Absolutely awesome window into life on the "farm" and the preparation for the herd to be able to graze where they want without getting into harms way! Clearly the herd is well taken care of and their behavior indicates they are treated very well and very respectfully. Thoroughly enjoyed watching this!

I feel this method of herd control needs more explanation because some people in the comments(maybe people less familiar with farm work) seem to think this is cruel and that the cows are going to be fried every time they enter a restricted area!

As a former city gal who now has some livestock and uses a chute system, I learned a tip from our rancher-friend nearby about encouraging them to move when they don't want to. If you grab their tail about a foot from the base and pull it to the side and up (terrible description, sorry -- bring the tail over toward their hip bone and forward, as if forcing them to swat a fly on their side) it's not painful but just uncomfortable enough that they'll move forward to ease the tension. Works on cows, horses, and (as I've learned personally) Tibetan yaks as well. I do recommend standing to the side and reaching through the fence panel rather than standing behind, where those animals have a very strong potential kick. That said, I've definitely been where Tom was, pushing futilely at the hind end of a stubborn animal who just didn't feel like taking one step forward... 🤣

Luke, it's got to be so satisfying to see these cattle thriving at Mapperton, and to have such a great team overseeing their progress. Well done Tom and well done Luke for being the driving force behind rewilding Mapperton. Julie did well not to freak out and to try out the cow tracker.

I’m sorry I missed the live commentary but I love the no fence for the cows. Sort of like the invisible fence for your pets. They sure love to tease Julie ☺️. The cows look like the long horns in America, I know they’re not but so similar in looks to me. Lucky he didn’t end up getting kicked by the cow, she sure us mellow. She has such a cute face !

Sorry but I was laughing so hard, even funnier the second time 🤣. And Julie’s WHAT, I knew what was coming lol. You just hung a electric fence cowbell on lol. It was very hot and humid in Michigan my sister got zapped by the horse fence. Omg she got so mad at me for laughing at her. Well I did tell her wear glove and be careful opening the gate. Get your hand too far back on the handle you get a little zap. She said I think I’m having a heart attack me your fine you just got shocked. My sister has no tolerance for pain lol. 🇺🇸

You folks should look up what we in the USA call a cattle squeeze. It's the same premise as you have but to me the squeeze is much easier to work with. Not so many sliding doors just one handle. I was absolutely blown away when I thought you could use electricity on the animal. Here there is absolutely no way that we are allowed to do that.

Sounds like the same concept of those dog collars used with 'invisible fences.' Dog would get a bit of a jolt when approaching too close to the fence boundary.

it works like an electric fence,and after a while the cows will learn which are the no-go areas and wont get shocked at all.

Cows are really not that scary (unless you had an unfortunate experience) at all. They are just BIG! Once, years ago, I helped (by just standing there) a rancher move some Herefords from one pasture to another. He said 'just stand there, they won't hurt you' so I did. They stopped when I put my arms out like I was an airplane, and then I walked slowly toward them. They moved the correct way, into the other field. No big deal! Julie, you might have got a little jolt, but not electrocuted. Not enough juice for that! You all are so fun to watch!

When I decided to fence an acre with wire for our 7 dogs. We opted for shock collars. First time out, my retriever mutt got out, and continued to make it to our neighbors and their chickens for several days. This might not work. Her collar is a dude. So I took it off as I walked her back to the house. Whamo!Wham!! I was shocked by the collar in my hand. Crap it hurt. Later learned that her thick fur prevented the shock from detouring her. My beagle however would try to follow her and totally scream when she hot that border.
