In this episode of the Wide Awake Podcast I spoke to explorer, adventurer and public speaker, Davey Du Plessis. Two months into a solo source to sea navigation of the Amazon river Davey was ambushed and shot 4 times within the isolated jungles of Peru. The adventure turned into an intense moment to moment struggle to survive as he made his way, wounded, through the dense jungle, seeking rescue and safety.

Amazing episode, amazing guest. Did wanted him to just talk and finish his story of how he got shot, because some questions interrupted the story. I was so into it! I was like: Aah Josh, just let him talk!!! Also, he is the guest so let him share info. Don't fill in the quiet spaces for him. Give him a chance. Not meant in a negative way. I very much enjoy your work, just a thought.

I feel it's a bit sad and strange he couldn't at least re-pay them somehow. The absolute minimum would be to pay for all the gas they have spent because after all they really saved his life!! I know he mentioned the logistics, but they got to the hospital *somehow* so of course he could have bought them food or gas and they could have transported it back on the same ship.

Agreed, amazing story but lack of gratitude to those communities who helped was also interested to hear more about SAB and their role in saving his life.

I've done the Amazone River on a boat back and forward from French Guyana to Manaus and back for 6 months back in 2004. I would see kids coming from nowhere at 06:00am in tiny canoes asking for food. The boat was white and every morning the deck would be full of stange creatures like grasshopper 6 inches long etc. I don't even want to imagine been by myself hurt in there.

I'm at minute 47 right now but need to go now. Maybe it's discussed later but I wonder if the guy has done anything afterwards for the people that saved him. Can imaging that starting a go fund me with this story will raise a lot of money to help these communities.

The scary thing here is the fact that you will never know the gunmen's motives and why they would just opt to shoot dead a random stranger. Even if the motive was robbery, the callousness of the act and willingness to kill instead of just threatening and robbing. Its like being hunted by a predator and you don't know it until its too late.

@@xxxneoxxx 😜 just the female protection coming out here. Josh is a recovered addict and this man appeared to be belittling him when he said that the difficulties he put his family through were somehow for less of a reason than he, who played around on a river in a jungle by choice without preparation.

Hi there Joshua, thanks for another great interview. You really do choose interesting people to talk to. I just want to make a small comment. Could you perhaps try to stop completing sentences of the people you are interviewing. Let them find the words they want to use, even if it takes a bit longer and your brain has already come up with what you feel is the correct. word. Otherwise, great work dude. Keep it up.

You make a good point. I don't understand why people like this feel so compelled to indoctrinate everyone else into their way of life. If what you're promoting makes sense you shouldn't have to go to such lengths to get people to listen. It's good that's he's not vandalizing pieces of art, blocking traffic, etc like some people do but it's kind of the same mentality. Still a great story though
