Of all the Stoics, Zeno has one of the most fascinating stories of discovering philosophy.
On a voyage between Phoenicia and Peiraeus, his ship sank along with its cargo. He ended up in Athens, and while visiting a bookstore he was introduced to the philosophy of Socrates and, later, an Athenian philosopher named Crates. These influences drastically changed the course of his life, leading him to develop the thinking and principles that we now know as Stoicism. According to the ancient biographer Diogenes Laertius, Zeno joked, “Now that I’ve suffered shipwreck, I’m on a good journey,” or according to another account, “You’ve done well, Fortune, driving me thus to philosophy,” he reportedly said.
Zeno began his teaching at the Stoa Poikile which was located at the Ancient Agora of Athens. This is the famous porch that Stoicism was named after that you probably remember briefly mentioned in your high school or college philosophy class. But the name wasn’t always that-in fact, initially his disciples were called Zenonians but only later they came to be known as Stoics.
Of course, Stoicism has developed since Zeno first outlined the philosophy but at the core of it, the message is the same. As he put it, “Happiness is a good flow of life.” How is it to be achieved? Peace of mind that comes from living a life of virtue in accordance with reason and nature.

Everyone who get's into Stoicism knows Marcus Aurelius, Seneca and Epictetus - BUT it is just as important to read and learn about other stoic philosophers as well, just as Zeno or Musonius Rufus or others. Thanks Ryan for providing these insightful quotes of the founder of stoicism!:)

Absolutely.. mental fortitude is built during life's difficulties so embrace it and learn from the adversity.

Everyone faces adversity, it is a necessary part of being alive. Only through trial do we find the strength we need. If somebody doesn't face challenges at all in their life, then they are unfortunate, they never get the chance to learn and grow. So you, still are fortunate in a way

He has some great texts. Sometimes weird to read, not as weird as Nietzsche, but Schopenhauer is a genius, who has a right-in-your-face attitude. I'm blessed to read his texts in German, I hope the translations can withstand his message.

Some great quotes there, thanks. The one about the good man not getting drunk though… 😅 It's unreasonable to entrust a sleeping or dying man with an important task. It's reasonable to entrust a good man with an important task. Therefore, a good man will neither sleep nor die. 🙃 (I hear that Arciselaus responded something like that to the Stoics but couldn't find the quote.)

It is a logical fallacy to assume that because nature produces beings that are animate and wise that it too is animate and wise. Nature gives birth to everything, even the things we don’t like. Including beings that are foolish, cowardly, unjust, and extreme. Should we also assume that nature has these qualities? When we restrict ourselves to observation and eschew assumption, we see that nature is a series of emergent systems that, while it gives rise to intelligent life, is not itself an intelligence. It is more a product of human egotism to put a human-like face and a human-like mind on nature, than it is a product of true knowledge and understanding. I don’t disagree with everything Zeno said. However, it’s worth noting that as a human Zeno, like the rest of us, is capable of being wrong about some things and right about others. You don’t have to agree with everything a philosopher says and you can still find value in many of the things that they say. After all, this is philosophy, not religion. We are honest about only having partial access to Truth, rather than claiming absolute access to Truth. All humans, even the ancients, are wrong about some things and right about others.

Not sure if you've heard the theory of 'the axis'. Basically it's that all around this period,. possibly due to more complex language, religion and philosophy had a huge change: away from gods that would serve our individual needs, to a.God (often.monotheistic) or Philosophy which discussed what was best for society or humans as a whole. Like a step in mental evolution. I love in Africa and the overwhelming feeling of society is greed and envy. I used to think it's because there was no 'renaissance' but now I think it may be that this concept of social benefit and higher virtue never arrived fully. I guess it is changing (there are some selfless people) but it still hasn't impacted society like our greek philosophers or like Jesus.
