Take a look behind the scenes of the shelter medical team at Cat Care Society. See how our unique approach to shelter medicine gives cats a chance who often wouldn't have one elsewhere. Hear directly from lead veterinarian Dr. Cecily Palamara and veterinary services manager Crystal Hoelter about why we say yes to so many cats, including those with significant medical conditions and needs, and how we set them up for a happy and loving adoptive home.

I adopted a Siamese kitty. Turned out that she was diabetic, needed dental work and had food allergies. Took me about 1.5 years to dig through her health problems. We caught her diabetes early. She got lucky; changing her diet to a wet food, very low carbohydrate, species appropriate diet worked. Like a lot of Siamese kitties, she is fussy about food. She has multiple food allergies. Fast forward 13 years, she is 17 years old, in really good health. Her vet thinks she might join the 20 year old club. I've had cats that have made it beyond 20. I spent several thousand dollars, many trips to the vet and hiring an out-of-state consultant vet (from the vet school my vet graduated from) in order to restore my Siamese girl to good health. I know many good, responsible cat guardians who wouldn't have been able to do what I did. What you're doing gives potential adopters piece of mind... reduces the chance they adopt a cat that appears to be in decent health, but isn't. Purrs are valuable. Right now, I don't need a cat (another cat equals lease violation). I wish there was an organization like yours nearer to me, because when the time comes that I need a cat, I would pay extra to adopt from an organization that is as thorough as yours is.

I had a cat who was diagnosed with pancreatitis. She later passed away, and the vet may have misdiagnosed her. I also had a diabetic cat and she hated her shots. She'd always get it with her breakfast and Mom or I would put it in her hip. She'd always look at us and then go to the other side to finish her food.
