Dumble Amps have become almost mystical! They're so rare that most people can't really define what the Dumble sound is! But Shin's Music's boutique pedals recreated that legendary tone in a pedal, so you can have a Dumble at your feet! | tinyurl.com/yxgt3psl

Hand made in Tokyo, Japan, Shin's Music's boutique pedals are based on some of the world's most revered amplifiers. Most famously, the legendary Dumble! However, Shin's does a lot more than just Dumple-inspired pedals. They make some of the best boutique overdrives, boosts, compressors and pre-amps we have ever seen.

John Mayer recently made headlines when one of his Dumbles went down during a live performance. The headline was the fact that literally as soon as it went down his tech ran out there and immediately replaced it...with another Dumble. Some guys have all the luck...(except for the fact that one of his Dumbles blew up) LOL!

The one word i always use to describe the Dumble sound is overtones. They are always harmonically rich and when you hold a note it always goes into this really nice feedback. The Cornerstone Gladio is an excellent example. These pedals sound great.

Recently came out of the boutique rabbit hole and after a long long time (years) of endless OD pedal purchases I think I finally found ‘my’ sound. Only happened once I took my KOT off and replaced it with a Boss SD-1 and The Dane. I’d been sceptical of a lot of RU-vidrs signature gear upto that point, but having tried a early demo model, that Thorpy himself was plugging at a trade show, it always stayed with me until I recently snagged one at a more sensible price. Weird position to be in now, sat watching boutique pedal demos thinking, “ I wouldn’t swap my sound out for that.” I was particularly underwhelmed by pretty much all these pedals. The TS and RAT clones highlighting the strange phenomenon of boutique builders trying to replicate industry standard / sound of ages pedals whilst somehow missing the core ingredients of what makes those pedals tick whilst adding £££ to the price. Anyway I’ve now got a KOT gathering dust on the shelf and a £50 SD1 cutting through the mix, taking all the glory on every solo … Go figure 🤔🎸😏

Bought the Dumbloid Twin (SP and ODS) a couple years ago, then met them at NAMM. Really great pedal and really nice people.
@BeachJazzMusic
@BeachJazzMusic 2 года назад
The original ODS was built for Robben Ford. There is a video on RU-vid where Robben talks about his original Dumble and how it came to be, which I was fortunate to play. I feel that the mystique is far greater than the actual amp. I was seriously thinking of getting one. At that time a Steel String Singer was $5,000.00 which was super expensive for an amp then. When I got a call that I could come and play Robben's I couldn't get there fast enough. Even back then they had the mystique. I was really disappointed as I personally didn't care for it as it didn't get clean enough and I played it for about 4 hours. The edge of breakup tone was great though. That said all Dumbles are custom made to what the person who buys one is looking for. I've only seen two. The one I mentioned and another one that came into a friend of mine's shop to get repaired. He pulled the chassis out and it had all this black goop all over the circuit. Impossible to repair. He called the guy up and told him he'd have to send it back to Dumble to get it fixed. I seriously wonder how many people who 'want' a Dumble have ever actually played one.

Before he switched to the all vintage Fender amps when he began the Three Kings tour, Joe Bonamassa was a Dumble guy. He had like 8 of them and sold them all. For me, that was the Holy Grail of guitar tone for years. I went to a guitar show and one of the dealers had a Dumble from Joe's collection and had a price tag of $130,000. I asked if I could finance it at a $1/week for 130,000 weeks. He said he would consider it. Haven't heard back from him yet...

Played threw a few Dumbles . Played threw just about everything since I started in the middle seventies . The pros who I met that did the same all agreed we liked LOUD STIFF UNFORGIVING ICE PICK SOUNDS . I still love the Dumble sound, surprised anyone under 50 does. Howard himself has changed over the years , these days he hotrods a fail proof more traditional fender tone. (Joe Bonamassa, Kenny Wayne Sheppard, Clapton all playing newly Dumblized Fenders ). The JBL 120 was the Best speaker in the 70s. When the kids gonna bring that baby back? ( The one with the metal dust cone that you heard on every classic tune). Always felt Howard was just ripping off Randall Smith's Boogie Like all the others since anyway.

I've got a dumbloid /feedloid by Ryan in Arizona. Its pretty identical. Interestingly it has clipping modes for Timmy and tubescreamer and what you notice is the DUMBLE tone is very UN compressed and fuzzy/narly compared to the others. I think the general assumption is it has to be the smoothest and most compressed - not so... Quite hard and unforgiving on anything but high gain. And all the better for it

I've owned two ethos overdrives (one with a 30watt amp), an original Zendrive (pre Lovepedal), Amplified Nation Big Bloom and Alpha drive. The Big Bloom was based on the Shin's Dumbloid circuit and sounded b****y awful, as did the Dumbloid in this video. It was brittle and the gain sounded cheap and artificial. The ethos pedals live were a nightmare with all those controls and options. The sound was fine but I still maintain its a studio tool than a live solution where you might want to make corrections on the fly. The Alpha drive was simple, a bit dull and uninspiring. For me, the straight forward and iconic Dumble tonality was best captured in the Zendrive. I have never regretted passing on the other pedals, but selling the Zendrive was a daft move and it's going to be resolved soon enough when I get a secondhand example. If you like the Dumble tone, it's best to head for something that doesn't sound fizzy and harsh under gain (the Zendrive can also suck, but has a more pleasing tone and gain stage to these ears thats easily dialled in, making it more usable. The Shin version is revealed in this video as overpriced, buzz saw sounding, nasal and harmonically unpleasant. I know theres a lot who'll probably disagree but even the reviewers are struggling to say nice things about these boxes. Their expressions almost give the game away on several occasions, too.
@leandershah1617

Completely agree with the Shin's Dumbloid. One thing though for anyone purchasing that pedal, If you have a clean amp (Twins/Deluxe/Two-Rock), Dumbloids won't work with those as well as it would with something like a Marshall (better if you could put it in the effects loop but if not also, it'll sound close to an authentic sound than mushy with some shrill/artificial notes in there). I experimented a lot with Shin's pedals (signal chain, series/parallel in a wet/dry setup, different amps, etc) but nothing worked as good as a Marshall or Mesa-Boogie (again, best in the fx loop).

Cool to see you demo some of the less common pedals from Shin's, like the MkI. I think you could get better results if you tweaked the amp more for the pedals, and stop playing into crystalline clean amps. Every dirt pedal sounds better through a warmed up amp that is either on the verge of breakup, or mildly breaking up. The TS variant probably needed some good breakup in the amp to really sing. I have seen many Dumbloid videos where it does more of the smooth Dumble, liquid OD thing than what you guys came up with, which was more of the overdriven Fender tone. Still, a nice demo and thanks for doing it.

Over here they (Dumbles) are just slightly LESS rarer than Hens Teeth, an acquaintance of mine bought one (ODS) a few years back for around $60k. Yes it was good, yes he passed it on after a few months... I have two friends who collect Ferrari's - far more expensive proposition yet they don't seem to lose money either. I met the man once at Capitol Studios on Hollywood and Vine decades ago, he didn't strike me as weird at all. Myths do pop up about such men who do not want to see their names splashed around in media and need privacy. Best, Pete. PS I thought the pedal was fuzzy around the edges.

One of the great things about Pete's playing is his ability to get a wide variety of tones using only his hands and no settings changes. These pedals wholly removed that ability and made everything sound the same, and I was listening on a good rig, not an iPhone. My overwhelming impression was of cotton wool and rubber. Pip Pip!!

I've never heard the appeal of a Dumble, it sounds just like a driven Fender amp.

The appeal is being able to say you have a Dumble, and no one else does, therefore you are now a better guitar player than everyone else.

Dumble is a marketing genius. He makes amps just like others do. Except he pretends his are made so much more different and special with magic goop. Schematics for amps are not all that different depending on features. That’s why amp tech’s can work on different amps because the tech is not that different from one to the other. IMHO 🤷🏼‍♂️ On the other hand JB and R Ford probably have better ears than I do so maybe there’s something there?

I’m not dumb Dumbo worship guy but clearly a thing going with them Not worth the money but What I know is some have a solid state rectifying section which adds to the more immediate response to the note/notes played There is less 3D feeling compared to a fender You can’t hide playing it as much the soft 3D sound of a blackface fender is enjoyable and helps that Ever play a Roland jazz? Dumble is a further tweaking of that fender sound to fit particular players styles

Vertex is known to hava a couple of amazing pedals: SSS: Steel String Supreme (emulates a Steel String Singer) (SRV, John Mayer) And the Ultraphonix (I think...) for the Dumble overdrive special (more like Robben Ford).

They have the Steel string, the SSS, the SSS slight return version, Ultraphonix mk1 &2 and the ultraphonix HRM. I own the SSS and it is great, I don't always use the supreme side but it's a great pedal. I think one day I'll buy the ultraphonix 2 or HRM. Most dumble clone pedals that aren't dirt cheap are good, it's all down to personal preference, the gladio is great too.

@@drdre4397 I think I might treat my self next year with a Ceriatone OTS 20. And mayeb a pedal like the SSS.
