The Case of the Golden Idol Part 4 - things are heating up. The cult isn't just going to sit around and do nothing, they're doing to do cult things, like murder. It's up to me and me to figure out the mystery behind all of this, the best detective duo since Holmes and Watson.

Pretty sure it was not a recovery time that prevented MacBain from flying, it was the fact that Lazarus used the idol while it had a red gem, and that made it blue. Blue requires you to swap glyphs to use, and even if MacBain had known that, it ALSO reverses the effect meaning he WOULD have been sucked towards the ground even faster if he had swapped it. Since it was blue and he used the increase glyph it did nothing however.

Spoilers for how the idol works below: the idol abides by the rules of equal exchange/thermodynamics. in order to use the spontaneous combustion spell (increasing heat in an object) one first needs to "absorb" heat from somewhere, hence the use of the "freezing" spell. the idol's eye colour changes to indicate whether or not it's "absorbed" anything. so the freezing spell absorbs heat and causes the eye to turn blue (idol is full of heat), but when that heat is expended through the spontaneous combustion spell, the eye returns to the red colour (idol is empty). the idol's ability to expel mater is used by Lazarus during the light house scene to perform his "flight" miracle (the jet of air functioning as a source of lift), however, to perform the "flight" spell, a large quantity of air would have needed to be absorbed beforehand with a "vacuum" spell. Angus McBain was only aware of the "flight" spell input from blackmailing Walter Keene and therefore didn't vacuum any air beforehand, causing the idol to not function at all when his turn came to perform the flight miracle

Everyone in Case IV was invited to the event for the sole purpose of double-framing Leopold Blanchard. - Leopold Blanchard and Augustus Vallantine had beef before, as demonstrated by the note referring to the "shouting match" that had happened, this would give him a motive to kill Augustus. - Ergin Ptoo was invited because of his well known animosity, in order to make it seem like Leopold intended to frame him by using the Boomerang as the weapon. - Gideon Bell was invited to keep Ergin Ptoo busy as he was most likely going to be very interested in him (given what was mentioned in the letter he holds). The fact that Ergin poisoned Gideon and stole the Lemurian Seal was mere coincidence (a red herring for solving the case). If it hadn't happened, the the framing of Ergin by Leopold would've been even more easily disproven.

Kind of wanna say the reason they switched so Agustus koch did the killing is because he has military training and I guess one could say James Turing may have a sharper tongue and knows more about drugs and stuff do to being a doctor hence why he did the drugging, just as a fyiy

@@link7417 Yes, but also it means that Alistair was never seen near Leopold, and James was never seen leaving the chess house. That way, there's no direct connection to both the button and the murder location for either of them. Obviously, both servants had been told to be in very specific locations, which was only confused somewhat by the butler drinking sherry right from the bottle when told to pour it out because it had gone bad. And they knew where Leopold and Augustus would be, the note Augustus had wasn't signed so they would have sent the apology and request to talk at noon. That only left Gideon and Ergin, who were supposed to have been together in the tea-house where James could have seen either of them approaching and stopping them to "talk" so that they don't interrupt the murder happening. Hardly a perfect crime as they missed Ergin entering the salon earlier, and Gideon still attested to Augustus leaving the chess house briefly, but… you know… cultists.

Apart from what Sylfa mentions about making sure that no one can establish a firm connection between them and the house at the time of the murder, Leopold and Alistair are both veterans. Augustus is much larger and possibly a bit taller than Dr. Turner, and the point of the assassination is not only to get both Leopold _and_ Augustus permanently out of the way, but to prevent their respective parties from forming a coalition against the Order Party backed by Turner and Alistair's Brotherhood. The assassins need to ensure a _major_ inter-party scandal, and a violent, face-to-face attack in cold blood under false pretenses of peacemaking means stronger and longer-lasting guaranteed outrage than mere poison. Alistair has both the will and ability to kill another man violently.

@@link7417 the reason AK did it was because he was in the military *and* they were at JT's house. JT had access to the brandy to drug people inconspicuously, had control of the servants and the investigation. Someone else had to be the killer or it would've been too obvious. It could've been any other member of the brotherhood to do the deed, but AK makes the most sense because he has the most experience killing people.

I suspect that the coincidence in Chapter 9 is there specifically to have Ptoo be a red herring. Based on the murder weapon and Ptoo’s need for justice during the visit, you would guess he would be a part of it (which is what happened to you in the video). It’s very likely his pocketing of the Lemurian Seal is because it (like the other seals and Lemurian items) was stolen from his country years ago by the Country he is visiting (or at the very least the host of this get-together). And his taking the seal is some sort of justice.

Specifically, it seems likely that the seal is the Ptoo clan seal, since they refer to them as the seals of the Lemurian clan, which Ptoo obviously is.

Also, if you decipher the lemurian numeral system of the seales, you see that he stole the seal of his own clan, regaining their honor.

@@LuxinNocte Indeed, it's a neat detail that you can decipher the number system, even though the pictogram for 7 doesn't fit in so well. Should have been 3 axes rather than arrows, or the leaves/butterflies. But it's still a nice touch.

@@Sylfa It's even more neat that the golden idol uses those symbols. That's why the symbols for 'air' and gold are what they are. Two squares for 'air' means 8. Two triangles on the left separate from a triangle and square on the right means 67. But because it's base 12, we need to convert to base 10 to actually understand those numbers. You get 8 (unchanged because it's a 'single digit') and 79 (6*12 + 7). The atomic numbers of oxygen and gold respectively!

28:42 - It wasn't revenge to steal the seal, the seal was his clans to begin with and the 7 seas company stole it from them originally. In short, he accepted the invite just so he could get an opportunity to recover their clans seal. Revenge was never part of it at all. The reason they had two people perform the murder was so that James could steal the button and drug Leopold. Then he passes the button to Alistair outside, who then went inside to perform the murder without ever being seen near Leopold. That way neither of them have been seen both near Leopold and the salon, implying Leopold must have pretended to sleep and lost his button during the murder without noticing. The butler, of course, drank of the drugged sherry straight from the bottle, which is why the bottle is on the floor, and why the butler "fainted." James of course could arrange for both gardener and butler to be in the correct locations so that they would be witnesses to the movement of people, which is why the butler was to go and help in the garden instead of any normal butler tasks, so they both were out of the way by the flowers for the murder to take place. It's hardly the perfect crime though, but even if Ergin had just been a regular guest it wouldn't have changed the scene much, just given less red herrings. But what do you expect from cultists?

the thing with ergin stealing the seal was a coincidence, but not one that actually affected the plan. gideon spotted alistair going to kill the guy despite being drugged, and ergin was back at the teahouse by that point. as for why one guy stole the button and a different guy did the murder, i'd personally not want to be doing all the work when i have a co-conspirator

It also ensures that Alistair was never seen near Leopold, so there's not a direct connection of how the button went from Leopold to the victim. Presumably Alistair and James aren't known to be friends and only know each other through the cult, making it less likely to the constable that they were in it together.

Might also be so there's no suspicion on them from the other parties. The murder weapon was a traditional weapon from the prince's country. Tyler himself got tricked thinking "it's either the eye patch guy or the prince". The victim's party will blame the eye patch dude, while the other party obviously will believe the dude and have suspicion on the prince.

Oh he made for a great target for Leopold to fixate about, but I doubt James even considered that Ergin would want to reclaim his clans seal. That would just have Ergin and Gideon free to wander instead of keeping them occupied.

22:41 - early read on the mystery (in other words, I'm posting this before watching the rest of the video): the chess game was faked. It's hard to see what's going on because the image is small, but that is a position that is impossible to achieve. Not only is the light square not in the right-hand corner for both players like it's supposed to be, but white has 2 bishops on dark squares while black had 2 bishops on light squares and a pawn in the corner of the board.

No. "Mister" is a variant of "Master", just like "Missus" is a variant of "Mistress". "Master" and "Mistress" are terms of respect. Respectable men of any age are "Master". Arthur Falkner refers to Gideon Bell as "young Master" because Gideon is young, but also richer and higher class than he is.

Allistair Koch and James Turner did not need the coincidence. Their idea was to frame Leopold and since no one knew that they were working together, no one should suspect that James (who had an alibi during the murder) or Allistair (who did not get close to Leopold and couldn't have taken his button) would be the murderer. Their plan was sufficient, but Ergin interfering with it made things even more complicated to figure out

It's never stated, but it's a sign of membership in the cult. Every person we've seen with one has been a cult member, and when Lazarus Herst was undergoing his trial of initiation, in addition to the brands he was going to receive, the cult member also had a second ring to give him.

Like @Lazarus178 said, red ring = cult remember. I think that's one of the major clue's pointing to a co-consiprator that Tyler missed. He's the only other person at the party in the cult and we know that the cult set up the party to remove the two opposition leaders so it would make sense that he's in on whatever the plan was.
