This 1980 image of the Green in Sheffield city centre just shows how much they are laughing in your faces when they talk about Grey to Green which is already looking jaded and will end up being badly maintained. www.buymeacoff...
I loved the old Peace Gardens. I loved the buildings around there too, even the dreaded "Egg Box". My parents got married at the Wedding Cake in 1976, still have the photos of them outside, loads of family attended and it was a sunny day. Lots of people in flares and wide "kipper" ties etc and people holding a cigarette in the shot.
You are so right Tim. The area at St Pauls back of the Peace Gardens is bleak and creates a wind tunnel. Yes, it was a garden area with flower beds bottom of Norfolk Street til they built (erected) the ugly Arundel Gate interchange. Remember "Sheffield in Bloom" big tubs of flowers everywhere and the Goodwin Fountain surrounded by flowers.
I remember 'Sheffield in bloom'...Sheffield looked amazing, every corner you turned you could see masses of flowers. I have some old post cards somewhere picturing it all. Awful shame what we see in town nowadays.
The city center back in the 1980s had a lot of character and was clearly doing well plenty of buses going in plenty of options to go shopping and go out at night time . You compare it to what they Is now it's lego land students and upper middle class . Looking at fargate and the costs on that double what it was it's likely the rest will run well over budget and likely break the councils funds just like other labour citys.
Sheffield back in the 70' and 80''s was way better than it is now and as you say it was much more greener. I watched your video about 'Chapel walk' and i was sad to see how bad that's got. It used to be jam packed down there on any day of the week and there were some great little shops. If only we could build a time machine eh?!!
Sheffield is of course a huge joke because it has a transport system suiting not the user but the provider so from 2-30 to 4-30pm you will get no transport. The bus service ceased except for schools so you are abandoned wherever. What a joke and it's never been any different in this village calling itself a city.
I seem to remember sitting out on grass on a summers day outside the cathedral mid to late 70's as a child with my father unless that's a false memory .
@@timawells I know you bug the council a lot with freedom of requests etc I think it would be interesting for you to bring this up with them and councillors about how we've lost so many grassy areas in the city centre
@@retrorambles517 Not with crowds sunbathing. It all changed after some major works and it was paved over . We had some great summers back then also (rose tinted glasses lol)
@@retrorambles517 I was going to send the video to the CEO and Leader of the council. But a bit busy at the moment. Asked them how many car parking spaces for employees in the city centre.
