East coast man here. The proper way to use a saw with a circular blade is to adjust the depth to get the maximum number of teeth in the material at one time. Had you set your Milwaukee circular saw up correctly for the job, the motor would have cleared the speed square. The motor going that low is actually an advantage as it allows for the maximum possible depth of cut. But then, I wouldn’t expect a west coast man to know these things ;-)

I agree with your sentiment on an earlier video about the M12 tools. I’ve built a lot of custom furniture up to framing small structures and I’ve probably reached for my m18 a handful of times in a year for the occasional 10” lag screw. Not a lot those m12s won’t do. And yes full stairs. At some point when you’re sitting there reflecting on life with friends, stairs become the best seat in the house.

I drilled 3 holes 5" deep in concrete with the m12 hammer drill with the big 4.0 battery i was really impressed i leave my 18 set at home now the m12 is scary good and a must have for pro's and proho's alike

Hey Cody, a little trick for a picture frame border, whether it's an interior floor with an inlay, tile work, pavers, or a deck... Lay the field first and then cut the border of the field straight, then add the border. In this case, I would have left the start and end of the boards unfastened, screw down all planks. Cut all planks at once with a circular saw, or track saw. Lift the unfastened ends to slip in joist tape underneath. Fasten the ends, and then add the border planks. That's how this Northeaster has done it. 😉I swear I am one of the good ones.

You know there’s an adjustment to raise and lower the body from the guide but honestly a compound miter saw would be a better tool for the job.East coast man here

You should set the blade depth to just a hair beyond your workpiece thickness. therefore, thicker material cannot be cut using a speed square because the motor housing will be closer to the guide.

@@Flying81 on an east coast saw, you have this issue with the motor. West coast saws for right handed people would never have this issue with a square as a guide. I have no idea why anyone even still makes East coast saws

@@Flying81 no, incorrect. He would still be right handed on the other end of the board. Therefore the orientation would always be, from left to right, speed square - guide - blade - motor, and so the motor would never be in the way.

@@Flying81 pause the video at 11:18 and tell me how the speed square would be on the side with the motor. He’s right handed, so he’s going to hold the square with his left hand. Because the blade is on the left hand side (west coast) of the saw, the speed square sits against the guide on the blade side, not the motor side.

But the blade is on his far right side, and he can’t cross his arms to put the square on the blade side. So it’s on the motor side, and it hits the square while cross cutting.

Full length stairs 100% if it's in your budget. That always looks the best, and is most versitle. PLUS you can build in with "boxes" One large platform as the bottom, then a box on top of it, and then another box on top of it... One of the best guys on youtube, RR Builders has a great video on it. How to build deck stairs the EASY WAY. Everything is looking great, Cody!

I own the same milkwaukee saw. I place the square on the other side of the board and face the pointed part of the speed square towards myself, allowing the blade to fully clear the board before the motor hits the square.

Your putting the decking upside down . Widest part of the grain (cup) (growth rings ) goes down . Keeps the end corners from curling up

38 degrees?! Goodness, that's colder than this time last year by a couple degrees! The deck is coming along beautifully... can't say I'm surprised that wrong-handed skil-saw wasn't designed for proper work with proper tools; probably designed by an engineer with no callouses on his hands.

Having been a subscriber for around 14 years now, I know there are comments about how long these projects take, but I really want to say what a blessing it is to me. I WISH I had the time to take this much time and care in doing my projects. All of my other life makes my projects just need to be completed. Lot of wood workers like using drill drivers when woodworking, having no impacts prevents splitting of the wood generally. But on the other hand others are now using impacts for everything so it’s all becoming preference now.

Keep in mind that circular saw will tilt the opposite way as your worm drive. It comes in handy when cutting hip or valley rafters or other miter cuts… you may find one saw a better fit on certain cuts than the other, even tho it feels left handed on straight cuts.

A) re:M18- does the saw not have a depth adjustment? B) re:M18- doesn't 'waukee make left and right variants? C) shouldn't let your tape zip back in. Its hard on the retraction spring, hard on the tape itself and its hard on the rivets holding the claw.

Flex 24v inline 6 1/2 inch saw is belt driven, no issues using saw guides and has a built in dust port that really works. Can see the cutline on either side of the saw. Very accurate and quiet. Use the stacked lithium batteries. 3.5, 6, 10, or 12 ah. The designers solved a lot of issues with this saw .

I just had an issue with an M12 battery that was barely used maybe 5x (looked brand new) and wouldn't charge, read 0 volts. It was a year and a half old and they didn't want to honor the warranty because I didn't buy it at an "authorized distributor" i.e. Home Depot. It has a serial number and build date on it so they know it was only halfway through its warranty life. Total letdown.

Good sir, I have a few issues on how you finished the skirting on your porch. 1. You should have 45 the corners instead of butt joints. Plus your butt joints are not consistent on both side. One is visible from the cabin side, while the other is visible from the front. 2. While I do not know where your stairs will be going on the porch, nor you might not have decided yourself. It would have been better to try and hide the splice under the steps. You might still be doing so where you did put the splice. As for commercial guys from the Northeast carrying tools in a bucket. Their is a good reason for this, and I won't disclose it here, but feel free to dm me, and I will explain it to you. You will be impressed with the wisdom of it.

10:30 I was taught to run a circular saw so that the blade only goes 1/4-1/2" past the depth of the wood cut. You would have cleared the speed square if u lifted the blade more, instead of running it full depth. I think the reason for the shallower cut is less blade in the wood, less friction, and then less draw on the motor. sure someone will correct me if i'm wrong.

For stairs I suggest full width, maybe a bit longer tread, so if you have a bunch of people hanging out the stairs could be impromptu seating, or a riser for Group photos

As an east coast hobby carpenter I’d be using a slide saw miter box on that deck. No west coast hillbilly framing saws. But I do agree that that Milwaukee saw is flawed.

Never use boards with the pith (bullseye) in them and always make the rings "frown" so when they age they do not cup and hold water. Boards with a pith in them are a huge crack that hasn't happened yet... Act accordingly

I’m an east coast man. Milwaukee makes a left blade m18 “wormdrive style” saw. Run one at work most days. Paired with a 12 amp hour battery it runs all day. Even on a commercial scale. Still no substitute for a skil mag 77. Always found myself cutting left handed with a sidewinder.

I learned on an east coast saw and always struggled getting accurate cuts. When I got to a point where I bought my own tools the first thing I did different was get a left blade saw and I’ve never even thought about switching back! Milwaukee has an m18 fuel rear handled worm drive circular saw that is absolutely killer. Not quite as compact as the dewalt 60v saw but you’re able to use any size m18 battery with it unlike the dewalt which requires 60v batteries.

For stairs I'd think it would look nice with them on both sides so the deck looks nice and symmetric. Of course a full frontal stair like you were saying would also work but I like seeing the 'under carriage' on the wooden beams holding everything up.

Cody this may be a little extra but I think some natural stone or precast concrete steps would look quite nice in front of the cabin.

Here’s a saw suggestion from a young guy in the trades: Look into a maffell kss 50. 95% of the time it’ll replace your chop saw, table saw, circle saw and track saw. I lay wood floors for a living and I carry in 1 saw to every job and it’s the smaller version of that saw, but for doing everything, I would get the next size up or maybe even 2 sizes up.Takes some getting used to but it’s the only saw I need partnered with a jig saw on occasion. Its a bit pricey but you know those Germans are proud of there tools and it reflects in the price.

I have both and generally prefer blade on the left so I can better see the cut (as a “righty” that is). There is a strong argument for blade on the right, though. It lets the large part of the table of the saw rest on the “good” side of the cut, which makes for squarer cut ends.

Full steps look really nice, but they do add shelter for critters and anything the wind will blow in and they make it hard to clean.

I switched to milwaukee, when my lithium 18v shit out prematurely i invested in the fuel which did the same, i went to 20v dewalt and not a single issue for over 5 years now

I would do stairs in the center instead of the entire front. Reason be, if you need to back your truck or side by side up to the porch to unload items you are not limited to doing it from the side or having to carry them up the stairs. Doing a smaller stair case cuts down on maintenance of the staircase as well.

Four-step stair down to a full length 6-foot deep sundeck with 3-step stair to grade. This provides an opportunity to hide unsightly pier blocks, and match cabin porch railing with half height railing to support pots plants and then chairs to enjoy the sun and the view as well as perhaps even a fire pit.

They're a huge tripping hazard. Screws with your brain. I deliver so I see lots of porches and wrap around stairs seem to screw with the eyeline. And no handrail is also a hazard

I remember when you were a speaker at Mother Earth News Fair in Topeka, KS and you played your video about using manual tools because of all the hassles of battery-powered tools. Not that much of a hassle, I guess.

I’d respectfully suggest you only put the stairs on the right half of the deck front. That will allow for a railing on the left hand side for leaning, putting your feet up after a long days work etc. it will look more finished that way. Looks great so far, Good Luck!

94 degrees in central oregon today . I whent to Portland on the 9th and it was 102 and I drove back to bend when I got to madras the feeling of dry heat came back and I got to say I'll take the wet heat over dry heat any day .
