The Edale Station sure looks a busier than it was in 1967-1968 when I was a Yank exchange student at a school in Cheshire. We'd go to Edale for a walk on the moors -- always spectacular and sometimes scary. Getting from Cheadle to Edale and back via train was always an adventure in itself. In those days, the lone Edale pub served the most delicious local cheese butties, perfect with a pint of stout! Edale now seems so far away as write from my home in Hawai'i.

Thank you for this Dylan. The Hope Valley line is very dear to my heart. My very first journey on this line was in the late 60's. For my first proper walk as a teenager which was Edale station via Hollins Cross, Castleton and Hope Station. In those days the stations were manned and I remember at the end of the walk sitting in the waiting room at Hope Station in front of a coal fire on a cold winters day waiting for the train back to Sheffield. The motive power in those days was what came to be remembered as Heritage DMU's. I can remember subsequent journeys when the class 150's were introduced.

1:25 - Whilst this is almost true there is one anomaly. The Leeds to Carlisle service sees an employee with a trolley board the train at Settle to offer a small in seat service selling not only snacks and drinks but also memorabilia such as postcards with Ribblehead viaduct on them. This service is however very expensive and is only available from Settle onwards… Thanks for this awesome video though about one of my favourite Yorkshire lines!
@paultidd9332

The said trolley service isn’t provided by Northern; it’s provided by the Settle to Carlisle Railway Trust, all contributions help keep the line and interest going.

Thanks for this one Dylan. It was short & sweet. Even my hubby who never watches anything, stopped to take a look. For being 35 years old, that train appears very well kept & updated. I have to say my heart always sinks when a 150 rocks up, they have become the Pacer replacement of railway travel misery - particularly uncomfortable when full and it just takes one person to open the window in winter to freeze the whole carriage!! It's interesting to see a local run on a commuter train. They really pack them in with that 3 + 2 configuration. I'd hate to see it at a crowded time. As it was, you had your car practically to yourself. The snowy hilltops added to the beautiful green valley scenery.

That one looks luxurious. You should try the late night one from Manc Dylan - plasticky covered, bus-type seats and looking very old indeed. But I love these. There used to be a main line electric service between Sheffield and Manchester via the Woodhead Tunnel. The quality of this service was far better than the Hope Valley Line. What a pity that the rail link between two such important cities is now served by aging commuter stock. Let’s hope that those pressing for the Woodhead service to be restored manage to win the day

I took this train from Manchester to Edale in 1996. Those were class 101 trains back in the day. They seemed rather ramshackle: The diesel engine sounded seriously ropey and acceleration was paused frequently seemingly for the driver to manually shift gears. They were long in the tooth back in the 1990s. I’ve got a vague recollection that they might have been replaced by pacers, and despite their below average reputation, they were an improvement.

Cracking review Dylan! Gotta love Hope Valley, such a beautiful route. Its recently been more common to see 195s on this service though 150s still run occasionally and as someone who commutes in both units, I'd personally take a 195 any day for pretty much all trips as they are quiet, air conditioned, and relaxing to ride on.

This is a great little journey, one which I would love to have fitted in during my 2018 trip, but I'm not too fussed as you have filled in the gap wonderfully. I had occasion to change trains at both Sheffield and Manchester Piccadilly on separate journeys I did, so both stations were familiar. The scenery is indeed well worth the trip. And the historic mills and canal bridge added to the interest. I was surprised to hear Marple aqueduct viaduct was the highest of its type. I thought Pontcysylite near Llangollen was higher. When your class 150 arrived at the start and I heard the brakes squeal, I thought "This'll be interesting!". I nearly had to reach for the sunglasses when you stepped aboard. Wow! That refurbished interior was quite a surprise. Yes, the seat spacing looks a tad cozy, but the comfort was quite satisfying. Don't you wish all trains had comfortable seat padding like that! And the cleanliness of the wall panelling and toilets! Wow!,again. The only sad part of this presentation was the distinct lack of passengers. Unfortunately, the pandemic has really spooked people away from regular rail travel and, I believe, your politicians, health officials and the rail industry media haven't exactly encouraged it either. Thanks again for another interesting UK domestic rail trip. Looking forward to the next.

There looked to be a decent smattering being picked up for the time in the afternoon. It's not about the distance, but more about the level of competition between the two points (which could allow for easy cheap advance fares) and also the complexity of the network between the two points ticketed which would potentially give a greater variety of permitted route between the two points ticketed, hence leading to a steep increase in prices; split-ticketing restricts this, hence why the prices can sometimes be significantly lower if you split at certain points inbetween

I've used this line many times over the years, visiting friends who live in Grindleford. I've always enjoyed the ride, the scenery looks different in every weather. The frequency has increased in recent years, partly because there are active user groups on this route who encourage usage. There are also non-stop trains operated by both East Midlands and Trans-Pennine (going via Stockport), so you don't have to endure the all-stations Northern service. However, there are always people who seem to mis-hear the announcements and end up on these trains by mistake for the through journey. The current units are infinitely better than the Pacers formerly used on this route.

I thought you might have mentioned the sidings at 9:03. They are for the Hope Valley Cement Works. It's a long time since I've done a full trip on the Hope Valley line in daylight (probably about 1995.) I must do it sometime. I got a Pacer back from Manchester in early 2020, just before the pandemic; the 150s look like a great improvement. It also struck me on that trip how rarely I use Sheffield Station these days, as opposed to Meadowhall, Rotherham or Doncaster, which is a pity, because Sheffield is much nicer architecturally.

Lucky you. Dropping on such a modern train. I always end up with an old bus train. They are way too bright though

So many UK train vloggers are repeating the same trips its good to see something a little different (or perhaps even ordinary)
