Zeno is considered to be the founder of Stoicism, and his story of founding stoicism is a fascinating one. Zeno was born in Citium, which is a city in modern day Cyprus. He was a merchant and born into a wealthy family. One day, he was on a voyage, sailing across the Mediterranean sea, to the city of Piraeus, in order to sell his goods over there. But, on the way, he faced a shipwreck. He lost all of his wealth, property and everything that he had. He was barely able to make it to the shore of Athens in Greece. He was very impressed by the philosophy of Socrates, and dedicated his life to philosophy. Around 300 CE, Zeno started teaching his own philosophical ideas. He later founded his own school of thought, which was called “Stoicism”. The name “Stoicism” was taken from the words “Stoa Poikile”, which was the place where Zeno would often give his lectures.
