Jaws certainly had an impact on wariness in the ocean . But this was just a scary movie . Highly doubt it stopped anyone having or contemplating having an affair . In fact I'd go as far as to say some adulterers took their bit on the side to see it and then went home and shagged their brains out 😂❤
@@sylviacarlson3561 Since when are people "so gun happy"??? 😂😂😂 How many people do you think are getting shot each year? It's an average of 38,000 52% are Sue Is Sides So let's say 19,000 (for easy math) And 90% of those 19,000 are gang related. Are you in a gang? Or affiliated with one? That leaves 1900. And 90% of those are when criminals get shot by either a homeowner or the cops. That leaves 190. (And thats being generous) 190. In a country with 400 million guns. In a country with 350 million people. More people break their neck falling off the bed or in the shower each year. More people drown in a 5 gallon bucket each year. So tell me.... where are these "gun happy" people? 😂😂😂 There are over 100,000 stab wounds each year! And those are NOT done by cops. You really need to open your eyes to the reality.
They were both so good in this. The range of reaction on Douglas's face as he tries to gain control of the situation - the way Close is reading him as she calculates how he's reacting each step of the way....this kind of cat-and-mouse scene is excellent.
"Whole means complete. If your life's complete, why were you with me?" That is a very good question to a mystery and a paradox that we will never solve.
Because he likes having sex with other women. That has nothing to do with how he feels about his wife. Also, Alex is grasping at straws because she refuses to accept that he doesn't want something more.
Two superb actors. But Ms. Close had to add an extra layer of talent to this - her performance here is legendary! How she changes her emotions at the blink of an eye is unbelievable!
She knew he was married so she is just as much to blame. Did he deserve to be shamed and have his name dragged through the mud, his reputation ruined, and to have his wife leave him in disgrace while taking nearly everything he had? Yes. Did his wife and daughter deserve what she did? Hell no. When I saw Gloria Trillo (one of Tony's affairs if you haven't seen the show) in The Sopranos she reminded me of this movie, particularly the scene where she takes Carmella home while her car is in the shop and drives in a way that scares Carmela on the way home. Of course, Carmella was silently enabling Tony for most of the series, so she's a little different than Beth in this movie.
Glenn Close was just the right degree of crazy. She was quiet, but it was all in the eyes. There was no ranting. The woman was a dangerously bats***. An astounding performance.
He brought this on himself! He shouldve thought about the possible ramifications before he cheated! Yes she was a psycho but him playing the victim was pathetic!
1st Card, she knew he was bored and offered a solution to the boredom of the marriage. 2nd Card, he was not aware of the damage this would cause to his family. 3rd Card, she did not react to accusations, and instead pressed on with the issue. 4th Card, she knew he was not valuing his marriage. 5th Card, she was direct and not afraid to say what she wanted. Offered a deal she had no intention of keeping. She knew he would not do background checks.
No it didnt tbh, it worked the opposite way. Men just started marrying these BPD type psycho hoes instead of simply hooking up then dumping them, and then cry about how they want pure virgin waifus in the last 10 years after the women they chose walked out, took their kids, home, money and everything else they got and then still get more in the court systems.
Man he played it all wrong…..how you go raw with a stranger and have a whole wife…..he let her pull him in….not every man can be a playa….he played the whole thing like amateur night at the Apollo….This movie just made men be aware of the red flags…monogamy is not natural
No, not for monogamy. For fidelity . The opposite of monogamy is polygamy. In polygamy, no one deceives anyone and everyone knows and agrees with the situation.
I've always noticed the billboard in the background, as they are discussing an abortion,in the background it shows a very happy couple, celebrating the fact that the woman is pregnant. The billboard reads -' A GLORIOUS BEGINNING!'
And rightly so. Because it was pure manipulation. She wanted to use that child to keep control over the guy, which the guy may deserve, but the unborn child does not. She is textbook Borderline Personality Disorder.
She was crazy, but he legit treated her like shit. It is possible to fall in love with someone over a weekend, and he could have told her no in a lighter, easier way, or not started the affair at all.
There would be no light way to say no to this. He shouldn't have slept with her, much better. But remember, she misled him more than he did. In their first meeting, what was her question: 'Are you discreet?' famous line. She said she was discreet too. She seemed calm and independent, knowing what she wanted out of that. 'We're two adults.' she goes on. He should have gone home, okay, but both were wrong. However, he didn't mislead her. He told her he was married from the start. She misled him. It was a fun weekend, that was all. It was lust and craziness; she didn't love him. She would have displayed psychotic behaviour even if he was single.
@@jaketapper8910 No he is a complete selfish a**hole and she is an outright malignant psychopath... The only ones you sympatize with are the wife, kid and pets...
@jaketapper8910 No one's celebrating mental illness. They're celebrating shear karma at its finest. Chauvinistic, patriarchal hypocrisy, on the other hand, is celebrated way too much. This is the finest example of that.
There is more to that. Men need support. If the woman treats their man like an appliance, this is already asking for trouble. Boredom and routine are also slow killers, as they both become complicit in the comfort, and when 1 tries to break out and the other is not willing, something like this happens.
@@russkate88 That is a way of running away from the consequences. An abortion is a quick fix so he doesn’t have to answer to his wife or anyone about his affair and Alex will leave him alone. But as it turns out she doesn’t want an abortion and wants to have the child. She’s willing to face the consequences but Dan wants to run away from them.
@@T1000skynetforever To me it looks more like she plans to use the child to get control over Dan and keep on harassing him and his family 3:00 Besides why on earth would she want to have a child with someone who obviously doesn't want to have anything to do with her?
@@Naomiiiish She simply doesn’t let him throw her aside like any hooker on the street corner. She says she’s willing to raise the child on her own as a single mother. All she wants is for him to acknowledge the consequences of his actions. He’s by no means a victim. He cheated on his wife while being happily married and having a daughter. All because he was bored on a weekend.
@@T1000skynetforever Oh I never said he was a victim, he did more than cheating, he made one bad decision after another but he didn't treat her like you described it. But it did led to a dangerous person coming into not just Dan but his wife and daugher's life. Her constant calls to his office and home and following him tells me that she is not going to do this child raising by herself. And before they started their romance they had a conversation in a restaurant about being discreet, so it looked like they were on the same page. Dan is guilty but Alex is not a victim to me.
I still say Glenm Close deserved that oscar that year for this role her best performance and she has many but she played that I've watched this movie probably 8 times.
@@katcraig7525 You are correct! I was mixing up this Oscar win upset with another one, which was when Annette Bening lost in 2000 to Hilary Swank. Hilary Swank won for her performance in Boys Don't Cry, which meant that Annette Bening didn't get that Oscar win for her performance in American Beauty. Annette was a powerhouse in that role! I never saw Boys Don't Cry, but Annette's performance in American Beauty was FLAWLESS! (side note... Hilary Swank won her 2nd Oscar in 2005 for her performance in Million Dollar Baby, beating out Annette a 2nd time for Annette's Oscar nomination in that same category for her performance in Being Julia. Ouch! It's 2024 and Annette **still** hasn't been awarded an Oscar. Ugh... I hope Annette will get her flowers too soon!)
@@patricias5122it is acting but this came out in 1987. Main cast was born in the 40s or 50s. Different time period. Different things taught, morals, decisions, etc.
The "cheaters" are ultimately the problem. Sadly blinded by "opportunity" and yet devoid of any sense of consequences. The wake of damage it leaves behind is tragic and reckless on so many levels.
The fact that Michael Douglas has always been either an antagonist or an unsympathetic protagonist, makes his performance here (to the extent that he’s acting and not just being himself) even more believable. You end up hating his character for what he did to his mistress, and for the hell he puts his family through. Almost as much as you hate Gordon Gecko in Wall Street, or the movie wherein he hires Viggo Mortensen’s character to murder his wife, played by Gweneth Paltrow. And about the same as in The Game.
Why do so many men humiliate themselves AND their families by CHOOSING to cheat in the first place? Obviously he DID want her. He was with her multiple times. He just had absolutely no idea what he was getting himself into with her mindset. HIS CHOICE to sleep with a total stranger.
Why do most mens manipulate and lying, they want family but to do what they want but when women do something that's a problem. They made fun of mens and womens relationships but of course first one they're acting like they owning us and doesn't treat us like humans. But most of you womens still live with pink sunglasses on your eyes you don't wanna see reality, if mens ever respected us they wouldn't do things that they're still doing and putting nose in our lives, decisions and other things that's a sad truth...
Even the most loyal men tend to at least look at other women once in a while and the reason is because there are always other attractive women appearing and looking different from his wife who attract his attention and sometimes this uncontrollable attraction leads to stained actions. It is the same with women, maybe a little less, but it also happens with them. Watch the movie Unfaithful 2001.
Maybe if wives would take care of their husbands in the bedroom instead of conveniently having a headache every morning noon and night, husbands wouldn’t have to go out to find physical attention elsewhere… And before you say that shit about wives don’t have to have sex with their husbands if they don’t want to and they have a right to refuse whenever, then husbands have a right to not be loyal and go elsewhere whenever as well. Fair game!
When jumping straight into bed with someone comes back to haunt you. Whether is cheating or the person is single, get to know someone first and see if they turn out to be weird.
Yeah but you're a guy. Different for us, isn't it? We can make babies into our 70s, or most men anyway. It's a different story for women. Approaching 40 or going past that, it might be too late.
@jockejocke1 a kid at 70 🤔 Kicking a ball around at 80 with back issues when the kid is 10 . Graduation when they're 20 and you're 90 and use a walking frame 😒
@@chateaupig826 I only said it's very possible for a 70+ dude to impregnate a woman. Happens all the time. If it's appropriate or very smart, is another issue all together. I wouldn't recommend it :)
And most of them still doing that, there's no cure for their narcisim and manipulations many's are born like that now you know why is our society like this. It's all because of them
Stay faithful to the one you love no matter how hard times get. It's not worth it to sleep around and possibly find yourself in this situation and to hurt deeply your loved one.
I can understand it Life is not black and white for everybody. Sometimes things just happen . against your better judgment you get an excitement from outside that is lacking in your relationship . That's it .
@@taroman7100...and evil. She kidnapped his daughter, and boiled their pet rabbit. That's way beyong needy and desperate. Nothing redeeming or sympathetic in that character.
How did she just meet this man, sleep with him a few times and already she is attempting to cut her wrists and crying over him??? That didn't take long. What an absolute lunatic.
I mean, yeah. She has mental problems. Close said that she decided her character, Alex, had been sexually abused as a child, and never dealt with that trauma. It's really very sad.
Calm down.... What's the matter ? Did he hurt you ? We're you not good enough for him ? Look at the way your speaking. No wonder he left you. WEIRDO !!!!!!
Blah blah blah. The whole notion of marriage for life and monogamy is unnatural, which is why it fails more often than not. As a society, the sooner we accept this, the sooner we can move to a better, more sustainable family model.
Granted, he was willing to leave it up to her. But If the movie had been made today, then yes, he would definitely have been begging her to do that just so he wouldn't be caught.
Trivia: Actress/ dancer Jean Spangler vanished in LA, on 10/9/1949. She was never found. Jean was supposedly pregnant , and was working in a film that starred....Kirk Douglas (Michael Douglas' actor dad). A note to 'Kirk", was found in Spangler's purse. ~LIFE IMITATES ART~
If it was the man who doesn't take NO for an answer, everyone would be saying he's a psycho stalker. As it is the woman, everything is the guy's fault for having a casual affair.
She contradicted herself in this scene and in a later scene. She literally said “whether you’re a part of it or not”. Shes telling him she wants the baby whether if he’s there or not but in a later scene she says she’s never going to go away and he needs to be responsible for their kid.
@@kristymcdowell6185 I did notice it entirely. She just wants him. I seriously wonder even if she WAS pregnant. I definitely would have asked to speak to tje doctor. On a separate note, I think if you have an affair with a married person, it is SUPER fucked up to not accept the situation for what it is. Involving their family is going way too far. If the roles were reversed and a guy had an affair with a wife and acted this way the audience would totally disapprove.
@@vitamindealer7915 He broke in her apartment and found a positive pregnancy test. Also, the scene in the law firm library when he confides in his attorney buddy Jimmy, he said "I called her doctor, and the doctor said "congratulations". I could only imagine what she said to him." 😊
From a psychologists perspective I need to know. Let’s say Dan was single when he meets Alex, and they end up being together. Would Alex be genuinely happy with him? Would being with him keep her sane? Or would she still be miserable and depressed, finding ways to accuse him of cheating?
I watched this movie for the first time about two weeks ago and Glenn Close's character made me feel so uncomfortable. She reminded me of a girl I used to know who treated men horribly. She did crazy things to them like stalk them, make up crazy allegations, she once tracked down a guys mum on social media and joined her yoga class just to befriend her to get revenge on him. The list goes on. I hadn't thought about that girl in such a long time and this movie reminded me of her so much it gave me the chills
So many crazy people like that. I made out absolutely zero sex and she was telling people I was stalking her and say I was a pos. I told the RA's they responded just give a week no believe her your like the third guy this has happened to. She'll find another poor bastard. She did too.
What if they are two villains in one movie? A lying cheating one and a husband stealing, child abducting, rabbit murdering one? Could that be a possibility?
@@annebos4634exactly. She got herself killed. She took it way too far. If she didn't like the fact that he rejected her, she could have put her big girl panties on and moved on with life. Going after his wife and child who are the real victims is disgusting. She deserved what she got.
Of course, he played with this women who obviously has mental problems married mens should learn that they're married. But they're obviously better in manipulating and making fun of men and women relationship and not treating women like human!🤮
Funny, at the time, I was younger than 36 when I watched this film and didn't realise how young and gorgeous she looked, despite the character she played!
This movie for a man, is the most accurate description of a true horror movie. Some thing that can actually happen. Something of the utmost insanity that you are stuck thinking about day and night. Very disturbing.
That movie scared the crap out of most every man in America when it came out. Not just if you were or thought of being a philanderer, it was the first real depiction of resistance like that on screen. Between Glenn Close and the Terminator we understood relentless by the end of the 1980's
Stfu. She knows he's married but free one weekend, they both agree to a one-night stand, and he's made no promises or hidden anything from her. The next day, she turns into a witch who won't let him go until she's destroyed his life. Who is the psychopath?
He had sex with a woman who was not his regular partner and didn’t think to talk about contraception or use a condom. This was 1987, unprotected sex could kill you!
Right. He thought she was like a Bud Bundy's blow up doll. An inanimate object that asks for nothing in return .... ever. Wrong She is a human being with a heart, a mind, a body and a soul!!!!
Her voice on the cassete tape she made him to me was almost the scariest scene..." Maybe you dont even like girls, do I scare you, Dan? Boo! " It's quiet but shaky and full of rage..
I am single and I don't even cheat even with other singles. It is difficult world to date as a man in this dating app world. If you are married, you are not missing out on anything.
Glenn was incredible in this role. I think she absolutely deserved the Oscar. We're still talking about her role 30+ years later. The measure of a Best Actress performance imo.
