who broke the law were buried in non-sacred ground. I wish all of you a Merry Christmas and hope to see you here again soon. It was great fun to meet other fans of Dead Good Walks. 🎄

If your talking about the Martha Magee one it say Executors not executioners! Martha Magee (c. 1755-1846) was a philanthropist and a co-founder and the namesake of Magee College in Northern Ireland
@sleepynightowl1550
@sleepynightowl1550 Год назад
Martha Maria Magee wasn't executed. He actually read the description on the memorial wrong, sadly. It says executor not executioner. An executor is a person named in a will to oversee the process of wrapping up the decedent’s estate and distributing the remaining assets according to the will of the deceased person. Martha was a well respected woman, widow of Rev. William Magee. Her husband died in 1800, leaving her to raise her two boys by herself while depending on the widow fund only. Both boys entered into the military and died as young men. Martha inherited a fortune from both her brothers, who were in the military overseas in India. She made a lot of charitable donations after she inherited the money. A year before her death, Martha bequeathed £20,000 in her will to the Presbyterian Church of Ireland to found a college for theology and the arts. Magee College opened in 1865 primarily as a theological college, but accepted students from all denominations to study a variety of subjects.
@sarahmehrtens4193
@sarahmehrtens4193 Год назад
I don't suspect she did a crime. Executor is someone who takes care of all your affairs after your passing, in the case, burying her.

Interesting. The big tall posh grave with columns with the 2 statues at about 24 mins in that bears the name Martha Maria Magee.I found her name quite easily by googling it. Same death date and year and it does not mention her being executed. She had a hard sad life with lots of deaths around her, including sons and brothers but left alot of money to be used for charitable causes etc the name Rev Richard Dill is mentioned in her life story and is also on your gravestone. Has to be her but no mention of execution.

That's where the saying ''Saved by the bell comes from'' They use to have ropes or chains with bells mounted on top above the graves, the rope or chain was fed inside the coffin so if someone was buried alive they could ring the bell to alert those above ground. There is no recorded case of anyone ever ringing the bell from the coffin. The TV show Mythbusters did a section on this. They proved that there is no chance that anyone could live long enough inside a sealed coffin to be buried alive and survive. They proved that you wouldn't last more than a few short minutes from lack of oxygen and carbon dioxide build up. So you wouldn't even make it on the journey to the cemetery, never mind being buried alive. They used all sorts of equipment to test this myth. So all the stories you hear of bodies being exhumed and scratch marks found on the interior of the coffin where someone was buried alive and were attempting to scratch their way out is nothing but fable.
