SLX 70mgl on a 6'10" med light Zodias throws 4" and smaller swimbaits perfectly on 15lb test braid to leader. Already landed a couple 100 smallies and largemouth including catfish and Slab crappies and it's one of my favorite fun combos.
Yea, fantastic reel, I have since switched to the curado BFS for that, but both very capable. I would argue if you wanted one reel to do most bass fishing techniques at the best price then the slx mgl is it, able to power fish or finesse fish!!
@@CasuallyCasting definitely handled 4lb cats and a few 5lb largest and under perfectly fine. Most the times I'm throwing light wire 2/0 hooks anyway so the rod bends more than the reel gives.

About your video, it is all about personal feelings. According to Shimano catalog, Curado is the above category level to SLX with more technologies & Curado is also the well known model for many years but not for SLX. By the way, Curado is smoother than SLX cause it has X-Ship technology which mean there is one more ball bearing support the spool to bring more power & stable work for the reel when having heavy load.
I use my Curado XG 70 size on light crank baits and it can cast them probably better than the Curado K or the DC. I just slow down my retrieve since it is fast for cranks. The light weight makes it perfect for cranking as you don’t feel any fatigue.
agreed, the only other argument I would make against your strategy is the fact that the 70 size spool wont hold much line if you are loading it with flouro, and if your constantly cutting your line and having to re-tie due to abrasion and nicks from shallow rocks and cover then you would have to re-spool far too often. Just food for thought though!!
I have never had a side plate pop off. I know if you have the spool tension set when you open the side plate on the curados then you are unable to close the side plate properly. maybe that was the issue? or do you mean that it actually comes off?
@@CasuallyCasting when I'm not bass fishing I go wading in saltwater for redfish & trout and sometimes I have to open the side plates on my reels to adjust the brakes when I cast against the wind. That's why I prefer the slx cuz the plate stays attached and prevents you from dropping the side plate into the water. I also never had an issue with a side plate coming off on any of my shimano reels.
Thank's for the video Casually Casting. I recently purchased the Curado 70mgl XG but the side plate is stuck and will not come off. I've tried the normal procedure's but I don't want to force the issue and destroy my reel. I'd appreciate any suggestions. Thanks
@@CasuallyCasting Thank's Casually, I got it off with a little wiggling but thank's for the tips on decreasing the tension knob and drag. I didn't know those tricks. This 70 is a sweet reel! I haven't tried it yet but it feels a little smother and smaller in hand than my Curado 150mgl's.
I own the slx dc, I love it, I use it for my lipless rod as I do not want to over run or birds nest and get the lipless so far down in the weeds I can't rip it out without taking a core sample of the bottom. DC really only helps in the wind and if you forget to change your settings for different lures on other reels the DC helps there also That being said I only own one, because I never have any issues, plus I love how much smoother the mgl series is.
You cannot go wrong, the curado mgl is a little smaller in the palm and a tiny bit smoother on the cast, but just the other day, i through a chatterbait on my slx mgl and I couldnt believe how well it casted!
I would say its worth it yes, is it needed maybe not. they are both great, If its going on a rod for a technique that you use often I would say curado, if its a seasonal rod or a occasional use, then the slx. this is just because of smoothness and weight. But both reels are great workhorses and you will love them
