Would love more travel reports from Sweden and Norway Dylan. As somebody travelling a lot for pro hockey, knowing more about the train systems and how to save money, and take advantage of the opportunity to ride the rails on my journey would be amazing

9:01 "It's a shame I didn't get any daylight on this trip, as I'm told the Oslo to Bergen route is supposed to be really quite scenic." Well that's an understatement. I've taken this trip several times, and it's really quite breathtaking in daylight. It's almost criminal to take this trip in darkness, unless you've taken it several times is daylight already. I would also add, since you commented on the Oslo station but not the one in Bergen that it is connected via a pedestrian bridge to a shopping centre and the main bus station, with the city's light rail passing between the bus station and the railway station.

It's really a shame you didn't catch a morning train. The trip up over the mountains is truly spectacular, as well as the twisting and winding amongst the fjords on the west coast, among the most amazing in all of Europe. You really did miss quite a lot. Take it from me, you really should do it again during daylight.

The big information screen you see at 2:11 is the largest of its kind in Europe (or maybe the world). It also has a digital reproduction of the original station clock. It even goes 1 second too fast like the old mechanical one, and makes a second pause at 59 seconds to "get back on track" before turning over to a new minutes.

And I have now read that the original clock was a Swiss Mondaine StopToGo movement. They are also used by the Swiss railways. They even made wrist watches with that behaviour.

13:02 - Finse is also only available by train. There are no roads there. And they filmed the ice planet Hoth in Star Wars 5 there. 😀

Hi Dylan, nice report. I did the trip last September at daylight. I highly recommend to do so. There are parts in between where the movie starwars was filmed. So everyone can imagine the scenery. It is one of the most beautiful trainrides in the world.

Glad you made it to Norway, a beautiful place worth the extra expense. Your trip essentially parallels the "Norway in a Nutshell" train ride, a tourist train that is actually worth taking. The trains look old fashioned with lots of wood inside. at Myrdal you can get off the train, take a steep and scenic ride on another train to Flam and take a boat through the fjord. The trip ends in Bergen. I've done it a couple times. It would make an interesting trip for you though it should be daytime in summer, or for less crows, in early autumn.

The railway company "Vy" is pronounced almost like "Wee" but with pouting lips to make the Norwegian Y sound. And the "gruppen" part is omitted. "Vy gruppen" is just a name for the entire Vy Rail, Vy Bus and Vy Sweden group.

For an unusual view (cab view) I suggest RailCowGirl and TrainThor channels. Two cab view channels that are really nice (the first one for the Bergen Line, the second one for regional and commuter lines around Oslo)

NSB (now Vy) used to have first and second class tickets, but switched to a system where you just paid an "upgrade" to a regular ticket for some conveniences instead. The other operators like SJ (everything north of Lillehammer) and GoAhead (the southwestern train lines) have the same concepts. Too bad you travelled when it was dark and could not see the snow-covered plains properly, though. The area around Finse was also where the Hoth outdoor scenes for _Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back_ were filmed.

@@s125ish We had a case of the reforms, and the trains were split up, and parts of the company separated out. So there is more bus business than train business there now. The name change was part of a move into the future where train lines would be "privatized" (i.e.smaller monopolized subsets of the railway handed pout based on competing bids).

When I traveled this route some years ago it was at the end of April which is perhaps the ideal time of year for this journey. High up everything was still covered in so much snow that I felt like the train was crossing Antarctica. But unlike when traveling in winter, the daylight lasts really long which made for breathtaking views under the bright blue sky.

You did indeed miss some amazing scenery by travelling in the dark. I travelled the line, going the other way, in 1975 on a brilliantly sunny day. This, of course, was before the Finse tunnel was built. The highest parts of the line were surrounded by snow fences and ample amounts of snow even in late June. I also recall that prices in Norway, in those days, were much more reasonable than in Denmark or Sweden. The times have changed!

They did used to be all pretty comparable, more or less on a par with Germany (which I remember in the 80s was a bit more expensive relative to the UK that it is today). I think Norway staying outside of the EU has pushed up their prices relative to the rest of the Scandinavia, as weirdly even though they are in the EEA and schengen area, they *aren't* in the customs union, which makes things like groceries stupidly expensive. Thankfully, if you're working in Norway, the wages are fantastic which pretty much makes up for it - but it really makes visitors eyes water! I hope they do join the EU one day - I think it'd be good for both Norway, but even more so, I love the Norwegian way of working and living, and they'd be a force for good in Europe.

In Norway you use tap-water - its superclean all over the country. A Coke 1.5 liter cost 1,3 -1,7 dollar.

I know everyone else has written this, but I just CANNOT believe you took the MOST beautiful train ride in the whole world IN THE DARK! Was that just a rookie mistake or did you honestly not know about how stunning the train ride is?! I took this train in August 2018, and I really hope you'll go back and re-take it. Absolutely worth the crazy expense of visiting Norway.

You definitely need to do this journey in daylight sometime. The Flam railway from Myrdal is also a well worthwhile trip as is the Trondheim to Oslo or vice versa route.

Thank you very much, or as,wr say in Norway, Tusen takk, for this wonderful trip report. I have been working as a conductor in Norway for 20 years, the last 13 years on the Bergen Railway. So i know this route as very well. For me its was very interesting thay you focus on product itself on the Journey to Bergen. There have been many many videos about the scenery along the Bergen Railway (thats a good thing) but very little about product, the trains itself, prices, what to expect etc. Not many of those videos Well done ❤

Ah, the moment you mentioned "December" I knew it would be a night time journey! I travelled most of this route in summer 1981, Oslo - Myrdal then on to Flam. The journey required a change of train then a descent into the fjord. Returned same day, back same route. lovely scenary, and Flam was very picturesque. Many properties with grass growing on the roofs, very good for insulation in winter. Also, noted, no face masks!

Spent a lot of time in Bergen and Stavanger when I was working and found the transport there very good and not too expensive by Norwegian standards. Fantastic scenery between Bergen and Oslo so as others have said a pity you missed out on that. As usual your very informative narrative really enhances your videos. Keep up the good work even if you do support Leeds !!...lol

it's not cheap at all to travel in norway even for norwegians, long distance trains costs normally between 60 and 100€ for one way trip in second class, i guess he was lucky there (you can buy flight ticket for less then 10€) + unfortunatelly trains are often late here - since most tracks in norway are single tracked

Happy New Year Dylan! As many have commented, this trip has some stunning scenery and I truly hope you return during summer when it can best be appreciated and daylight is long. As far as finding it expensive, I don’t really give much alarm to it being Swedish and having siblings living in Switzerland and in San Francisco, California. Guess I’m just immune to the shock factor. It is what it is and glad that you didn’t let that interfere with having a good trip. 😉

I have been on the Bergensbanen twice first time my partner and I got off at Myrdal to travel the Flaamsbana to Flaam then took a ferry to Bergen along the Sognefjord The Flaamsbana is a short but spectacular line very tourist as most of the train got out to travel the line The second time we did the full trip to Bergen but we did it in June and at the highest points there was still snow on the ground. Some Americans had got on wearing shorts and t-shirts only very suitable for Oslo - which was warm but they got cold very quickly in the mountains. The journey from the heights down to Bergen was beautiful and I would urge folks to travel in the summer months as you get to see much more especially if you take the early train.

You must do this trip in the day there is a 0830ish departure from Oslo, and stop at Myrdal and take the line down to Flam in winter. The scenery is stunning. It is a real shame you missed it in the dark.

Hi Dylan. About Easter 2000 I made a trip from Bergen and on the Flam line. Really heavy snow and it was blinding. Next time I will remember to take sunglasses! my eyes were stinging.

Ruined around Norway a few years back, and went to Bergen. It’s a really lovely city, going back to Norway cruising this July. Glad you warned people about the prices, it really is very expensive.

Norwegians have better payments compare to rest of europe. And the wages and price level is fitted to eachother. Thats why is so expensive to others to visit Norway.

nice report from bergensbanen, reason for no internet on the train was that VY was upgrading it's wifi system on all bergensbanen trains at that time + upgrade trains (especially sleeping coaches) for better experience, i guess you just did the trip right before changes were made

fun facts: the NSB EL18 locomotive is based on the Swiss LOK 2000 (Re 460), it has the same exterior design and on winter there is the double traction of the train, on warmer seasons there's only one loco at the head of the train

It would be extremely easy to travel here from Britain to Belfast, as they are both in the UK. You could then use the Enterprise rail service between Belfast and Dublin, where there are no border checks. Our InterCity trains consist of both DMUs and loco-hauled stock.
