Good review ? No. It's a terrific review ! I'm in the market for a spinning reel and this video has helped me immensely. I have looked at the Stella and was shocked when I saw the price tag. I don't see that as a fair trade for my money. Some folks would think the price as a good value and God bless them. I wonder what the odds are regarding total sales of each reel. 10-1, 5-1, 20-1? Anyway thank you for your effort. BTW I think Alan Hawk is a wonderful writer and smart guy. God Bless.

Solid honest review Ryan. You covered a bunch just from watching the videos of you catching a wide variety of fish. I've actually talked on the surf about what you have conquered with this reel which was impressive to say the least for $300. The parts and service from shimano is a huge deal breaker in its class.

Like and subscribed BUT let me say why it was ALMOST a great video. First, I was guessing the entire time if this was a 10,000 size reel. I never saw it on the spool and you never mentioned the size. I assume it was because you did mention the gear ratio. I really did like the video but if you could confirm your rod and reel setup that you had paired in the video I would appreciate it very much. Thanks and I look forward to more

Nice review, you nailed it. On Shimano and Daiwa’s website they talk about Hagane gear blah blah to lure people money. I have 10 years old reel and they still perform. I believe these companies are enjoying fisher man money more than actual fisher man enjoying catching fish. Only few people catch good fish and not all but every one spends a lot of money on buying latest and greatest rods and reels.

Like so many things, you pay a LOT more, for just a little more in quality and functionality. But, IMO, get a Thunnus, because the bait feeder feature is that big a deal. And sealed beyond any reason. My friend's Thunnus went overboard, to about 100 feet DOWN; he fished it back with a jig stick--then fished it the rest of the day. That night? He took it apart, not ONE drop of water inside. How is that for sealed and nowhere near a Stella in price.

I have both Saragosa and 2015 Stella SW1000SZ. They both have served me well. After the Stella brings in a 100lb yft I get frustrating bail closer on the following cast. Now I know why.. but no issues with stopping them from top water casting. However the Gosa gets really hot when almost, I mean almost getting spooled, but no premature flip bail. I need durability out there on the north Pacific Both reels has never been dunked but a simple wash and wipe down after use and stored there in warm climate I used them every 4-6months for 4 years on my return. serviced twice for re greasing and bail trip/flexing. looking at Penn slammer IV Don't want to break my arm. Any idea the weight on the 6500h.(hidden files)Why dont they come with beveled spool. No brainer1!!!!! I dont need all that friction in my life.

The new 8000 still have the same annoying wobble in the rotor. It looks like you have the 10 000 which have the same rotor as the 8000. The wobble is less noticeable on the 10 000 because of the lower gear ratio (slower rotation speed)

To fish well you need to be confident you have an advantage on the fish, this is what keeps you concentrating on your game from 1st to last cast of the day, the knowing if a fish comes by you know how and have what it takes to catch it, this advantage, this confidence you build in yourself comes from either or both your knowledge and technique and from having good gear, confidence comes at a high price for some, in this times more expensive is better, not all people look anymore at value for money, who knows if they came with something much more expensive than Stella they might sell like mini bread loafs. Saragosa priced to sell, Stella priced to make larger profit on smaller numbers. Not all my reels are sealed however I rarely have issues with salt and corrosion. (apart from BG's sticky drag knob and Stradic's noisy roller guides) a good rinse and once a year open clean and grease keeps them going forever. Some sites sell all wearable parts which are easy to replace. I must say that having boat in Florida fishing all year round brings maintenance time higher once you gone through the Centaur slow pitch jigging, Saragosa sw speed jigging, the BG's live bait surface , the Speedmaster's wrecks fishing , the Stradic FJ 8000 (rare) surface stick bait and popping reels, the Tyrnos trolling reels, the Stradic FI (yes still going strong) bass fishing, new Stradic SW shore fishing, add to that I like to have at least a couple so I can take along friends who don't have thier own gear, add to that the odd reels picked up here and there as travel souvenirs and piled in the big box with hundreds of unused untested lures for which you always think you found them the perfect job until you purchase the appropriate reel for the job, plus soon I hope the deep drop reels which luckily will also serve as kite reels, once you've done them all a year has passed and you can start again from beginning. Full time job...haha It seems I am very much a 200 to 300$ reel king of guy, I think for what fish we have here most shimano's mid-range do the job no problem and for long time. The BG's are my cheapest but I like that on the 5000 at 100 bucks you can put a lot of line which is great for sailfish, I am thinking the new Saragosa's should replace them soon. I should think of something else, real obsession...

Great review… based on this and Alan’s review I bought a 10,000 and 25,000. I do have several Shimano and Daiwa reels. But, this seems to be the best all-arounder that I can lend to guests or use as a backup for tuna fishing. Living in Japan, I can buyTwin Powers or Certates for around $100 more than a Saragosa. I just picked up the 10000 primarily for throwing jigs up to 6oz but 3oz 90% of the time. The 10000 is a big reel so I THOUGHT I was going back for the 8000. Checking specs right now I may go to the 6000 or possibly even the 5000. The 6 can carry 290/30 PP and the 5 carries 225/30 PP. but the reels weigh the same essentially. The use of smaller set ups has come a long way. In the past light tackled killed a lot fish because it took so long to land them. Now even the lighter reels can can get a fish to the boat quickly enough. Sometimes I don’t think rods have kept up with reels.
@RyanMorie

My favorite offshore Shimano reel is actually the TwinPower. I've owned Stella's but the TwinPower feels more solid. It's definitely heavier but it feels stronger.
@maxschmidt9461
@maxschmidt9461 2 года назад
It does feel good but technically it's not stronger than a Gosa. The old Stella (SWA, SWB) is a totally different reel, the SWC isn't. The rotor and the anti reverse of the older Stellas play in a different league. Now only the Makaira Spinning and the Saltiga are true big game spinners in current production.
@maxschmidt9461
@maxschmidt9461 2 года назад
The 2008 Stella SWA did have the all metal anti reverse already and I believe even the 2001 FA. The anti reverse in the SWC, Saragosa, Spheros, Twin power, and even many recently produced budget reels was in the 1998 and maybe even the first 1993 Stella.
@maxschmidt9461
@maxschmidt9461 2 года назад
It only makes a difference in high drag uses, cause both types live extremely long, the difference is simply that while both last extremely long extremely long when fished within they're healthy range, it's that range of drag pressure. The anti reverse in the old Stella(very similar to the anti reverse in the Saltiga and Makaira) has an almost unlimited range while the one in the new Stella, Saragosa etc. Is much more limited. Point is that both types will perform identically (even though the one with the plastic housing feels kinda spungy and less solid) until the lesser one is pushed to, or beyond it's limits, then the all metal system will be superior since it's stronger. BTW: The two anti reverse systems are basically the same, both use metal (SS) break cylinders and metal (SS)springs which won't wear out like the standard plastic V springs. The difference between the two anti reverse systems we are talkin' about here is that the all metal anti reverse has an metal frame which is directly fitted into the reels frame (plastic in the Gosa, metal in the Stella) while the cheaper version has a plastic housing which is simply screwed down to the frame of the reel. Again, both systems work the same, but one has an extremely solid connection without any weak points and the other is simpler and cheaper but just as effective as long you don't push it too far. This is also why the new Stella has a lesser drag output then the old ones (real drag, shimanos claims are rubbish)

30 is an ENORMOUS amount of drag, fact is, when I was a kid, the industry standard, the "Jigmaster" (Penn 500) was about eight pounds and with that, people caught large, offshore fish. And they still do. Here is one downside of this much drag-seriously. Say you have a drag set that high and you do NOT have the bail OFF, a large fish hits running away from you. The rod/reel CAN fly right out of your hand, you CAN get hurt, a fact of fishing today. One thing for double damn sure, put that rod in a rod receiver belt, not your gut, your leg or your....groin. Be ready

I’d fish it with 65lb braid. It’ll probably fit around 550 yards. You can add a top-shot of varying size monofilament depending on the situation. (Connect your braid to your mini top-shot with an FG knot for best results)

It’s so hard to choose when it comes to giant blue fin tuna cause once you out there and hooked up you want to have the confidence in your reel to get the job done and not being able to catch fish side by side with each reel how does one choose

What can you upgrade on the reel to make it like a Stella? Maybe a video of certain upgrades you can do to the reel to make it closer to the Stella. Ie changing to a bearing in the knob…

Depends on what you like in a reel. I'm a bigger guy, don't mind a little extra weight to get the solid feel of the Slammer. If being super light is super important, the Saragosa is going to be better. Both will get the job done.

Newbie subscriber but LONGTIME fisherman. Great videos and you definitely know your stuff. I will be purchasing a Gosa SW A as soon as I get back to the US from Mexico in October. Do you have the dimensions for the low friction washer (11:02)? I want to replace it with a sealed ball bearing but cannot obtain one as they are backordered from Shimano (PN: 10TG8). By-the-way, Shimano calls it a spacer. Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide.

General you're right but in stella it feels more like some more fun to work withIt's like 2 cars. One Mercedes that costs $100000 and the other one a $5000 Toyota. They both end up in the same place at the same time. The difference is in indulgence and comfort and power

Nice review, what about the difference between the Saragosa and the Spheros?
@RyanMorie
@RyanMorie 2 года назад
Less significant than most will leave you to believe. The Spheros has only a top stack drag which is less capable than the gosa. Additionally a less protected line roller and a few bushing present where the Gosa has bearings. In terms of actual performance they’d actually perform quite similarly in most situations.

my opinion is clear: if you have an 2013 0r 2008 Stella SW, use it as long as possible, by no means do these reels compare to the 2019 Stella, if you want a new Shimano, get a Gosa, its just as capable, if you want a superior reel, get the Saltiga or Certate SW(Certate SW is the same reel, just with an Zaion Rotor, a cheaper handle and a simpler made drag knob) or if you don't like Mag sealed, can live with less crankin' power and smoothness, no hardened spool lip, an aluminum bail arm and a bit extra weight go with the Makaira spinning which is probably the toughest spinner ever made, I managed to break a 14k Saltiga and get the rotor and mainshaft of an 18000 bend a lil, can't imagine thsat with the Makaira, but off the rocks I need the hardened spool lip and an aluminum bail wire is ba news as well, so the makaira is my beach reel and fo the XXXXXXXH boat jobs, when I expect to use 60lb of drag or even a bit more and yes, I've done that on spinners, it works, it just requires the right rod, a very strong real seat and he angler needs to have lots of structural strength( you really need to use your whole body) and a really good technique to do so. for anythin' to 40lb the 8-14k and till 50lb the 18-20k Saltigas will do and they definetly are the nicer reel, not as heavy sealed though and I'm not a fan of mag sealed reels, in this price range for all the Saltiga offers I can accept it though. another thing about 2019 Stella vs. 2020 Saragosa: the 18/20k Gosas actually have a bit more drag than the same size stellas, while in the mid sized reels (8-14k) it's the opposite.

Mr max , what’s your recommendation for boat fishing , if you have to choose between Stella Sw 6000 , 8000 or Saltiga !!
@maxschmidt9461
@maxschmidt9461 Год назад
@@S.SABRY. boat fishing is a broad term and it depends on a few things, first is the fish you target, second what rod you use. If the fish, and this includes the fish of a lifetime that's very rare can be caught with a 6k no prob then go for it, gonna be more fun. I would choose the Saragossa Instead of the Stella though (the 2013/SWB Stella is fine, but wobbles and the Gosa is actually a bit more powerful with about double the actual drag out put in this size, plus much cheaper) if you don't have a problem with the service difficulties of MagSealed reels the 6K Certate SW(basically a Saltiga with a Zaion rotor like the 2014/2015 Saltigas) or if you really want to spend some extra cash for a heavier reel with minor improvements, like a better bail the 2023 Saltiga are awesome reels, both run notably smoother than the Gosa and have a slightly better drag. Now if you have to expect bigger fish, have to stop them from structure, gonna fish heavier line (upwards of 40lb) and the Rod can handle a heavier reel (if a rod takes both a small 5/6k and a medium 8/10/14k fine, go with the bigger one if there's any chance you might need it) here go with the Certate SW or Saltiga, but the 14k, it's the same exact reel as the 8k, just a bigger spool, which not only gives you extra line capacity (weight is practically the same, sometimes 10g, trust me you won't feel it) but the bigger spool also makes line come off a bit better, so it casts further and you can drop deeper till the line starts to get sticky and doesn't come off smoothly(with an open bail). On that note, if you're aware that the service won't be available forever, you can also get the 5000, or better 5500 2014 Expedition, 2015 Saltiga or 2016 Catalina, all the same reel basically and the advantage to the Certate SW (basically the new Catalina, so a Saltiga with some minor cost cuts, that are mostly cosmetic and don't hurt the reels ability to catch fish) and 2020 Saltiga is that it's a lighter reel, it has less drag, only about 2/3 but it's enough for pretty much anything you would do on a boat other than spooling it with 100lb line and fighting fish purely over the reel with no rod involvement and on some rods the old medium size Saltiga/Catalina works great, but the newer counterparts are just a touch too heavy

@@maxschmidt9461 Mr. Max thank you for your reply First of all I am from Egypt , Red Sea fishing , we don’t have any Maintenance’s Stores. So we get the parts from Japan and do the service with our hands ,,, I am targeting the big fish , specifically Tuna , and GT I do fishing on Oil Rigs Yes I need something for lifetime, high durability , lots of Drag to stop the fish But in the same time we don’t have the variety of reels , some time I get my reels From Dubai , I have already the Saragosa Sw 14k , but I am thinking for something more powerful , some thing can stop these type of fishing what I have right now in our market just these reels ( Stilla SW 6000 PG , HG , XG , 8000 HG , PG ) and ( Saltiga 8000 P , H 2020 ) and (Saltiga Dog Fight 7000 , 8000 H ) So what do you think in this case Specially you don’t have the variety of reels ,,, and you do the maintenance with your hands And yes yes First Priority durability high Durability . Small note Sir I can make order from Dubai for the new Saltiga 2023 if it’s your advice I trust your experience. And waiting for your reply.
@maxschmidt9461
@maxschmidt9461 Год назад
@@S.SABRY. ok, while the Saltiga is amazing, IMO it's out cause it needs to be serviced by a Daiwa center, if not you basically need a new reel after 1-2 hard seasons or 3-5 medium intense ones. For the fish you mentioned a 6k ain't enough. I recommend you try to get the Makaira 10000, doesn't matter if you order it from overseas. It's a heavy reel but it won't fail you, definitely more bulletproof than the Stella, also requires less maintenance and it can be serviced by anyone who knows how to service a reel, though even without service it'll last longer than the Stella or Saltiga. If you can't get the Makaira, get the SWB Stella, again try to get a 14k or buy the 8k and order a 14k spool from somewhere else, especially for Tuna you need the line capacity. If you can only get the SWC 2019/2020 Stella it's not really worth it, only difference that matters is that it has about 3kg extra drag in 8-14k but if it's between a 8k and the 15k Gosa you already have, the extra line capacity of the Gosa will do more for you to land fish like Tuna, if it's the SWB/2013 Stella it can be a different story but I'd still say the 8k is only about equal to a 14k Gosa just from the ability to catch fish, of course the Stella is more fun to fish. Hope this helps, tight lines

You know given the topic of the spinning reel , when it comes to the engineering and ball bearing system that it has, and with a blue million fishermen and leisurely fishermen and fisherwomen, and the hundreds of thousands of fishing people out there, the opinions of the engineering on the design between the saragosa and stella is like dam little to the size of the universe, as long as there all smooth, I think there all keepers,

Not likely! It’s a manual bail and it has a rubber ring under the rotor that provides friction to prevent the bangle from turning while mid cast. I also had no problems with it in my personal use
