The Japanese brand Shimano offers a wide range of groupsets - starting with Claris and Sora, which you’ll find on entry level road bikes. Tiagra is the next step up, followed by Shimano 105 which is typically specced on bikes costing upwards of £1000.
Shimano 105 is considered Shimano’s first performance groupset, and for many people it is the best option in combining performance, value and longevity. Ultegra is next and is very similar to Dura-Ace in terms of performance, though Dura-Ace is lighter. You’ll find Ultegra on bikes from around £1500.
Shimano currently produces Ultegra and Dura-Ace in electronic versions, denoted by Di2, and newer Dura-Ace, Ultegra and 105 models now come with disc brakes.
You can find all of these products from Shimano on Freewheel.co.uk, a great way of shopping online but still supporting local bikes shops

Shimano range is really confusing. Even finding the right combo of parts to a series i.e. Ultegra is a research project. Shimano should make a virtual "workshop" where you can put various part numbers together on a frame geometry of your choice - so your options are blocked if they cannot work together. Other companies have this (PC parts springs to mind), but the bicycle industry does not seem to have catched up to this fairly simple way of guiding customers towards the correct parts. Lots of cyclists end up with incompatible parts sooner or later.

If I have a 2x9, can I use a Claris on that? How bout a Tiagra which is on 2x10
@hailstorm7868
@hailstorm7868 2 года назад
By official shimano docs you should only use parts within same groupset except brakes. Most of the time you can mix components with same gear counts within road or mtb lineups, but there can be some wird compatibility issues.
@Kromaatikse
@Kromaatikse 2 года назад
@@hailstorm7868 My hybrid came with a weird mixture of Alivio and Nexave 8-speed parts, plus a Spectra triple crankset mounted on some semi-anonymous Slovakian-made bottom bracket. I just replaced the cassette, bottom bracket and crankset with slightly wider-range versions, keeping the derailleurs. It meant I was putting a 9-speed crankset with an 8-speed chain, rear cassette and derailleurs. It works, but the Nexave front derailleur is right at the edge of its capabilities and needed very careful adjustment. Trying to put together a flexible but inexpensive drivetrain for a utility bike is basically impossible within a single Shimano groupset, and even figuring out which groupset a given part (identified by model number) belongs to is harder than it should be. Mathematically, I'd like to be able to use the 7-speed 12-32T cassette from the Tourney groupset with a 46-30T compact double crankset. Knowing that the latter exists but not what groupsets it's available in, hunting for it on Shimano's website is a real chore.

I put a tourney front and back derailleur on an old bike from the 80s and I upgraded the freewheel from 5 to 7 speed. I also got the tourney frame-mounted indexed shifters. Works absolutely perfect. And It cost me less than 30 bucks. 2x7 is absolutely fine for a $30 investment.

KallaMig. For reasons I won't bore with, I am presently riding a road bike with - horor of horrors - à Tourney 7 speed rear derailleur operated by a AO50 palm shifter. It is an astonishingly good combiation, it has worked flawlessly for 6,000km. The AO50 shifter is excellent - changes are snappy and precise, and it can go rapidly through the gears, and dreadful heresy, I find I now prefer this to 'Brifters'. Shockin.g

I had Claris on a 1000€ Gravel Bike, equipped with fenders and light etc. When setup correctly it shifted well, but the front derailleur required quite a lot of force and the rear derailleur required indexing every other ride. It came with mechanical disc brakes which were quite disappointing. I don't mind working on my bike regularly but this was a bit annoying, so I upgraded to GRX 400 (Tiagra equivalent), and shifting is both easier, quicker and more reliable right out of the box. After 300 km I didn't have to adjust anything yet. Super happy with the upgrade! I learned a lot about working on my bike on the entry level system, but I'm happy I have to use that knowledge less know ;)

You left out the best feature of the Dura Ace 9100 mech. It still shifts like a dream, but if you’re stuck in Podunk, Colorado with a broken derailleur or shift lever you can substitute almost any 105 or Ultegra part from literally any bike shop for around $50, and replace it with Dura Ace later when you get home. This can save you from hitching to the hotel and waiting two days for a new and expensive electronic derailleur, or ending your ride and vacay altogether if you run out of time. You can also put a giant pie plate cassette on and a large cage derailleur too if you need to climb that 30 degree hill, and convert it back in about 15 minutes without replacing the shift levers. You can also fix almost anything on a Dura Ace mech system by just carrying a long shift cable, a long brake cable, and a very handy Leatherman Squirt model PS4 (with pliers, 56g). For my type of riding which does not include a team repair van or complex tools, it trumps di2’s complexity, charging, battery that goes bad occasionally, and lack of availability at smaller shops that don’t carry expensive parts ($190 for ultegra di2 RD, and no one has batteries). You sacrifice a little performance with mech- I missed a single shift once before I reached 15,000 miles with 9100, and you have to trim it yourself so if you race crits or do hill climb races for money, get di2. Contador and Nibali forced Shimano to let them ride mechanical until 2016 because they liked the feedback better than di2. I’m no Contador, so I guess it’ll be good until they force me too.

Ain't nothing wrong with running Sora. Keep your bike and its components clean, properly lubed and adjusted, and you will get excellent performance from it for many years to come. Also, my Rx to all of you for flawless performance: Occasionally wipe clean the exposed cables on your bike, loosen your cable ends, and lube the inside of your cable housings with Tri-Flow with Teflon by applying it on to the un-exposed parts of your cables, and running cables back and forth in your housings before returning the cable housings to their proper positions, wipe off the excess lube, and re-adjust your derailleurs and brakes to your usual preferences. Also be sure to also lube all pivot points, such as on your brakes, brake levers, shift levers, and derailleurs, and wipe off the excess.
