Every time we eat, we have a chance to boost our brain function. In medical school, we’re taught the brain is immutable, that we can’t grow new brain cells or change the brain once dysfunction or injury has occurred. Now, we know that’s just not true. The decisions we make each and every day, like what we eat, how much sleep we get, and how often we move are all steps that can dramatically shift the health of the brain for the better. And there’s so much more we can do, too.
Dr. David Perlmutter joins me on this week’s episode of The Doctor’s Farmacy to talk about an empowered approach to supporting the brain, starting with food first. Dr. Perlmutter is a board-certified neurologist and four-time New York Times best selling author. He serves on the Board of Directors and is a Fellow of the American College of Nutrition and as a member of the Editorial Board for the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease. His books include the #1 New York Times bestseller Grain Brain, The Surprising Truth About Wheat, Carbs and Sugar, with over 1 million copies in print. He is the editor of the upcoming collection The Microbiome and the Brain that will be authored by top experts in the field and will be published in 2019 by CRC Press. Dr. Perlmutter’s new book, Brain Wash, co-written with Austin Perlmutter, MD, will be published in January 2020.

Dr. Hyman is an 11-time New York Times bestselling author, family physician and international leader in the field of Functional Medicine. Fine, but no matter how much I tried my dad would not take meals on wheels, or any other type of help.he always said "we don't need it." I told him well mom would eat it. Didn't work. They ate mostly sweets. My dad could not see well enough to drive, but mom would he just told her when to stop, turn ,etc. When I brought her to my house, just feeding her regular food. She really liked oatmeal for breakfast. So it was good just eating, clothes clean, shower everyday, clean bed linens. Sometimes it was two or three showers a day. It was extremely hard, but, I would do it again . I loved her so. She changed my little butt, she totally deserved to be taken care of.

I began the Keto diet, with some intermittent fasting. I have lost 27 lbs, which puts my BMR under 23. It took me 2 1/2 months to get rid of it. I also lost 13 lbs at the same time. In May ( I think) Dr.Hyman interviewed Dr. Gabrielle Lyon and she pointed out the importance of resistance exercise and eating red meat especially as you get older in order to maintain muscle mass which will lead to a healthy old age. So glad I'm also a ground beef addict. It sure has paid off for me.

I so wish that I had a doctor like the two of you. My previous doctor would almost get angry every time I brought up the Ketogenic Diet, but he had no problem prescribing me medications with all kinds of side effects. I finally went on a strict, clean keto diet, and in 2 1/2 months I lost 44 pounds, my fasting blood sugar went from 200 to averaging between 76-83, my triglycerides dropped a ton, and my insomnia almost disappeared. I felt so much better than I had in a long time. Then, I made the mistake of going off Keto, and I am now worse off than before. I just got a new doctor and had labs done, and without even doing a follow up with me, he appears to have diagnosed me with type 2 diabetes and prescribed medications for it that I have never taken before. I am having a hard time understanding how a doctor could prescribe such garbage without saying a single word to me. On the day he prescribed me the medication, I started Keto again, and since my fasting blood sugar has dropped from 235 to 167, and that was only after three days on the diet. I am confident that eating the right saturated fats, Omega-3s, grass fed and organic meats, and a ton of broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, asparagus, bok choy, other delicious veggies, as well as my MCT's, I will lose all the weight I lost before and take control of my health. Am I wrong to think that my doctor is on the pharmaceutical industry's payroll? How do I find a doctor that cares about me and will work with me to fix my actual problems instead of masking them with deadly chemicals?

I get so frustrated with these people who continue to rely on sick care and thus give positive feedback to the entire dysfunctional system of the medical industrial complex. That's where it gets that great taste. I have actually let it sit for 3 days to enhance that flavor. and yes it works. the Flavor is Sour Dough on steroids. The Question is what does it do chemically to the dough. I eat very little regular bread. Because it Bothers my stomach when I eat a lot. It's like it isn't something enough. When I do the the thrice risen method, whether for 24 hours or 3 days it feels like a complete meal. Now Most Drs would call me nuts but you folks are smart enough to see what I'm getting at.

Thank you. I remember Awakening From Alzheimer's and this diet is a blessing. The unhealthy foods have been programmed into us to eat and then teach our children to eat that way as well. When we change the way we eat, it makes a huge difference in my family's lives. Our guts are so important! Thank you both! Thank you Dr. Hyman and Dr. Perlmutter. 🙏💚

I am in the United Kingdom and I had an MRI SCAN through my neurologist. He was rude with my results and wouldn't see me after. He sent one letter to my GP saying that there was nothing wrong with me and to tell me that everything is alright. Two days later I received a letter stating that I have white matter around the brain leading to Small Vessels Disease and when I saw my gp he said if he had an MRI scan then he would expect to see white matter at his age. He was 79 years old and I was only 52 years old I am now 57 years old. This really worried my family and myself, but was told to go onto the internet for information. I have times when my whole mind takes me out of the room and when I come back round I am speaking about something completely different to what I was talking about before my mind went, I have also lost my way not recognizing an area where I once lived and took myself to a building where my mind came back to normal, I have also woken up in the morning a couple of times not knowing where I was not even recognizing my own bedroom and at times I have been naughty throwing things then click with myself and thinking that my son is my brother and Uncle and going to hit him and call him names but I managed to stop myself which I am grateful for because I don't want to treat him or anyone else like that. I have regular memory loss my General Knowledge, faces, and names I've known for years. I am listening to your video now and you mention one side of my body (left) goes cold and numb all of the time, how do I get it sorted out because my neurologist is vile to me. My balance is terrible and energy, I sleep a lot throughout the day. My Nan had many strokes, my mother died of alzheimer's at 57 years. I have also been diagnosed with other illnesses: Motor problems throwing my head around. Diabetes 2 Athsma Functional Neurological Disorder Nerve disorder Tremors Fat in my blood Enlarged Liver Nodules x2 on each ardinal gland on the top of each kidney, this has been ignored and was each measured at 2cm each 2 years ago. Hip Dysplasia in both hips from birth. Osteoarthritis on both hips. Back Pain Acute Crystal Fluid on both knees Rheumatoid Arthritis in both knees. I am in a wheelchair I have tried Physiotherapy which has not helped at all for the functional neurological disorder only. I don't get any support apart from I have carers come in for three hours a week to help me to shower and shop occasionally and clean my home. I am taking lots of medication including MST 12 HOURLY (MORPHINE). Which doesn't help with functional neurological disorder and nerve problems. I also get locking of my fingers and hands which the gp said it is arthritis but the internet says it is something else. I wonder if you would email me please? with some advice. Warmest Wishes ❤❤

I keep reading comments on Mark interrupting too often; I used to feel the same way and then I understood that this format is not a lecture by an individual solely lecturing to an audience at a podium; it is instead, an informal discussion between two people discussing the best ways to get healthy and we are just listening in. People in discussion with each other, do interrupt with questions, comments and need for clarification, as well as a personal story or even a joke. I think this is a great format, because what one person will speak on and omit, perhaps the other will pick up on it and clarify. So, since I am just listening in, I am still gleaning from their conversation even though I am not a part of it. My two cents.

I love this program. I am so concerned about the obesity epidemic in this country. By now - if you mention it at all you are accused of fat shaming. The thing that worries me the most is the number of obese children. sigh 😔. This is not a good way for humans to live and I am sure that if people can only get over the craving carbs and sugar hump - they will begin to shed that weight. I had an extra 20 libs. - not that much I guess but it was all in my stomach as I don’t gain weight in my arms or legs (just a little) so it all goes onto my stomach and I figured into my organs. I went on the ketogenic diet and lost it. I am 76 years old and now I am hoping to avoid dementia/alzheimers. I have high LDL but I have very low triglycerides, so I am not worrying much about it and will not take statins. If only people would realize how easy it is to get on a low carb diet.

Not really…It’s called type A personality and it’s poor impulse control driven by lack of patience, attention seeking, innocent arrogance - in a way, ambition, friendly aggression - desire to dominate constantly… It’s very annoying, intrusive, interrupting, distracting, derailing-not on purpose, rude not on purpose. It’s not good even though he is innocently doing it. Very poor impulse control. Interrupting every time he takes a chance under the guise of clarifying is counterproductive. Wait until the person you are interviewing is done talking then ask for clarification etc. To me he would have given an immense amount of anxiety anticipating being interrupted constantly…yikes!!

Many experts r poor at communication. Often they use words that r not readily understood by non-experts. Moreover, many spend too much time explaining the science in HOW they got their findings and without enough emphasis on WHAT their findings r. By keeping their answers short, it generally allows the listener a better chance of understanding more. Moreover, Some of u just want the answers without the reasoning but others want the reasoning so that they can hopefully be more committed to changing their diet habits.

Why does Dr. Hyman needlessly interrupt the flow of conversation without adding value. I do know he has plenty of knowledge regarding these issues, and has spoken well on them. However, here he just sounds like a restless, fidgety (dare I say very ADHD like) adolescent trying to either put his two cents in rather redundantly, or make pointless attempts at comic relief ("expired Skittles"... really?) Sometimes you have to know when to shut up, have grace and let your friend and eminent colleague speak without flippant remarks and needless distractions that don't add anything to the equation. You're an important voice in this field, Dr. Hyman. However, you have a few bad habits that you might want to take a look at and address for future interviews. Thanks and keep up the good work spreading the much needed information regarding health and the food industry.

Prevention of those diseases which have become a every day scenario in every family. Doctor's visit has become a regular activity. Not to mention that helpless feeling we get when seeing a doctor. What they say, how they handle our illness are not convincing most of the time. But there is no way to go. We just surrender to them.
