You are the best teacher and humble, the world need people like you,, God bless you my friend,,thankful,, I don’t need to learn to be the fastest roofer,, I need to learn to do right,,!
Hey Eric thanks from me and my family. I did my last roof and it took me a month! These tips are plenty good. Me and my square slow things down but keep things straight. I doing my roof again but this time in a week using your tricks. Ottawa Canada.
Thanks for the great lessons, i am a building inspector and now I really appreciate the work and skill level of roofers 10 times more, you're a great ambassador for the trade.
great detail Eric. Thanks for all the information you put out. Its been 25 years since I put on a roof and I'm getting ready to do a couple of them this year. Thanks again.
Hi Eric Thanks for the great video. I really learned a lot from you and Nacho. You have a very good way of teaching people. Your explanation is very clear and I can tell that you are an experienced roofer. I'm grateful for the time you took to film this and explain everything.
good stuff man... nice that u are showing people how to do stuff and that was very cool of u to help that lady out... dont listen to the hater comments...
I think is funny ,to see comments about not painting the flashings before I install them, the reason I don't do it is because sometimes I use roof cement underneath the shingles around the flashing , if I paint them before, the paint might prevent the roof cement from sticking to the flashing properly, the way I do it , the paint fades on the shingle after a couple of weeks because the dirt and dust make it disappear for the shingle.
yes, you're completely right, pipe flashing should be painted after roofing is completed ,maybe it looks better if you do it before, but you have to consider that tar should be bonding to metal instead of paint.
I hate to tell you but you applied the starter role incorrectly! You're supposed to cut off the three tabs reverse the shingle around so the tar strip is to the outer edge nail it down then when you put your first course on top of the tar Strip that's on the Leading Edge holds the three tabs down!
love the comments from all the pros who say it must be done this way!! roofing just like most building trades is not black n white!! there are many different techniques and as long as it's water tight! it's all right
@@shawnshaffer7408 Sure, that's true, but there are codes to follow. If someone watches and does a job, they might get a fine or have to tear it out. Not all those pros are being know-it-alls. They are sometimes trying to help.
Eric - I commend you for helping this family like you did! I am self employed as a handyman (not super wealthy rich but earn my living) and helped an elderly woman with rotted out soffits / trim on her house. Animals were getting into attic space - I replaced/repaired house rotted trim and trapped raccoons in attic. I didn't charge her for labor - she had materials given to her by somebody else. I found your video in search of learning about the starting shingle - I bought a roll of starter strip 12" wide 30 feet long that has adhesive on both sides. I'm wondering if you know of this type starting material - I have yet to find a roofer video using it. I'm thinking it is better than starting shingle method traditionally done (as you show in this video). I enjoyed your video - I'm not much on roofing technology. 😁👍
I'm a framer and see roofing all the time I tried it one time but took a job for myself to get extra money for my family and all I can say is I respect roofers it's a hard job on your body I'm feeling it I'm only doing ten square man body is killing me
Thanks Eric, I really like your videos man. I just built my own solid roof attached patio cover here in San Bernadino county. So i specifically wanted to know california codes. Your videos helped me out a bunch man! Plus I enjoy your style brotha! Cheers!
I like the big nail line pattern of these shingles, most have a single line that is very close to the exposure point of the shingle... as a professional roofer in an area with real variety of weather I would say he did a pretty darn good job for the market he is in.....
Sorry If I can't reply to all the comments ..but I read them all and I really appreciate them ...good or bad ...I really learn a lot from you viewers also ! Thank you very much for watching !! Greetings ! Eric Garcia
Hey Garcia. Just watching your video to see , learn and learn again. Maybe you are not the the best, but as far as I am watching youtube DIY or some work done by many guys, you are one honest hardworking dissent guy and that's what most people love. I am telling you this from my own experiences. Do not pay attention to the commens full of sarcastic questions. Keep doing what you doing the best.
hahahahahaha , thanks for watching , by the way , the word perfection does NOT exist , everyone has different opinions and I take them as an advice. thanks for watching sir . Eric
read the comment Mihael Zimmerman, I had a limited budget on this roof, I gave some of my free time to get this job done for this family , believe me I was leaking all over the house, so . I know what kind of starter to use, but when the budged is limited or I would say , no budget at all , you have to become creative and come up with a decent installation. I bet you any money that roof will stay there for the next 30 years , starter has nothing to do with the shingles sir . have a nice day Eric.
I agree the starter course has nothing to do with the shingles, it's so when the water hits the end shingles it doesn't go between the singles!..... and also to help to hold them down with the strips of tar on The first course.
Roofing Solutions By Eric Garcia Why are you shingling a flat roof like that? Isn't it the slower the water sheds off the roof the more time the shingles are susceptible to damage I just watched a video where the pitch on the roof at least should be 2/12
Awesome Sir you made that woman so happy i wish I can afford you to do my roof on my trailer it's leaking pretty bad got lots bad wood on the roof but i can't afford anybody im doing it myself but ran out of everything for the roof so i lose it has to keep leaking i can't afford shingles and OSB sheathing it cost to much money for all that it cost me 18000.00 dollars to finish my roof
Thank you Mr Garcia , tus videos me están ayudando demasiado. Estoy trabajando en mi techo y tu experiencia la mejor . Y no le aga caso a los envidiosos . La delante eres chingon.
First I take a full shingle lay it then I take my next shingle cut of 6’ tab then take my next shingle and cut a 12’ tab then it all becomes a book 5 step start book.
Adr1an110 Thank you Adrian...sometimes I run across people that need help , I don't mind, back in 2000 to 2004 I did roof for a TV show that was called ...Xtreme Makeover Home Edition , but back then cells didn't have cameras to record, i only got pics from those shows.
Also. If you use 3 tabs for starts strips. You should lower your 3 tabs and cut off the 3 tabs leaving the black seal on the out side the edge so your shingle can adhere to the starts black seal with the shingle black seal. The reason is becuase the starter and shingle need to bond together so you won't have lift on the first rowshingles due to higher winds.
Looks like a low pitch roof. Would you lower the exposure to about 5 1/4 inches instead of 5 1/2 or 5 5/8 inches? Those architectureal shingles creates ponding on low pitch roofs
Like it. So you just cut out a few books at a time? And follow each book till roof is done? And no chalk lines across the roof? Just asking? Thank you.
Do you have a video or know of a video where they show how to do a woven valley where the shingles run N to S and E to W on a gable roof? This is with 3 tab shingles. Awesome video. Thank you very much.
Nice video. Learned some things. The camera was just a little confusing because it didn't always stay focused on the work being done. Thanks. Hopefully you keep making the videos!
I'm not a roofer but I am trying to do my own roof. At 7:01 minutes it shows putting down the first row of shingles on top of the starter strip. There is a nail head under the gap between shingles. Won't water enter the roof around the nail head?
Thanks for the tips for doing my roof, I will be doing the underlay in the morning and then using a similar architectural shingle. Ignore the rude comments, they are either from self righteous know-it-all roofers or people who frankly lack the balls to learn from your videos and undertake this type of project on their own. Keep up the good work and continue posting!!
Hi Eric, thanks for the video. I am planning to put new shingles over the existing roof, what are pros and cons by not removing the damaged shingles due to recent hail storm. The roof right now is 20 years old. By not removing the old ones, I can say( just guessing, I have no experience) pros: less work, less trash, more saving, more stable , water leak chances are less due to double layer. cons: more weight on the roof. what do you all suggest ?
How did you shingle under the AC unit? Or do you leave the old under there and tie it into the new the best you can or do you unhook the unit and move it over and then move it back when the new shingles are in?"
bluebird5100 as you know move the ac unit ..cuz more money ..sometimes the house owner dont want pay people normally go around with the new shingles ..
i am a fan of your videos but i have a question about your starter pieces. does the company that made the shingles allow 6" or 7.5" step? or does the packaging tell you otherwise? alot of the full tab shingles in canada require 10" is my reason for asking
Ya nail the piss out of the starter down low so the first course edge is next to nails all the way across...leak, leak, leak, leak. I use tackers on the top of the starter pieces because the first course nails hold it down
great video... who ever you are, you have a good hand that's for sure.the ironic thing is that your helper or who ever he is..... showing the true face of most of roofers out there.... on a cheap deal. its competitive, deals are cheap.... time is gold.I seen it all... hardwood installers for $1.20 (Canadian) per sq.ft.... nailing every third row....roofers, with 12 years warranty, with 2 or 3 nails per line on average....remember, you get what you pay for. no miracle deals anywhere.pay good, the guys will take their time to finish properly.pay cheap, the guys are on the clock..... then wonder how the hell did they do it so fast....chears
If I were rich I would fly you & your crew to Indiana to put a new roof on my house, feed you & shelter you all while doing the job. I can tell you are careful doing your job & doing it right. I wished everyone cared about their finished jobs as you sir. My dad always said you do your job right because your name is on the line. Though I will never put a roof on a house, at least when the time comes for me to have a new roof or my mother, I can observe the workers & make sure they are doing it right! Thank you-Thank you- Gracias
Hello Eric I appreciate your videos and find them informative. You guys know know your stuff! A quick question here. Is there any way to extend the life of asphalt shingles without applying that crappy tar based or the elastomeric (thick paint) sealer you brush in? I'm actually considering spraying my shingles with exterior paint. I only need for them to last maybe a yr. Right now I have no leaks but they've been on my roof for 20 yrs. and are showing signs of deterioration (mainly drying and and occasional flip ups) They have held up better than I expected. I'm saving my $ for a metal roof. A reply is appreciated and thanks again for the videos
+Mark Langston Please , don't do it what is going to happen is this.... The paint is going to sealed where the shingle overlaps the shingle on the bottom ...and eventually the joint on the side will brake the paint ...then water is going to get trapped inside the shingle and then you will have many leaks. I just did a roof like that ...the owner applied a roof coating over the shingles and created many leaks ...Please don't do it ...it's better to replace the damaged shingles ...if they look old Remember ...you still have another piece of the bottom shingle underneath and there is a felt underlayment protecting the roof ...if they look old but not leaking ...then you still have at least another 3 to 4 years of life or more ...the top look it's a just a warning but you have 2 membranes under . Good luck.
I roof really similar to how you roof. I am very curious tho. have you ever hand nailed? and if u were roofing ur house what method would u use the nail gun or a hammer. I use both altho for precision I would never roof my on house with a nail gun and only with a hammer. how long have u been roofing cause yes u are a very good roofer....
good start up (I normally do it much different/ easier). However, never put 2 nails in a shingle always try a minimum of 3. And when your close to the edge put 2 on the white line and 1 on the upper left close to the edge of the house. The shingle needs that support especially when there are strong winds.. Great job other than that! thumbs up
