Shimano SPD Pedal Overhaul - Clean/Lube/Install New Bearings

I show how to service Shimano SPD bike pedals (disassemble, clean, replace ball bearings, grease, re-assemble). The bearings are 3/32 inch size, and each pedal takes 24 of them. This pedal seemed kind of rough when turning. I probably could have just adjusted the cone on the bearings, but decided to to an overhaul instead.
The mini grease gun I use in the video is made by Dualco.

RJ the Bike Guy: Thanks for this tutorial - I had the right pedal axle threads for the crank arm go bad on my Shimano PD A-600 SPD / Road pedals and looked long and far for a replacement without luck. (Shimano has since replaced these pedals with a cheaper version.) After watching this video, I disassembled an old pair of MTB pedals and found that axle and other internal guts were interchangeable except the plastic 16 nub thingy but since I re-used my aluminum sleeve w/ hex nut it was not a problem. Now I'm up and pedaling again, no money expended, a great learning experience - keep up the good work.

the best way to adjust cup& cone type bearings is to start off with some play,and tighten in small increments until there is JUST no play. because there can be play in the threads, it's important to check for play when the lock nuts are tightened onto the cones.

Thanks for the video. It looks like the same instruction goes for any SPDs (except that more expensive have a 17mm nut instead of that proprietary plastic one). Even SPD-SL (road variant) has basically the same axle assembly. BTW, can you do a video on overhauling (or disassembly) of the clipping mechanism?
@MaplePanda04

I don’t think it’s a really good idea to disassemble the clip mechanism, there’s a pretty powerful spring in there and you’d have a heck of a time trying to reassemble it.

Hi, thanks for the video! Do you have any suggestion for my problem? On my SPD-SL Ultegra R8000 i wanted to regrease them, because they were spinning too freely. Left pedal was fine, change the grease.. works great. The right pedal when the spindle is out it spins absolutely free without any rough feel, but when I screw the axle in so it is almost at the end, the spindle starts to turn very rough and hard. It feels like something in the pedal body is blocking the spindle to turn smoothly. I cleaned the body about 1000times, tried more grease, less grease but nothing changes. Do you think, that the body could be damaged when using too much grease? It happened at some point, when I was pushing the old grease out with screwing the axle in.. I´ve never seen anything like this, did many pedals in the past with this method and all works fine. Thanks in advance!

@achn2b

Should the plastic piece be able to move a bit along the spindle shaft? I couldn't get mine together without it having that little bit of movement, so figured I had it wrong. But no amount of tightening down on the bearings will eliminate it. So I took the spindle out of the body of my other pedal which I have not done anything to yet, and that plastic bit moves back and forth along the spindle also. The movement is along the spindle shaft, not a back and forth rocking.

Very useful video, thanks! The process is very straightforward, however I am running into some issues during reassembly. I am servicing Shimano PD-6800 pedals and have cleaned and regreased them. Have adjusted the bearings in the vise and they feel perfect, run smoothly and no movement. However, when I reassemble the pedal unit, somehow there is some pressure being created on the bearings, so they become very stiff and can hardly turn. I have tried backing-off the pressure on the cones, but then when I reassemble the pedals, there is movement in the axle, so obviously its too loose. Any ideas what the cause of this may be?

After the spindle with the bearings and races is removed from the cage, it seems to me that it would be easy to soak it in kerosene or alcohol for a while to clean out all of the old grit and grease. Soak, shake, empty, repeat, dry and then reassemble with grease. Maybe that is overkill but it would be easy to do.

RJ When you say marine grease do you mean the stuff they sell in auto stores for boat trailer wheel bearings? There may be parts of the country where marine stuff is hard to come by.The boat trailer stuff is not supposed to wash away with water easily, Boat trailers are very hard on wheel bearing they are often driven for hundreds of miles and then dunked in water without being allowed to cool down so the grease for them is pretty durable stuff.

+WoD STALKER If the bike is new, take it back to the shop. Sounds can come from anyplace and seem like they are coming from other places. Could be the pedal, or the seat post, or a cracked frame, etc.... You have to work through it.

+RJ The Bike Guy Bike has like a year and more than 2000km... I changed the pédals and noise were no longer here, this is why im sure its from my pedals

+WoD STALKER Okay, you said "Its new". If the pedal is new, make sure the pedal is mounted into the crank tightly. Make sure to grease the threads. If the noise is inside the pedal and it's new, return it. Again you have to work through the issue. Isolate where the noise is and fix it.

+RJ The Bike Guy Ok ty for very fast reply :) In fact returning it would cost highly more than buying the litle shimano tool, and i think that i'd better learn how to service it, for the future. If grease inside and on the threads can fix it i'd rather doing it myself

What size bearings are used if new are needed?

You need to measure what are in your pedal. This pedal had 3/32" bearings. Yours may be different.

@@RJTheBikeGuy My pedals are M770's. I'm actually surprised I can't find a rebuild kit for them, as it should be straightforward. Especially the rubber seal seems a little worn!

@@RJTheBikeGuy I'm pretty sure ALL shimano spd's run 3/32. I just replaced the ones in my DX SPD M647. Have yet to find any documentation or occurrence of non 3/32 in spd shimano pedals.

At 5:50 you hit on the key to these pedals: plastic. It just so happens that the big plastic part there is also a load bearing piece. It's absolutely shameful that these were built this way. It's an otherwise pretty decent design and I have to imagine that the corners were cut for sheer expense. Good video and pretty good instructions. But I honestly have no idea how anyone could get to the point of rebuilding these before the plastic parts wear out. I have had two sets of these (my mistake) and in both cases the big plastic part wears so severely that it just grinds on the shaft of the pedal. *And*, that big plastic part is what holds the whole shaft into the pedal casing. It's really shoddy and truly shameful. Another 12 cents and they could have made that part aluminum or another alloy. And for another buck or two those could be sealed cased bearings. I was stunned when I took these apart the first time to find just how poorly they are made.

I have A530's with the same type of spindle/axle, with over 13,500 miles on them. I've cleaned them a couple of times and replaced the bearings once, but they're certainly not worn out. I need to clean them again but they're still doing pretty good.
