It was narrated from Jaabir ibn ‘Abd-Allah (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came to Makkaah, he came to the Black Stone and touched it, then he walked to the right of it and ran three times and walked four times [around the Ka’bah]. It was narrated that ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Black Stone and kissed it, then he said: “I know that you are only a stone which can neither bring benefit nor cause harm. Were it not that I had seen the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) kiss you, I would not have kissed you.” so we do it because it's sunnah, so it is not incorrect to touch and/or kiss it(unless with wrong intentions like thinking the stone itself has some power)

On the contrary, others think it's worship just because we want to kiss the stone. It's more like how people would do anything just to get a look at an ultra-rare supercar that may be passing them. Does it mean that they're worshipping it? Of course not. It's mostly because the car is very rare and expensive and is also a little more special than the others. But the same still doesn't apply to the black stone. It's a much more special stone than what most of us could think of. Thus, when we get close enough to the stone, we kiss it.
