Great reaction! She was 15 when she sang Wicked Game. It was on a show called You Are Super, a singing competition for orphaned and disadvantaged children. If you like her stage presence and that tribal sound you should listen to Rechenka (The River) which she sang at 14. Diana was only 15 years old when she sang this song for the Russian singing contest “Ты Супер!” (“You Are Super!”) in 2018; she is now 19 and turns 20 in May. A few things contribute to the unusual effect of Diana Ankudinova’s voice. First, the majority of professionals can agree that she is a true contralto, the lowest female voice type, which is also the rarest. It’s even harder to find a true contralto than a true bass. A famous contralto is the American pop singer Cher, who many people compare Diana to (though she has said that she doesn’t particularly like Cher’s music, nor does she intend to cover it). As you can imagine, contraltos are few and far between. Diana is possibly the youngest one we know of in the world today. Some people label her as a “dramatic contralto”, a term applied to women with the deepest and darkest contralto sound. While this definition does apply to her, there would be no way to truly label her as such because it’s a term used specifically in opera, and we’ve never really heard her singing in that style.
