Shimano Dura-Ace R9200 is here and we've got a first ride review! Dura-Ace is Shimano’s flagship, top-tier, best-of-everything racing groupset. In its latest incarnation it's 12 speed, semi wireless and electronic only. You heard that right, mechanical shifting is dead!
As well as an extra sprocket at the back, new 12-speed Dura-Ace features better shifting, better braking and all the smaller refinements and tweaks that you’d expect from Shimano.
Incidentally, at the same time as launching a new racing flagship Shimano is bringing out Ultegra R8100 the second-tier Groupset which Benefits many of the same technologies and as ever with Ultegra is simply a bit cheaper a bit heavier and a little less blingy.
Want to know more about Ultegra R8100? Get the full rundown on both Groupsets here:

Shimano Dura-Ace R9200 is finally here! What are your first impressions? Too heavy? Sad to see no mechanical version? Is 12 speed one too many? You know the score, write it in the comments below! 👇

Did I hear correctly “the rim brake version (brakes/levers) must be run with a cable, as they are not wired”? Is that to say the Non-rim/disc brake version are electrical wired for actuation?
@twatts4436
@twatts4436 2 года назад
@@mikpopiel473 the rim brake version is wired for shifting, with cables for the brakes.. The disc is wireless to the shifter, with a wire between them. The braking is hydraulic. Looks like shimano has decided rim brakes are niche and it's not worth the development time to make the rime brake version wireless. Which is fair, given the associated costs and relatively small market segment rime brakes occupy in new sales.

I'm on Dura-Ace 9100 all mechanical with rim brakes. It's going to take a miracle to pull me away from 9100. Before that, I was on Dura-Ace 7800 (Shimano's best groupset ever IMO). It's nice to see what Dura-Ace 9200 has evolved into, but knowing what I know now, if I were buying new today, I'd opt for some leftover 9100 groupset for a new build. I'm all about keeping things as simple and as trouble free as possible. In fact, my current 9100 bike is my last Dura-Ace bike. From now on, whatever I build, I'm going to build with 105. Honestly, I'm not pushing my bikes far enough to notice the difference or to justify carbon bits on my drivetrain. Plus, not only does it cost way less, but it's far easier to source the components and much easier to tune.

Good luck, Matthew! Regarding the new Dura Ace, it's very incrementally improved over the previous version. Like most Shimano stuff, it's devoid of BS and long on functionality. I'm sure it will work beautifully and be terrifically reliable. Still, I think that SRAM is leaving Shimano behind. For example, Rival AXS has thrown down the gauntlet in offering state of the art technology to the masses. Rival AXS is arguably superior to new Dura Ace in a few key ways at a tiny fraction of the price.

But Ultegra R8000 and R8020 will still be produced, it's not going away anytime soon.

Still completely wired for mechanical brakes? It was already trash for being partially wired.

I'm a bit disappointed the small gear isn't 10 tooth.

Can you really push a 10-54? You must be really strong, my road bike has a 13-23 cassete with a 53-39 crankset and I can't really push the 13-53 unless I'm going down a real big hill.

No it's so you can run a smaller chainring and still have the same final drive. A 52-11 is close to a 48-10 or somewhere there about from what I've read it's more effiecent, lighter, and persoally I think the smaller chainrings look better.

You know that running smaller rings in both the front and rear tp achieve a given gear inch results in increased drivetrain inefficiency, correct?

@@rcg9573 factoring in weight and wind resistance? I've seen information hat says otherwise. 🤷‍♂️

Shimano engineers: we had to make hoods a bit bigger because couldn't fit new brake mechanisms inside the old size... Shimano marketing: no, no, not like that... we improved ergonomics because old hoods were too small for some people!

Would've preferred matt black - glossy black always look a mess...
