She was too nice to be scrapped 😞 1976 Ford LTD Junkyard Find

I drive this one junkyard often but hardly ever stop as they never get any cool old cars. But every time I go by there and they have there gate open, I take a look as I drive by. Well this time I spotted the tail end of this 1976 Ford LTD so I had to check it out. And boy let me tell you, this one did not deserve to be junked. While it was missing the engine and transmission, the car was in really nice, dare I say almost survivor condition. The original paint was a little weathered and dirty but looked like it could clean up nice. The interior was super nice with a few minor flaws and there was hardly any rust or dents to speak of. All in all this one should have been saved.

I agree with you ,I see so many good cars in junk yards that should be either donated to some place that gives these cars to people who can't afford to buy one or sold online ,

I'm in Michigan the scrap value is what a few hundred dollars?? We would buy this body in two seconds, these cars rotted out and all gone 25 years ago. You guy's in Texas have so much old stuff you scrap everything, well the day's gonna come when you guy's have no old stuff left because you crushed everything

Whoa Nelley, 1976 and hit the bricks. That dealer was Dub Shaw Ford, located at East Berry and South Freeway or at 201 Henderson Street in Fort Worth, as they had two locations over the years, but they are both gone. We got the VIN, we win: 6 for 1976 model year, P for Twin Cities, MN assembly, 66 for LTD Brougham four door pillared hardtop, S for 400 V8 with two barrel, and the rest is the production sequence. The Twin Cities plant operated from 1925 to 2011 and the "The Way Forward Plan" by Ford corporate was the doomsday for the plant. We got the tag, we can brag: 53K for LTD Brougham four door pillared hardtop, 6V for Medium Gold exterior paint, CY for Gold vinyl top, GA for black interior trim, U for C-6 three speed automatic transmission, 2 for 2.75:1 rear end ratio, non-locking, and 52 for Dallas, TX sales district. The 400 V8 VIN code "S" engine was a half-fated attempt to make the larger V8s in the Ford line more efficient, but they were utter failures in that regard. Sloppy carburetion, fuel control, emission control and performance meant that you didn't do much better than if you had a 460 V8. The 400 V8 was offered from 1971 to 1979 and after 1978, it was the "top" passenger car engine for the 1979 model year. After 1979, the 400 only saw use in trucks through 1982. 400 V8s made prior to March 2, 1977 were known for cracking problems, and many others had detonation issues. Overall, a poor offering for Ford and fitting in line with their sloppy quality control of this era. It should be noted that GM, Chrysler and AMC were also no shining stars during this era, but Ford was at the bottom of the heap during this time. Whoa Nelley, 1976 and was never my pick. 400 VIN code "S" has always been a big mess. Motorcraft needs a life raft. Paint code 6V, it's over for thee. C-6 hit the bricks. Rear end code of 2, it's over for you. Vinyl top code of CY and going bye-bye. That's it, time to quit. You read out the VIN, and we win. You called out the tag, and we can brag. Going to be flat and that's that. "Let us cry for the bad man" (Lynyrd Skynyrd/Gimme Back My Bullets, 1976) and this one is ready for the trash can. Benny likes this one, but it's done. Four door pillared hardtop took a big flop. Going to get squished and even the "Malaise Era" Ford faithful (but surely not the Google Man) are probably just a slight bit pissed.

These were very popular on ALL the '70 cop shows.The GM (or just full size Chevy's)sold better.They were good with the 460's '75 and up.This one was old man garage kept all its life which explains the nice condition.It should be a Starsky and Hutch car(Hutch had a'73 Custom though).If this was in New England,it would be put back on the road in days!!

@@231gnx Yes, they sold well in their day. Fleets went for them, and police forces did as well as government fleets. The 400 V8 was an awful engine. It was slightly better with the 460 V8.

This Ford LTD looks fantastic. I remember when these vehicles came out in 1976. I was about 8 years old and my elementary school teacher had exactly one like that. This car probably had a 428 c.i. or a 390 c.i. engine under the hood. If i were you, I'd get this car out of the junkyard immediately and i would invest some money into it! The 390-428 era was long over by this time. The VIN shows it as a 400. He called it out as 5 but it's actually an S.

FE Engines " 390 428 " were last used in cars in 1971, Ford was still using 390-360 in Trucks in 1976 and it was the last year for them

@@jdpinbaytown They kept using FE 330, 361, 391 engines for industrial applications and in medium/heavy duty trucks through about 78-79. The 361 & 391 were still 360 & 390 ci, but the "1" was added at the end to distinguish it from non industrial. There were even 359 and 389 industrial engines, but they were lighter duty without forged steel cranks, thus why they changed the number. They also were still 360 & 390 ci. Then they switched over to the "385" motors in late 79 Big trucks and equipment got 429 and 370. 429 industrial had forged cranks, but the 370 had cast. 370 was same stroke as 429, but a much smaller bore.

No, this had a 400 V8 with two barrel. The 5th digit of the VIN is an "S" confirming that.

My wife's aunt had a '71 LTD that she really loved. Unfortunately, she stopped for a school bus on her way home from work one day and was rear ended by someone at 55 mph. She had minor injuries fortunately, but replaced the LTD with a new '75 in the same color green as the '71. I got to drive it a couple of times and really liked it. She kept the '75 for 3 years and 34K miles and traded it for a '78 as she was not happy that Ford was going to downsize the LTD in 1979. She kept the '78 for 12 years and 150K.

That is a beautiful car! I had a 76 2dr in the butter yellow with the gold velour paisley print interior. Had the 351m400, 2bbl back in the day. Was one of the best cars I ever owned...wish I had her today. Thanks for videoing this car!

Had the 302, thing was like the Cadillac of Ford. 300 mile trip didn't feel like 300 miles, except for when getting gas, so much room and float like a boat .

It looks same as my station wagon. I've had it probably since before I got my driver's license. The car was maybe 5 years old. Body's still in great shape and I would never think about shipping it off to a salvage yard! The only reason my wagon is still around is because she chipped a ring and I tore it apart greased it up crate at the engine and left it that way. I've been thinking I should pull it out of the barn and do something with it or get rid of it. I was into those cars I have a couple of T-Birds in there too. Somebody to snatch that car up and do something with it instead of just leaving it set there in the salvage yard

Torquie, quiet cabin, floats over railroad tracks and I have to say a much better build quality than my MK Vs. Huge difference from 73 to the 77-79 Luxury car builds. @@kevincostello3856 well I have two Thunderbirds 1977 I believe. I've had them for such a long time. They are two doors. Perfect for engine transplant because the 302 is in the big boats just don't make any sense. A baby blue and a very dark blue bordering on black. Both of them had land out tops. Well we can talk sometime if you like about the condition of those two. And I know that compared to yours these cars aren't big but man they really downsize them in the next year or so after mine. Then I've got a 66. We bought it off of the estate of the original owner through his son. And the man had ordered it. And we still have the plaque where it says Thank you Mr Jones for being a great customer and buying a Thunderbird from us. Okay it doesn't say that but it's the same plaque that they put on the dash when you custom ordered it back then and not just bought it off the lot. I don't know I've never bought a new car. I bought one that was about a year and a half old and that's about the newest one. I just hate spending money on a new car and watch it go down in value. When I can spend that money on an older car and as long as I maintain it it probably go up in value but at least not lose it. So I'll just wait for a new car to get old I guess. Haha anyway the 66 has a special story behind it. The sentimental value to that car as way off the charts. Much more than the financial value. But I would consider selling it to somebody I was absolutely certain would do the right thing with it. Because I don't know if I'll get to it. And that's the reason I'm considering selling the other ones. Including the wagon I mentioned. I see what people say hey it looks great you know it's got is springs for seats. I've had these cars for so long and some of them have been passed down we're talking maybe 50 years for some of what I got been in the family. I got a 56 to a hardtop Bel Air that I've always been told my Uncle bought it new. And I've got the sticker in the back window from the college that my cousin attended Way Way back in the day. My cousins way old enough to be my father as far as age. Because there was 30 years difference and in the dozen kids that my grandparents had. So I'll be honest I'm not specifically afford man I like them all. Some of them have certain models that I like better. Heck ain't got a 71 or 70 highboy Ford 4x4 short bed and it just drove out of 1983! Tires rims stickers everything because that's when the man parked it and I literally took it out of the barn and I was looking for a enclosed trailer to rent because I was going to keep as much as the 4-in dust that was setting on the truck on the truck. The dust is long gone. They're only that way once and I strongly believe that. And thank God because some vehicles need to be resurrected. But anyway you're 73 has the beak on the front of it doesn't it? I always thought kind of reminded me of the Concord. Please don't think I'm insulting your car because I had to I really like that body style always have. If back in the day they use those terms negatively maybe I don't remember in maybe my days don't go back quite that far. But anyway that's kind of my story and kind of ramping it up to start moving some of them. Adopt them out to you forever homes and what they say on Craigslist for pets. Then you find out there's a stiff adoption fee and Aunt. I got into crown vics for a while police interceptors specifically. We would cut them up put different bodies on frames all kinds of different things. But then they became kind of valuable. You know a 55 56 or so crown Vic is maybe 3/4 an inch difference on wheelbase with the more modern crown vics towards the end of the run. Got a fire truck too it's got like well less than 20,000 original miles on it in the hour clock is quite low. Actually I bought it cuz we're so far out by the time fire department got to us it's all done and over with. Hey my wife bought that story anyway and there is some truth to it. Well I can talk about cars for quiet lengthy time. I never really had any of the big Thunderbirds or bigger cars if I did have a Lincoln Town Car it was extended but it wasn't the limo version. It looked exactly like the one on dukes of Hazzard that they use for the president's car. That's been some years ago. All my Thunderbirds of two doors. I like looking in at one time would have liked to own one of the mark cars. Bigger the better. Had a couple opportunities but didn't jump on them when they were cheaper. But now it looks like they're going up can price about like anything else.

@@CAROLDDISCOVER-FINDER2525 Hey , how is you're day going?? My 73 does not have that " break " it has more of a bull nose on it, now the 71-72 has that Merc cyclone beak on it. But you can see where my bullnose originates from. Also you're spot on about the little Windsor 302 2bbl in that cavernous engine bay. Good buddy of mine yanked that little 302 mill right out and dropped a 460 in there, now it has a proper mill under hood.

It never ceases to amaze me how some people out there buy cars that are so rusted for a good deal of money and I have to put all sorts of money in them and there is one right there that was in perfect condition I wouldn't have took very much to make a nice ride out of it especially being once a vinyl top car look like that didn't have a Speck of rust on it is this sad to say that car in the yard but I got some of these guys that restored cars that have rust all over obviously didn't catch that beauty probably a few grand tops want to turn that LTD into a car that you would enjoy the drive on the streets and wow man no dash pad cracked another Rarity the only negative side I can tell she has no motor transmission old car like that I would love to drop a 390 big block inner by the biggest transmission and rear end one more great video.

Drop a cheap drivetrain in, make her a daily driver classic. Junkyards are stupid for crushing good shape pre-1980 cars. Once destroyed, you can never un-crush em.

It's amazing what you guys call junk down there. My mother bought a 77 new ( green with a white vinyl top) it was a good car. I remember my dad talking about how good it was on gas during summer northern Michigan trips. They sold it in 82 for 1,500.00 dollars. The guy drove it for years. Brings back memories

That Car is nice, it should be saved. Those cars rode real smooth when new. Say what you like but the interior condition of this and other fords you find Seem to hold up better than others. I think you need to add a Ford to your corral Benny.

Yep look at that it's a beautiful car it always was a beautiful car and full of power glad you saved it... it's the 1970s and there was nothing wrong with that... even though the engine was stolen and the transmission it's worth it to keep that car alive and eventually you will find a engine and transmission for it

That's a clean car! Try finding that up north, I'd daily the heck out of that. It's loaded with options too. Really common that these cars had manual everything or just a plug were the clock goes

That is clean and solid enough to consider an LS install for an ideal sneak-attack machine. Big, comfortable in a way that no new car is, invisible, and cheap. And they look sinister in back with steelies and dog dish caps.

Yikes. No "LS" swap for this one. If you're going to save it, I'd go sleeper/cop car style with a traditional Ford powertrain. I cringe at the "LS swap the world" mentality. LOL.

@@googleusergp Believe it or not, I'm a Ford guy. So the idea of a Coyote came up in my brain box, but they are expensive, large, and not easy to swap. All other current Ford engines just don't have the grunt to take on a 4,500 lb barge and make it dance, except for the Godzilla V8 - which is too new and expensive to want to use in one of these. So that leaves the old standby, any of tens of thousands of cheap truck motors in 5.3 or 6.0 flavor, there for the taking and making the power inexpensively - which is exactly how someone would want to build a '76 LTD, as nobody is going to throw too many stacks at this barge. If Ford didn't waste so much time on weak, complicated OHC modular motors, I'd be the first to suggest a Ford mill.

@@socalltd Not a bad idea, and those are tuned more for bottom end torque too. The controls pack and the power steering pump conversion could be pricey, though. Still, it would look great in there, wall to wall engine.

You know there’s a Facebook page just for those years of LTD’s. The other car was a 74 Torino. Only a couple of difference in the models. You might get a couple of dollars for the nice grille. I’d love that tilt column for my 73! Thanks for sharing your videos.

Usually the sad cases of survivors like these ending up in the scrapyards are becoming more common. When a grandparent or aunt and uncle die or can't legally drive anymore, these cars are inherited by the relatives (children, grandchildren, etc.). Instead of keeping it in the family they try to sell them, the examples that fail to sell end up in the scrapyard. Most young people don't want these older cars, too fuel thirsty for them.

It's like classics are popping up in yards all of a sudden. What's going on? I talked about a waste in the Torino video, but this one takes the cake! Probably the saddest video you made this year! All for a 400 V8? This could've been a survivor! Bring a Trailer material! What an absolute waste!!!! Is the yard selling it as is? I would LOVE to see a EV conversion (Ford Model LTD, a 302 swap, or an LS swap!

bit rusty but the vin on her. i think she had a 400cuin? if so, kinda funny that they took the motor and left the car. if you filmed just the engine and tranny from the LTD, i'd say crush it. although, i've made a lot of money fixing them back in the day :). its not the body's fault for being paired with a crappy motor. that is one clean and straight LTD. the full set of deluxe hubcaps in the trunk, right hand remote mirror, intermittent wipers, pw, a/c, cloth seats and maybe a few options i missed. she was no doubt ordered special for someone. hopefully son she is being saved. push her to the front of your salvage yard and one sign, $200.00. then all you guys get pizza for lunch. thanks for sharing this and good luck.

My dad bought one of those from the airport it was abandoned at in 78 for my brother and himself, it was a 76 ,brown with brown interior, had a 400 in it and had only around 30k on it. He paid 200 bucks for it and it was left there because the brakes failed, they put something other than brake fluid in it so my dad had to replace everything even the lines. Well after about a year my brother did what he always did back then, fucked up, it was winter he was doing 60 on a back road, drinking a beer and trying to eat a slice of pizza when he hit a patch of ice, did a couple of 360s, flew backwards off the road right into a gaint rock bashing in the rear end bad, interestingly about 4 yrs later my friend Sam wrecked in the same spot and totaled his 74 impala 2 door, he wasn't drinking or eating just speeding, he hit some ice and went off the road backwards and hit the same rock my bro did and interestingly Sam's impala was also brown in and out,that patch of road must've hated brown cars. My brother still drove that car with the assend smashed in for another 6 months when he went to visit a friend the next state over and when he came back on the interstate he set the cruise control at 120 he made it about 60, 70 miles before the engine blew. When he got it towed home he took off the oil pan and dumped out a pile of busted rods and piston about 6 inches high and a foot in diameter, it went to the scrap yard a few weeks later.

Am I right is that a Canadian Ford with the unusual taillamp bar? I don't remember seeing that kind of fully red taillamp on American fords of that period because they usually have a leatherette panel across.
