I listened to this song on repeat when my adult son was so angry with me, he shut me out of his life. We started emailing each other and I sent him this video. We reunited shortly after. I’ll always love him, unconditionally.

When I was 6, my biological father announced he was gonna leave me and my mother. After the long and painful process of him leaving, another situation that was just as bad started when my mother was heartbroken for years. She said she always wanted me by her side. I never left her. I never went to my dad. And above all else, I never lost faith. I always heard this song along with others on her vehicle radio just after my father left. Songs such as, Better Than Me by Hinder, Second Chance by Shinedown, Use Somebody and Sex on Fire by Kings of Leon and amongst others. Those were very painful and troubling time indeed. I now know at 19 years old what my mother was going through. I’ve never been in a relationship before but if people got past my physical appearance and looked deep inside to what really matters in a person, I’m a gentle hearted man. This song means so much to me. I lost my husband six years ago from cancer. It still hurts. He would go to chemotherapy and come home and we would sit for over an hour or more and listen to Shinedown CD’s. Listening to their music got him through so much.

It’s 4/03 in 2024. @2:57 My favorite part of the song is how the music becomes slightly acapella after the lyrics, “You help me live and learn.” Even though it’s the lyrics of the chorus, the acapella and basic chords create emphasis on Brent’s voice so your ear really focuses on his voice. Then when it goes “I toss and turn like the sea.” the drums are so much more intense making the listener know this is the peak of the song. Sometimes, I do an intense drum session with my hands when I’m listening to that piece because it’s that intense and profound. This is my personal favorite song in terms of those progression of sounds at the peak.

Around a month ago me and my girlfriend broke up. Days later, like not even a week later this was the same calendar week, I lost my grandma due to stage 4 cancer. This song has gotten me through so many tough times. The line “if you only knew how I refuse to let you go even when you’re gone” says so much more than what I could ever say. Shinedown gets me through so much and I can’t wait to see them live in Savannah this April

Brent Smith vocals aren't like anyone I've ever heard. To personally just hear him sing. He's raw talent just his voice is AMAZING. Used to be in another band that didn't go anywhere so he went to become a studio musician sing for bands that didn't have a singer and that's where the original bass player Brad found each other was in the studio and created the original Shinedown.... Those four guys could send chills up and down your spine when they performed. The privilege of meeting these guys and getting to know these guys as they were passing out the first demos after the opening for Saliva. I have a ton of memorabilia cuz I've seen them every time they performed in a close by area. Even never seen them I suggest buy tickets and go. you won't be disappointed! #Shinedown

I confess that one of the multiple reasons why I enjoy listening to multiple songs by Shinedown is that the band is able to create both love songs and songs touching on other themes of life with heart-string pulling and captivating emotion. I have been previously familiar with this song for multiple years because the song eventually grew on me after a certain amount of times hearing it on an Orlando Florida radio station around the 2009 timeframe (the area I was living in at the time). At least part of this meaningful and mesmerizing love song appears to be about someone sharing about missing another person more than they know and how that person's memory stays on their mind a great deal. I intend to enjoy the next Shinedown concert I go to regardless if this song If You Only Knew is played at the concert, however I admit that I hope that this is one of their songs that is featured on their concert song.

It's 2020 almost seven years ago my children's mother took my kids and left state, six years before that her and I had a bad break up, my kids were there only thing that made me feel not so broken, her and I separating was the most grief I'd ever experienced, until she took the kids and left, I literally spent the first three years staring out the sliding glass door watching the sun set and biting holes through my cheek trying to fight my tears, but nothing could stop those tears from falling, every day for three years straight, that's 1,095 days and that's not counting the following years when there were days I wasn't breaking down, but still having days of the most intense grief I'd never wish upon another human. In today's world it's hard enough to get buy, try making a living while saving every penny possible to make it back to your babies (moving state isn't cheap or easy when you're doing it without any help) who meant more to you then the heart beating in your chest, I at one point missed them so bad and was so discouraged that I was never going to see them again I hung myself, I was cut down and wasn't breathing, no one knew how long I was gone and I don't remember much except knowing I was alone when I realized I was literally killing myself as my vision faded and I blacked out, but I could hear my son's voice still asking me with his little voice breaking and in tears "when can I come home" it happened to be 4am when I woke up in the hospital. After that I let myself cry, I've fought through countless tears and worked harder than anyone I've ever met and almost seven years later I'm here, I made, my baby girl doesn't remember me and my son and I are talking. This song is for them and their mother. She never really understood and thought I could just move on, that's why these lyrics are so dead on for me "if you only knew" I never really told her how bad it all hurt and I'm still reliving so much of it. So to anyone who takes the time to read this who's in grief and relates, you're not alone, never give up and never back down if you know in your heart it's right.
