Shelter is an impact absorption medium that is used to protect a bicycle frame from damage. To learn more about Shelter, or to view the math behind the energy to force conversions, visit our website www.cantitoeroa...
We put Shelter to the test by smashing a fluorescent light with a hammer and then using Shelter to protect a fluorescent light while smashing it with the hammer again. Shelter is 50 layers of a visco-elastomeric material-like a memory foam that absorbs energy before it gets through to the frame.

Couple of thoughts: 1 Whatever the bulb is mounted to seems to be moving on impact and this will affect results 2. Why don't you show the test on an actual piece on aluminum or carbon fiber tubing? Just drop a weight, like say um...a spherical rock (a billiard ball would probably work great). I cannot understand why you would demo your product with a light bulb when you could easily do it with materials which more closely match reality.

MarzNet256 A billiards's ball on a carbon frame would be interesting. Once the Shelter was on it, the frame would become very difficult to break. We would have to find a way to shoot the billiards ball at the frame, which does sound like fun. The next time we have a little extra time we might have to look into it.

this is quite the clever product, but you may want to point out that it will deflect forces far better than it will absorb them due to it's platelet type nature and most impacts to a bike frame are glancing blows, not straight on hammer hits this product also looks like it may be excellent for protecting high tension carbon springs, that also fail due to micro-fractures and chips you guys may want to affiliate yourselves with the bocking community as-well as the cycling one

Isn't this just urethane film? You can get a 12' x 4" roll of this for a lot cheaper. Just Google Shop "urethane film helicopter".

We're not scientists. Our purpose in creating this video was to create a dramatic illustration of how Shelter diminishes the force of impacts. For video, blowing things up is more dramatic than a more scientific detail showing digital read-outs. In any case, we think the video makes the point - Shelter diminishes the force of impacts.

The purpose of this video is to demonstrate the efficacy of Shelter in diminishing impacts. Whether the values are newtons or joules really doesn't matter for this video. Out purpose was only to show that Shelter absorbs impact and protects the bulb against some pretty hard blows.

No, Shelter is not the same as helicopter tape. Helicopter tape is designed to protect the blades from abrasion whereas Shelter is designed to absorb impacts. Further, it is specifically designed to function in the range of impacts that are likely to occur from stones kicked-up against the down tube. Helicopter tape will protect against scratches, but the force of the blow is transmitted directly to the tube; Shelter absorbs the force of the blows. That's what this video shows.

@FirewallAndFlush Bocking, eh? That sport was new to me. I checked a couple of RU-vid videos. Looks pretty cool. Thanks for the lead. Agreed most blows to the bike are glancing blows. The hammer v. fluorescent bulb wasn’t supposed to replicate the real world situation. Rather, it was just a dramatic way to show the ability of Shelter to dissipate impact. (Explosions typically command more attention than digital read-outs.)

In fact, if you look closely at the video, you can see that we did put Shelter behind the bulb to protect it from breaking against the fixture. The purpose of this video is to demonstrate that Shelter dramatically reduces the transmitted force of impacts, and we think this video shows that it does. We appreciate the time you took to watch the video and hope you'll give Shelter a try. Let's let us know what you think.

road or mtn? If mtn, it's great, easy, protection (and it'll silence the noise of chain slap in addition to protecting your chain stay). If road, it's not so critical, but it's cheap insurance, compared to the cost of the frame, and it'll silence chain slap.

Yes. You're right. Doing it inside was a mistake. Blowing things up is dramatic, but if we were to do it again, we'd do it outside with considerably more protection than we used in the video shown. (We were stupid, but lucky.)

@NWforager Starting at 2 minutes into the video you will be able to see the shelter that's been folded up and insterted between the bulb and the fixture. No bubble wrap was harmed in the filiming of this video.

Actually, we've considered offering a die-cut kit specifically made for florescent bulbs. Are you interested in protecting 24" or 48" bulbs? How many bulbs to you have?

You're right. We foolishly neglected to consider containment of both mercury release and shattering glass. We don't recommend that anyone try to replicate this demonstration without first providing for containment. Thanks for pointing this out.

Maybe if you repeat the test and put two stripes of Shelter Pack (one in front and one behind) the bulb will last longer. The hammer didn't broke the bulb, just pushed it to the base with it's unprotected side, and that's why it's shattered.

This is a cool video. Informative, and somewhat convincing. Glad you guys took the initiative to do this demonstration. But. If you could use a force or energy meter or some sort of impact reader (which I'm sure there are some out there) and use it with the Shelter film on it with the hammer drop test with the same degree increment as a comparison, the viewer would have a better idea of the force/energy impact absorbed by the film. good demo vid but If you can get more scientific it will sell.

I didn't get a chance to try this tape - I live in Japan and when I contacted the Company to buy some Alberto De Gioannini replied and said he was unable to assist me with my purchase he then recommended that I go and buy some sellotape, one has to seriously wonder is this company and its products trustworthy.

OK, that settles it. I'm getting one of these for each of my fluorescent bulbs. (Ok, and for my carbon fiber frame, too)
