What's happening, folks! I'm back with another Gary Numan reaction from his 1979 album The Pleasure Principle, and this time we listen to the cheekily titled "M.E.", which looks like an acronym (I mention in advance that it makes me think of "Medical Examiner") but seemingly relates to self-identity relative to others (and even more specifically, their absence and the narrator's presence in some place). In any case, join me for another striking Gary Numan tune. Cheers!

The M.E. of the title stands for mechanical engineering, a machine - every human has died, it has turned off everything else but it can't turn itself off so it sits aware and still "alive" after hundreds of years, unable to die. Classic track, fantastic sonics, cold but emotional and sampled for Basement Jaxx's track "Where's Your Head At?"

Oh wow, I picked up on the vaguest contours of that, but didn't realize it was a machine incapable of self-termination. Cheers for that tidbit, really cool to learn.

Mechanical Engineer Gary Numan Live in London 1979 is a great concert to watch on RU-vid.

Numan has stated M. E. stands for Mechanical Engineer and is sung from the standpoint of a self-autonomous maintenance ‘robot’ left for on it’s own (possibly for decades)to care for the machines after humanity has disappeared

Gary Numan is another I'm a big fan of. If you get a chance to explore his The Fury and Strange Charm albums, they will be very interesting and very rewarding!

The only thing I know of his is the Cars song. I'll be seeing him later this year opening for Ministry. So this is good timing for me.

Speaking of M.E, then Quincy M.E needs to be riffed.

Haha, I had to look this up (never heard of it before), but the timeframe looks ripe (late '70s to early/mid '80s) and the premise is intriguing (an M.E. who helps with police investigations). May need a reminder about this down the line but we'll make it happen.

@@mattsnider2667 Quincy ME was one of my favourite shows when I was really young. Jack Klugman, easily in his late 50s hanging out with 20 year old women on a boat? Count me in!

I think you can understand my harshness for later DM stuff when you realize that this (and OMD, Foxx, Ultravox) etc already set a high bar, as did DM themselves. I cannot unhear all of this stuff to compare stuffto. We were really were spoiled in Europe for years with great synth music. The US didn't really have many synth bands at all. While we had this stuff in Europe, you had Boston, KISS, etc.

Makes sense, though don't forget that pinball-machine composer! Interesting lady.

It amazes me that Depeche Mode are SO big; who’d have thought when they started with their bubblegum synth pop that they’d be lauded in years to come when compared with Numan, Human League, OMD et-al

Plus don’t forget we had Kraftwerk beating a path for so many to follow

@@thelwulfeoforlic6482 For sure, I was going to say that, but since he was talking about a dearth of American synth acts, I didn't mention it. But yeah, lots of early American house and techno artists cite Kraftwerk as a major influence.
