Shipwreck Sisters of Lake Superior one vanished the other broke in half in twin disasters

Sister ships that Lake Superior destroyed in her ice water rage. These disasters took place within 60 miles of one another and within two and one half years of one another. One boat carrying grain simply vanished, the other carrying iron ore broke in two in front of the horrified crews of four other freighters. Although they are different tales in shipwreck lore, the vessels were constructed in the same shipyard and launched just 11 months apart and were sisters in life and then in death. Their wrecks cost the lives of 41 people most of whom never had their bodies recovered and some are still entombed in the wreckage deep in the darkness of Lake Superior. Included here is the story of James True, and Tige, the ship's dog.
Although this video is marked as being not for kids, and I normally say there is nothing in it that kids cannot view- some of this story may cause nightmares in young kids, and some adults. Please watch the video and decide for yourself.

Several blocks of the Toronto waterfront contains wrecks of 19th century lakers. (Front Street was originally the waterfront! ... long way from the lake now. So was Fort York.) It was originally mosty wetland and the hulks stabilized the land fill. The CN Tower probably goes right down a smoke stack.

There was a similar story at the entrance to San Francisco Bay. Sister tankers, both built in San Francisco, went aground just outside of the Golden Gate, ten years apart. One was the Lyman Stewart and her sister Frank Buck. As the story goes, their grounding, and death, was the same distance apart as was the distance between them when they were built... Great true story!!!

Wes, you may be able to spin an interesting story about some lake boats that were pressed into North Atlantic convoys when shipping losses were horrendous and desperate things were done. The outcome, as you might image wasn't necessarily a good one.
@authorwes

I did exactly that in my book "World War II & the Great Lakes"

@@authorwes I will get hold of one!. Thanks! I guessed that you'd have concentrated on the US war effort in your books but maybe not. The Canadian Lakes yards were frantically mass producing Corvettes, Algerines and Bangors as escorts while the US side was still peacefully going about their business. The desperation of the Battle of the Atlantic forced those poor Lakers to sail to their fate on the big, salty waves.

ok. so it was probably 12:12, the time of the first ship because it was 11/11/1919. it's always weirdness like that. just saying.........thought that was one of those things, but i am a weirdo about stuff, sometimes it seems like of course it would happen that way...

I caught that as well. Ironically, I sit here in May 2023 looking at the video with a book to my side that arrived just yesterday. The book is "The Inland Steel Fleet 1911-1998". What a coincidence! I recall the Joseph L. Block went into service when I was in high school and just before I went to work at the Indiana Harbor Works in the 1970's, whereas the Joseph Block was a first half of the 20'th century ship.

The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down Of the big lake they called Gitche Gumee The lake, it is said, never gives up her dead When the skies of November turn gloomy That Southeastern end of Superior is just nasty. With the deepest part being 40 miles North of Munising. With an unobstructed fetch from Devils Rock and Split Rock to WhiteFish Bay, those waves must have been huge. So strange to see the Duluth Ship Canal without the Fog Horn and Light House on the breakwaters.
