There is a fourth suttle instance of betrayal. When Task Force 141 raid the Gulag to rescue Price The Navy (under orders of Shepard) were dropping danger close ordinance. Then after the prisoner is confirmed to be price, navy ships starts bombarding the facility with 141 still inside.

It’s not that we didn’t pay attention to it. It’s that it’s literally never addressed or mentioned ever again. There’s also a fighter jump jet that takes off from the house and plane crash as you get there. But no one ever mentioned it or shot at it.

It was going to get mentioned again. Shepherd talked about that case being the most important thing in these events in alpha version. That scene was going to connect MW2 and MW3 but Infinity Ward development team changed.

I feel like Viktor being killed started the rift between the two, but when Shepherd betrayed TF141, he also betrayed Makarov. Once Him and Shadow Company killed Makarov and his mercenaries and 141, he would return to the United States to push Russia out of the U.S. and lead the charge to take back Europe.

I don't think Viktor's death had much to do with Makarov willingly giving intel to Price. Viktor was just another pawn for Shepherd but Makarov was the biggest pawn of them all. Makarov knew that TF141 was betrayed by Shepherd in Afghanistan and he had to do something to get rid of Shepherd and his men since they were a more immediate threat than the last of TF141. Hence Makarov shared his intel to buy himself time to plot his moves taking place in MW3.

Given what Shephard wanted I'm only left half-surprised by this betrayal. Shephard wanted to be a war hero. Can't be a war hero with a war, so he sold out the HVI in order to keep the war going until he was ready to claim victory after disposing of TF141.

@hippycracktalksmack ehhhh it had it flaws. Not bad necessarily but mw2 was absolutely Cinema art from the gameplay, to the story, to the soundtrack produced by Hans zimmer himself. No Call of duty, not even bo1 and 2, which were really good comes close to mw2 to this date.

If I remember correctly, Shepherd didn't give the order to bomb the Gulag. It was the Navy just starting early and Shepherd was trying to buy them time. Shepherd needed TF141 alive for his plans.

Shepherd specifically says the Navy "isn't in a listening mood." Infinity Ward has at best a foggy understanding of how chains of command work (which is why Shepherd was in charge of Marines despite being Army), but I guess even they understands Army Generals don't get put in command of Naval warships. Shepherd likely made a recommendation the Navy cool it, and the Navy politely recommended that he fuck off.

I don't think Shepherd and Makarov were working together as friends. Shepherd's "mistakes" to faciliate the war were for his own personal gains. He was using Makarov as a pawn from start to end.

To throw a wrench into the theory, US comms aren't as secure as they can be, and Makarovs guys are pretty damn good at their job. They could have hacked comms to figure out what the US forces were planning and overheard the challenge and countersign. Regular Russian forces were already in the house, it makes sense that special forces would be as well for an HVT. My theory on why this could be, is because there is fresh blood on the ground, and IIRC when you shoot any of the body's they still spray blood as though they were recently deceased.

Shepherd betrays his men a 4th time later on in the game. In "Just Like Old Times" Price and Soap fight their way through the bunker and make it outside of the room rigged with explosives. Shepherd notices that his booby trap failed to yield the results he intended, in light of this he orders what seems to be a nearby artillery unit to hit the area he believes Price and Soap to be. When the barrage comes down, it blows up an encampment area where a substantial amount of Shadow Company operators are set up. Price and Soap are untouched by the strike, but most of the Shadow guys in the area are killed or wounded. If we were to count every event like this you could list almost every mission in MW2 as a betrayal by Shepherd, so make of it what you will.

Maybe both Viktor and that Russian Solider you find at the fridge downstairs was leading a attack on the house. So im guessing Shepherd told Viktor about the H.V.I and where he was to take him out and when both Viktor and a random Russian Solider went upstairs the H.V.I saw them and shot Viktor killing him but the other Solider shot and killed the H.V.I

when i played the mission that scene did seem off... i didn't know it was victor from the no Russians mission i never paid attention to that...i guess it makes sense because after that mission i dont think shepard commands the army regiment after that and goes back with 141...after knowing that the HVI was killed he was able to "tie up another loose end"

I thought the main reason why they knew the coded message is that because of the ACS module held by the Russians. But this makes sense when it was mentioned that SOSUS and Pave Paws was disabled so there's no way they could breach the intelligence. So there must be someone that told them that

You know what's an interesting detail; As you approach the HVI's house you see two American aircraft take off from the hill behind the house and fly off. Those aircraft couldn't have landed there while the Russian AA gun was set up, so maybe Makarov's men and/or Shadow Company landed there to kill the HVI, saw that the Russian army had set up an AA position nearby, and asked Shephard to have the Rangers clear out the AA position so they could get away. The intro cutscene for this mission uses the Shadow Company theme and it's the only mission to do so where they don't appear.

Glenn Morshower is hella popular. He’s Gen. Morshower in Transformers, the voice actor for overlord in of mw2, and voice actor of Gen shepherd in mw3 2023.

Shepherd betrayal just didn’t hit as hard in reboot MW22, I think part of the reason is because I know what’s gonna happen cuz of og, but at the same time it wasn’t actually shepherd who did the betrayal but ordered graves to betray tf141, they made shepherd less badass in the reboot

Makarov was always alert and couldn't even be fooled by Shepherd when he sent Alexei Borodin 0:56 AC-130 Gunship down by Anti-Air craft 2:15 Makarov's work was very dirty, even his own team was killed to get another team In essence, Shepherd wants to be a War Hero as said by Capt. Price and Makarov become his enemies

I actually had been stumped on the details behind this part of the story, because it wasn't really picked up before nor after the mission. I didn't look into any lore or info about this pert of the mission myself, but I always tried to piece it together whenever I played. I was confused as to how they managed to execute the HVI without leaving signs of forced entry. It didn't occur to me that Makarov's operatives might have known the Challenge phrase as well. This makes a lot of sense now. I would still like to know what exactly the HVI was carrying.

For Pvt. Allen he didnt get betrayed by Shepherd. He actually got accidentally exposed by Yuri (from a flashback in OG MW3 Story). Bc Yuri didnt like what Makorov was doing during the events of MW2 so he tried contacting the US but got figured out by Makorov. And since he found out Pvt. Allen is an American and undercover he played along with it until the end of the mission, killing Allen. Making his plan easier to start a war and also cucking Shepherd. Bc Shepherd is trying to make himself look like a hero. While Makorov is trying to make Modern Russia revert it back into Soviet Russia Influence. So it wouldnt make sense why they would work together?

Old School Shepard character had great writing compared to new Shepard was a disappointment. Old School Shepard had reasons to turn against his own government because the Government turned on him first just for Shepard to lose all his men was sad. I don't blame him for his actions, but new Shepard made no sense and his characters development was all over the place. The only thing I won't forgive Old School Shepard for killing Roach and Ghost hit me hard.
