The fact that you needed a psych class to know how this works gives me life. Knowing i don’t need college and can move on to smarter and better studies.
@@Aboutoslapahoe I'm a graphic designer and I had to take a psycology class. Okay congrats? You feel better about yourself I guess? You want a cookie or something? And you don't need college but you're gonna move on to "smarter and better studies"....have fun I guess lmfaooo
operant conditioning is used in everyday life. I love psychology :D It's my major in college with a minor in speech communication! It is important in learning and behavior change, and Health Psychology
Kylie Crawford. No, I'm watching it because someone using the name wht. Chocolate was asking me for a 3some internet "coitus" session between me, them, and another guy. And, I thought, "🤔 who else refers to sex as coitus and uses chocolate as reinforcement? Hmmm..."
Yes Leonard is my favorite character on the show. And I know nothing about Johnny Galecki. Which is wonderful. He could be conservative or liberal or have some sort of goofy conspiratorial views. And I don't know. This is the way entertainers and mass-market products should behave. I noticed I also don't know the political views of any of the other Big Bang Theory actors and actresses.
@@swright4171 yeah unless they want to be in a niche Market. People could say it's a free speech issue. But I'm not trying to prevent him from speaking. It's just that I'm not going to give my business to someone who pisses me off. The day Domino's Pizza got political is the last day I gave them my business.
How did you manage to screw up what he just said? It's "run by witches" runned, isn't a word RU-vid even highlights it for you and you still let it slip.
We had to identify the error made in this clip during my psychology class. It turns out that administering electric shocks is a type of positive punishment, not negative reinforcement as depicted on the show.
Exactly. I think the show realized its mistake here, because in last week's episode of the latest season Sheldon brought up this issue saying the term gets misused all of the time.
Actually if the shocks were put on constantly then removed every time something happened that Sheldon was looking for then it would be Negative Reinforcement - the removal of an undesirable stimulus with the goal of increasing a target behavior.
I mean in a way, I agree with Sheldon. “You weren’t happy in my previous approach to dealing with her.” Given Sheldon’s personality type, this is the most harmless, and in fact, harmonious, approach to dealing with another person.
My brother is getting punched in the throat for giving me all kinds of chocolate I swear I SWEAR he done this to me a few years ago. I just realized it. Smartass genius.
In case your teachers ask what's wrong with this clip, it's that Sheldon incorrectly identifies spraying Leonard with water as "negative reinforcement" (the removal of a bad stimulus to encourage a behavior) when it is actually positive punishment (introducing a bad stimulus to discourage a behavior.)
Yeah they incorrectly did it in the ghostbusters episode i think. Positive is adding a stimulus and negative is removing it. Reinforcement is a positive stimulus and punishment is a negative one.
@@BlackDiamond2718 actually its correct in the ghostbusters episode. Punishment & Reinforcement is referring to discouraging and encouraging behavior respectively. Positive & negative refers to adding or removing a stimulus. Positive - Adding a stimulus Negative - Removing a stimulus Punishment - "to discourage behavior" Reinforcement - "to encourage behavior"
@@albythe2ndI'm glad you spelled that out for us because I didn't want to take the time to explain it 👍 I was secretly tickled for remembering all that 31 years after college graduation 😁
"Interesting. Sex works even better than chocolate. I wonder if anyone else has stumbled onto that?" Yes, Sheldon. Nearly every woman who ever lived. Certainly every woman I have ever known.
@@harrysapienn7911 When I was in my 20s, I had an on again, off again, relationship. Was staying at my mom's house. As I was running out the door, she stopped me and said, "That girl's taking advantage of you." I just smiled and said, "I know. Bye, Mom!" Yeah, we know. That's why men are willing to work themselves into early graves. It's all about taking care of our women. It's what we were made for.
@@maglor2414 Many? I don't know. Never met one, with the exceptions of my sainted mother and grandmothers, who didn't. But the number of women I have known that well is relatively small, so my experience is limited. It's not always a bad thing. Remember what I said to Harry Sapienn above. The girl got stuff done and I got laid. Win-win, no losers.
4:20 negative reinforcement is the removal of a stimulus. On the other hand, positive punishnent is the addition of a stimulus that will weaken or stop a behavior from reoccurring (i. e., mild shock without tissue damage)
Actually Sheldon got Negative Reinforcement incorrect. Negative Reinforcement is to take away a negative stimulus to promote a certain behavior In this clip he was talking about positive punishment
I had to stop in the middle of watching this to go get myself a piece of chocolate. Stay out of my head, Sheldon! It's late at night and I don't need the extra calories ;-P
PSYCHOLOGY QUESTIONS Who are the three characters in the clip? Sheldon, Penny, and Leonard What does the chocolate represent? Cholate represents positive reinforcement. What is Sheldon trying to accomplish? Sheldon is trying to be “nice” to Penny, but really he is trying to make Penny follow Sheldon’s definition of “correct behavior” like no loud talking, and picking up after him. Which famous psychologists does Sheldon refer to? B. F. Skinner - American psychologist Does Sheldon ever use negative reinforcement in the clip? No, negative reinforcement is to take away a negative stimulus to promote a certain behavior, but in this clip, Sheldon was talking about positive punishment. Name TWO behaviors Sheldon is able to change by using positive reinforcement? -Loud talking while watching a movie outside, instead of on the couch -Pennys high pitch talking and laughing, like when she says “freaky”
Nicole Bonnett I won't lie, it works quite easily even if you're not a nerd like Sheldon who probably has a 30 page labelled plan for it on his laptop.
This actually works in more nuanced, everyday circumstances. Just let people know when they do something positive or negative and reinforce both with rewards or punitive measures.
I wish my Psychology lecturers had let us do an assignment on this I liked his use of positive reinforcement and how the show made it funny and a great simple example 😂
I had to watch this in science today to 'learn' about how we can train behaviour into humans with rewards and to discuss whether rewards or punishments worked better.
