Got my Curado DC today. Spooled it up with 10lb mono and tried a variety of lures and weights. Adjusted the spool tension as per Shimano and used the #2 setting. Had a few overruns but nothing major and was getting great distance. Incrementally tightened the spool tension knob and this took care of most of the tangles with little loss of distance. I believe the key to this reel, as others have suggested, is to leave about 1/8” from the edge of the spool and not go almost all the way as Shimano states in the owners manual. After doing this I repeated all my casts with the same lures and had no feathering during mid-cast like I was getting before.

I love my Curardo DC. I predominately use 20kg braid and 7.5kg mono so it lives in setting "2" most of the time. If its blowing a gale I use setting "4." I chuck lures from 15g to 50g grams no problem and if im on a narrow water (river for example) ive "lobbed" lures up to the Rapala Peto which is 80g. For me its great as I came to a baitcasting setup pretty late, as they aren't so popular this side of the pond, though their use is growing fast. Used it here in UK, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Spain, Serbia and Macedonia. Some of the best money ive ever spent (bearing in mind its a $302 real over here) It help an average angler like me catch a boatful of fish. Mainly Pike but also a 121lb Wels Catfish that took my lure on River Ebro. Yep, love it.

Spool tension is to loose!!!

The external dial number 2 is for mono/braid while external dial number 3 is for flouro if I'm not wrong

Hey man I have had the DC for over a week now. It’s the spool tension I know it says to eliminate side to side play. But u really really have to eliminate it. I know it says too tight will with hold breaks abilities but it still bombs. U need just a touch more on tension knob and reel will blow your mind

I got to play with one rigged on a 7ft mh mod fast rod with 14-16lb mono on it and and was able to skip it on the concrete as hard as I could with a 1/2oz rubber plug without thumbing it. And into the wind atleast 50 yards. But didn't have to try very hard to get it to flair up / over run. I think it's l e of those reels that needs to be adjusted with every different line and lure on it. But it's the first dc I've held and threw so I liked it. I don't have any shimanos at this point but have decided on the curado k or dc since they finally stepped up the curado to match the price. Great videos man!

Ive never in my life seen people cast bait casters with out total thumb control

I know with my scorpion dc, i usually do 2-3 quarter effort casts to let the dc to get used to the weight of the lure weight then I don’t have too many problems after that as far as overruns

Idk why you were having so many backlashes, tested mine today and I threw on all settings, never had a backlash, just some fluff at the start or middle of my cast on dial setting “1”. Maybe your reel was over lubed?

I'll take the K over the DC cause I know how to set up and adjust a reel properly. Plus, its $80 cheaper.

good job on the video. Would of loved to see you cast into 10-15mph winds. The older DC I used didn't really give me much more distance but it did help casting into the wind to minimize over runs. The subtle whining does not bother me, what bothers me is the plastic squeak on the curado K thumbar... hope the DC is a slightly different. Still on the fence with this one after your video.

This video did A perfect job with the actual noise you hear. Others put mics right there making it seem order on video than it really is. It's not super loud you have to almost be looking for that metallic zing.

I think the problem with casting the 1/4 ounce lure has more to do with the rod's stiffness (MH) rather than anything to do with the reel.

The lower number is not for less breaking, it is an arbitrary number in relation to a line type.

I'm pretty sure that the second settin is for mono/braid that's why it's doing better than the 3 settin witch is for fluro

I am very confused. First of all, you used the wrong settings as in "1" for your mono line, then you admitted that in hindsight, you should have used "2". So, my question is, are your findings still valid then? In other words, is the spool control still as bad as you said it is in your opinion? I guess we will never know unless you redo it with setting "2"? Because if I am going to go by this clip, what you are in fact saying is the Curado DC kind of sucks? As for the price point, as you know I also raised that before. If you yourself buy a lot of reels from Japan (meaning with no warranty), then why would you look at the Scorpion DC and say well if Shimano were to bring it over it would have cost this and that? Is very simple, if you think the Scorpion DC is better and it only costs $260 from Japan (with free shipping may I add), i.e. only $10 more the Curado DC, you personally would opt for the Scorpion DC right (hypothetically speaking since you already have the Scorpion DC)? Alright, I am going to throw another spanner into the works. In Asia, the Curado DC only costs $183 (essentially the price of a Curado K) may be perhaps they already have the Scorpion DC with the more advanced I-DC5 system selling at $260, needless to say they can't sell the Curado DC at $250 obviously when it has supposedly an inferior older DC system. So, here is my question, if it were you, would you buy a Curado DC at $183 from Asia or a Scorpion DC at $260 also from Asia? LOL. That is what I really wanted to find out in the first place to get your take on it. I was hoping if the Curado DC ain't at all bad, I would be happy just to settle for the Curado DC instead of forking out more for the Scorpion DC.

If the number 2 setting is for braid mono as you mentioned, wouldn't make sense that it casts the mon better on 2 than 3?

awesome video. even with a 1/4 ounce lure still goes far. this testing video really helps too btw compared to the METANIUM DC cast tests, the settings on the curados far more 'general' but still i guess some cant complain with the help of the dc but i guess it just comes with practice non stop. still casts out a long way though

I think the svs brakes are just to good and can match the dc reels besides a few of the dc models in certain situations. But that is just my theory. Good vid tho

A lot depends on the quality of the cast (better release of the bait from the rod) whether the spool will overrun or not. The faster the bait is moving out of the reel will help prevent overrun.

Fluro and mono come off the spool differently. That's why it overran in 3 and not 2. 3 is for fluro as you said, and 2 is for mono. The mono likes to "jump" off the spool instead of "peel" off. So does fluro but not as much. The spool is sped up to compensate for it in setting 2.

I honestly would ask you to try another Curado DC reel. Mine whines much louder as well as no overruns. My performance didn't match yours at all so it's really interesting. I might be running the tensioner heavier? I don't know. I bring it down until the spool doesn't move left to right at all, then I might go even a quarter to half turn more. I'm always on setting 2, but then again I'm also running braid which acts differently coming off the spool when compared to Mono. I'm sure my casts are shorter though so I guess that's the trade-off.

Sounds like most people are more concerned with sound rather than functionality. Talked to someone on the lake with the curado dc and the first thing he said was listen to this thing lol then he said it still will backlash though..

I took mine out for the first time yesterday. The cast control setup was really fussy. Following the directions and removing side-to-side play left me with overruns unless I was in mode 4. Tightening up enough so I could cast without major overruns in mode 1 I tested the casting distance against my old Favorite a Gen2 Revo SX that is my jerkbait setup. Both rods had 10# flouro and the exact same 4" XPS jerkbait. The Revo beat it by 15 feet. In the end I like the DC for close to medium use like weighless worms or jigs, but for casting distance on striper boils it's not my go-to.

I wish there was an easy way to tell if I'm actually getting the use of the DC part of this reel. Loosening and tightening and loosening the spool tension is exactly what I was doing with my non DC reels. How do I know I'm getting the advantage of the digital chip? I have about 100 yards of 30# Braid on it.

The curado dc sounds like a the older metanium mg dc it has four brake sittings too. They sound similar I have and older metanium dc

Brake 4 is no back lash, 3 is Fluorocarbon, 2 is braid and mono and 1 is far cast and son it cast

pretty happy with my scorpion DC. cant lie, i have been curious about the curado DC, but it was pretty apparent from all the hype videos, that there was a bit of fuckery going on. i will be in the market for another reel soon, and most likely ill be getting a 2nd scorpion. tried the metanium DC, and i didnt feel it was a significant enough improvement over the scorpion to warrant the extra $200 or so. dont understand why shimano didnt just put on the DC I-5 or just sell the scorpion in the US instead.the curado brakes just seem to be a super dumbed down version of its base level DC brakes. but then again, shimano is one of those goofy companies with its hand in thousands of different areas and getting into the mind of their R&D would drive most people to rather eat glass.

For the price I would for sure take the Scorpion DC. The Scorpion DC sounds better and cast lures 1/4-1/2 for sure better than Curado DC based off your video. I throw 1/8-1oz lures on Scorpion DC with no backlash, and with ease. I would like for you to prove to your viewers which DC is worth buying. Curado DC vs Scorpion DC.

Definitely to much line on the spool. Hope your not using 10 dollar cheap line on a 250 reel. But good video.

The new Excense DC is quite silent as well. I prefer like that. The older one was horrible. Loud and I had the brake system fail pretty early. And know of others that had the same problem. Changing subject, what snap do you use? I`ve used fastach from Mustad and lost some nice lures. I will still use it for soft plastics. But no way for hard baits. So, for hard baits I`m using Owner Hyper Welded size 0. Doing good, but I can`t find where to buy in a decent price and the smaller sizes. Yes, in Japan it`s a lot cheaper and they have the size 00 and 000. But the websites won`t ship to US. sad

Did you adjust the tension knob for the lure weight so it falls slowly or just so there's no play like the instructions say? I adjusted it so the spool has no play and it perform pretty good but I still got minor backlashes from time to time and did thumb my casts. I know it's cool with videos showing people not thumbing but I think people should know you still need to thumb this reel. It just makes life easier and when it does backlash it's much more minimal.

Try doing a Magnetic braking Vs Centrifigal braking video. Light lures (1/4 oz) and heavy lures (1/2 oz). This will sort o0ut some of the reels.

Most of the backlash is from not having the cast control knob set correctly.

Are you saying that the curado dc reel settings should be from 1 be the lowest control to 4 being the most control? That's why you think the 2 and 3 settings are backward?

I have never heard of the settings on the left side of a right hand reel like in the case of the DC they are 1-4 and certain numbers are designated for a specific type of line??? You just adjust any reel to the line and lure weight you are going to throw. Both with mono and fluorocarbon lines some are soft and cast well some are stiffer and curl more. It all depends on what you are using and going to throw as to how exactly you set up both knobs on your reel.

Brah! Just watched a video on a guy who completely disassemble a Shimano DC reel and their was no electronics or DC or circuit of any kind. I pretty much saw all plastic parts! Kinda pissed about the miss advertising! That DC noise could all be a spring against a gear or plastic gear? Please let us know

You should learn how to cast using your left hand, I use to cast exactly the same way as you. It didn't take long to switch, from what I remember about 2-3 times of fishing. Years later I'm glad I put the effort into switching casting with my left hand, I am deadly accurate now and much more efficient. Anyways I hope you don't my suggestion the wrong way. I do enjoy your videos.

I think the reason why it's quieter could be because of the plastic cover over the dc unit. But I'm not sure as I've never owned a dc reel. Also for the casting part have you tried doing a normal cast instead of trying to chug the whole set up across the lake

I think the DC works better with lures that are 3/8 oz and heavier better than lighter ones. I have the the DC the K and the Daiwa Elite and have tested them all out with various baits.

I’d say if you want more performance go with the scorpion dc considering how much more adjustments it has over the curado dc.

I'm using fluro for weightless flukes jerk baits and cranks and mine doesnt back lass on that setting

This is the ONLY review I’ve seen where the casts have consistently nested. User error? There doesn’t seem to be too much line on the reel. I wonder how often you get backlash on your everyday reels?

The brake setting "2" is meant for the mono, so it's be no means surprising that it overruns on "3".

It's not suit to test with Fluolene type line but P.E. ! I'm think that the Fluolene type line suit to sea fishing .

Try throwing something heavier like a 7/8 or 5/8 oz weight. The older DC casted better with heavier weights. I have a 2003 conquest DC that cast at least 30 yards or more on every cast but on 5/8 oz and up to an 1OZ with no bird nest.
