"Sadness is a tender pain that cannot be forgotten"(quote Andre Gide) On April 24, 1984, the premiere of the first episode of "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" with Jeremy Brett took place. I dedicate my video to the 40th anniversary of the release of the first episode of this wonderful series. This video used mostly images of Jeremy - Sherlock Holmes from the final episodes of the serial. I did this because these photos are quite rarely used. These photographs evoke a special, tender and aching sadness in me. "Tears of sadness are sea water that cleanses our souls and brings new waves of feelings"(Immanuel Kant) In the depths of sadness we see a reflection of our immortality. I think the biggest sadness of my life is the fact that I will never be able to tell Jeremy Brett how much I love him as a person and how petfect he was as Sherlock Holmes.Watching him play is not the same as watching anyone else play at all. It was like I was looking at Sherlock Holmes, real and live. It saddens me to think that he died 29 years ago. At that time I didn't know him yet and had nevet heard of the wonderful TV series 'Granada". I misd him, althought I have never seen him. When he was alive, I was too young and had never heard of him. Jeremy looks a bit like a star, one of those suns we see in the night sky. They shine so brightly from millions of light years away, they have already disappeared, but they still shine brighter than ever. But I believe be is in a better world now. Having joy and love and looking at us with a gentle smile, he is happy to know that there are people who like his work ❤❤❤❤❤

I can remember several years ago, reading the RU-vid comments under an NPR Radio audio interview with Jeremy Brett recorded in 1994. In this comment the woman stated that when she finally leaves this realm she would love to converse with Mr. Brett.

Dear Dear Dear Ksenia ! Thinking of publishing a video on the anniversary of the premiere of the Granada series is a new manifestation of your delicacy of heart and feelings. Really : WHO, if not YOU would have, not only remembered it, but DONE something for this occasion ? For the time being, I just want to say that I really feel like re-watching your vid right now but I prefer to shelve this refined pleasure to a later moment in the day (?). My comments on it might come at this time. I will say more about your quote by Gide but, meanwhile, I've found this one that I find relevant to submit to you : "L'important, c'est être capable d'émotions ; mais n'éprouver que les siennes, c'est une triste limitation". = "The important thing is to be capable of emotions ; but only experiencing his own ones, it's a sad limitation" Maybe I'm distorting the meaning of Gide's thought but, as I see it, it's what you seem to have understood and I think we're truly blessed to have you : not keeping your precious feelings, impressions and understanding of life for yourself but, instead, being smart and generous enough to share them with us all ! 🙏💕

Dear Charlotte, thank you. Your comments are special. 40 years since the release of the first episode of Sherlock Holmes with Jeremy Brett, this is a grand event for all true Sherlockians. This can be repeated a thousand times, but it's true: after Jeremy, it's impossible to play the role of a brilliant detective better. I want to express special gratitude to you for being an attentive viewer of my works. You subtly feel all the emotions and sensations that I try to put into my videos. In this video I wanted to talk specifically about sadness. In the last episodes of the series, Sherlock Holmes - Jeremy has an unusually sad look. Yes, Sherlock Holmes (Jeremy) has changed in appearance due to a serious illness. A lot of wise sadness appeared in his eyes. I try to share my impression with the viewer, because I can't do otherwise.

I would like to share my astonishment (mixed with a touch of wonder) : I can't count how many times you gave a quote by a French author in your introductions. Is it because the school system gives an important space to foreign literatures (which the French one regrettably doesn't do), or because your own curiosity incites you to read foreign writers, or is it simply the result of an interest for literary quotes from your part (I understand that : as far as I'm concerned, I'm very curious about proverbs from all over the world) ? This time I really would like to know from what book by Gide and from what work by Kant the quotes about sadness are drawn : I made a little research in English and French ... with no result. My knowledge of these authors is very poor. Indeed, I only read one book by Gide : "Si le grain ne meurt" (= "Unless the grain dies" after St John's Gospel, translated in English into "If it dies"). It was a mandatory reading which didn't reach its objective (?) to generate a wish in us / me to go further into his work, out of school, for my own education and human formation... As to Kant... France being (as far as I know) the only country in the world* where philosophy is a compulsory subject during the last year ("classe de Terminale") of high school ("lycée"), aged 17-18 I had to read excerpts from "Die Kritik der reinen Vernunft". Our teacher was nothing of a pedagog (37 years later, alas, I still see this as an indulgent judgment...). The result ? "Eine Kolossale Katastrophe !" : as much as I am still interested in discovering any philosopher, when it comes to Kant, is a steadfast "NO : that, I... CAN'T" What a lamentable (almost reproachable in my eyes) waste of a unique offer* ! May I take advantage of all this to make a request ? In the future, could you add the source of the quotes you insert in your texts (when it's doable) ? It may sound like a too demanding asking (from a former librarian, must be said, as a very weak excuse), but in fact, it's based on a brand fresh experience : your quote of Gide totally renewed my views on him. Indeed, doing the research I mention above, I was able to read not only sentences but paragraphs from various books of his, and my quasi non recollection of my only reading changed into a wish (almost a need) do a true step into his work because, after that, it seems necessary to me to take it seriously and do justice to it for Gide's considerations and the way he expresses subtle feelings appears very inspiring and his work worthy of another examination (beginning to do it in my mature years might be a more beneficial thing, after all). So, please don't take my request for a child's whim, but rather understand it as a admirative compliment and an heartfelt "thank you" : I would never have expected that a newly made Foreign friend, and non a French speaking one, would take me by the hand and lead me back into unexplored areas of "my own", "national" (4 pairs of "..." ☝️) writers' work ! Dear Ksenia, by sometimes sprinkling your texts with such quotes, you reach the goal my French teachers not always succeeded in achieving ! It's one more, discreet, a bit amusing (because likely not fundamental in your uploads) and very appreciable enjoyments I find in your "little" video deliveries. Merci, infiniment !

Dear Charlotte, excuse me for starting my answer with a quote from Andre Gide from the Diary: " What I hate most is garbled quotes. This way you can force the writer to say anything". Of course, this is my interlinear translation from Russian into English. It may sound different in French, but the meanings is preserved. I don't know exactly from which work the phrase "Sadness is a tender pain..." was taken. I think only his biographers know about this. This year on November 22 will mark the 155th anniversary of his birth. If under a quote there is an explanation of which work it was taken from, I always write the name of thevbook. I think it is impossible to know by heart all the quotes you like. That's why I use Quotation Book from the Internet. The same applies to the quote from Immanuel Kant. I have not read his works, but I know that he is an outstanding german philosopher. April 22 marked the 300 th anniversary of his birth. "Sadness is a candle that illuminates our soul in dark moments" - Igor Severyanin(1887 - 1941) Russian poet. In Russian this quote goes like this: " Грусть - это свеча, которая освещает нашу душу в темные моменты". Please forgive me if I was unable to answef your questions. Thanks for your interesting comment!
