I build and demonstrate my version of a shingle shake jig. I learned a lot on this video. Version 2 of the jig will be coming out soon. The shingles turned out great. the sawdust or lack of sawdust was not what I expected. Watch and see the problems that I encounter.
Thank you for watching the video and I hope you enjoyed the video. If you wouldn't mind would you subscribe to the channel.

Nice one Jerry, you've answered my chicken bedding problem 😄 just put a few scraps on the mill and mill the other way and produce bedding 😄 to be honest though bud, I too have thought about a jig for shingles. Over here in the UK, shingles aren't used too much but I want to be different 😁 hope your method works as I'll adopt it too.

I reworked the jig. It does cut much better. Your DRO will make it much easier if you build one. Thanks for watching and commenting buddy.

With the type of mill you have Jerry, the ingunuity and approach to your jobs and projects are amazing. My husband says to make a smaller mill work like an expensive mill is very hard to do. A person will have to do a lot of mental gymnastics before he starts a job in order to have great products and outcomes. He just admires your genius approach.

Compare sawdust, which is cut across the growth fibers (whether cross cut or rip), to what comes out of a hand plane, which is cut parallel with the fibers. Turning your blanks 90 degrees will solve your problem. All in all another good video. Dave
@BigelowWoodcraft
@BigelowWoodcraft 2 года назад
That's the best way I've heard it described. Thanks I never thought of it that way, Dave. It will always be stringy regardless of angle or set. Version 2 I turned it 90 degrees and it worked great. That comes out Friday. Thanks for watching and the wisdom.

had the idea of sawing them in this direction too. Interesting to see that it creates these shaving. I think a 15 degree angle would solve it and still get you relatively nice surface finish. How was the surface by the way?
@BigelowWoodcraft
@BigelowWoodcraft Год назад
Going this direction was a no go but going the correct direction cut great and the finish was good.

You're right about the siding jig. Just rip a board about an inch wide to the desired height, add a piece to keep it from going too far under like you did with the shingle jig and you've got it. Now, the only thing I/we(brother and I) found was that if the cant is long and thick it is going to be heavy for one guy to handle getting the jig under and back out. Just give that some consideration if you are going to be milling solo. You've made bedding. Dry it and sell it to people with rabbits, chickens, etc. No charge for the financial consultation. 🙂 I'm surprised the blade didn't come off. My luck it would have and there go a few teeth. Have a good day.

Could a guy just do the hole can't at one time and cut the shingle out of the long stock? 🤔
@BigelowWoodcraft
@BigelowWoodcraft Год назад
I had a guy mention this. I have not tried it yet. Cut it like siding then cut the shingles on a chop saw. Only thing doing it this way would be the grain going 90 degrees to the slope of the roof.

@JerryBomay didn't think of that... well, I'm going to try it this week on my bandsaw mill. My channel is mostly about chainsaw milling, so I rarely film my bandsaw mill. IL let you knownhow it works out. Of course, only time would tell with how the shingles hold up. Nice channel, I subscribed, sir!

Great video. I had this on my mind for a few days now. My plan is to lock down a 4/4 board with a 1x1 attached to the left side and and have 1x1's every 20 inches to form a pocket for the cants. Only drawback is I'll have to place a 3/8's jig under each individual block. Basically mimicking the wood mizer jig minus the $1500. When you mill with a chainsaw the chain is filed to 10 degrees if not it throws spaghetti.
@BigelowWoodcraft
@BigelowWoodcraft 2 года назад
That's a great idea. I have version 2 coming out Friday. Version 2 worked great. Similar to what you're talking about. I've used a ripper chain. After using the Alaska mill that was my determining factor to buy a mill lol. Let me know how your shingle jig works out. thanks for commenting.

The angle of your blade in relationship to the cut would produces curly shaving. Great video, fun watch this morning.
@BigelowWoodcraft
@BigelowWoodcraft 2 года назад
I'm not sure if that's the case. I tried a different blade with a different angle and it didn't change. My thought is the cell structure that runs vertically causes this and maybe no way to avoid unless turned 90 degrees? I did solve the problem. You'll have to watch the next video.
@geraldbomay2488
@geraldbomay2488 2 года назад
@@BigelowWoodcraft You are cutting more with the cell or growth ring and along the cell instead of cutting accross the cell. Cutting at no angle of the cells or rings, it will not curl the wood. If I remember correctly, shingles are typically in the oppisit direction and for those reasons, no curling shavings, reducing cloging and excess wood shavings. I hope this makes sense, I am sure you have figured it out by know. Keep on mastering the Woodsman's proffession, I like all that you are doing, the small mistakes are some of the best parts of your videos.❤
@BigelowWoodcraft
@BigelowWoodcraft 2 года назад
Actual shingles are always cut length wise just 90 degrees to the way my blade was entering. That keeps the shingles from breaking. With a chainsaw ripping chain is 10 degrees and I still get a stringy mess. After experimenting with a couple of different angles I got the same problem. I wanted to know if that would help... It didn't. Yup going the direction I was going isn't going to work. Version 2 solved the problem. It comes out Friday.

Mornin Jer , I think you get a better finish cutting with the grain like you did. Thought you’d probably try cutting with the doors open. Those ribbon chips will burn like crazy in the morning in a conventional wood stove. Makes for quick BTUs. Have a great day !
