I've been testing a new helmet over the last few months and I am ready to give my full review on it. So here is my take on the Shoei Hornet X2, it is an awesome helmet, somethings I think are perfect and there is some room for improvement as well.
For one this helmet is super aerodynamic but, the downside is that it is a fairly heavy helmet. Check out the video for the rest of the features, stats and of course my opinion on this helmet.
Here are the links to the Shoei and the Bell MX9 that I mentioned:

I've been riding both street and dirt for 52 yrs and am 70 yo now. Avg per year is 4,000 mi dirt and 20,000 mi street. Been using the Shoei Hornet for 4 yrs now, both street and dirt, best helmet ever! The switch from Moto style with goggles to the X2 for dirt riding was the quiet factor on long fast dirt rides across the deserts. For street I use the X2 for the quiet and sun visor when riding into the rising or setting sun! Another fav feature on the X2 is the face shield does not Rattle in any position or at any speed! Ride On!!!

My two cents: Now that I have a year and 15k miles wearing my X2 I will say this; the face shield detents are far better and it is slightly quieter than my old XD-4 (4 years, 58K miles). However, the Arai was way more comfortable, easier to get my fit correct and was better at anti-fogging. (I do not use a Pin-Loc with my X2 because I ride a lot at night and my old-man eyes don't like it.) Bottom line is I used to roll 10-12 hour days in the Arai and only took it off for a lunch or snack stop. Now, I have to get the Shoei off my head every 2-3 hours. These are just my own experiences and I am not trying to be some kind of Aria fanboy. Great review Tim!

Had many helmets over the years and the Shoei is a very nice helmet. I've only had a couple of Shoei helmets and a couple of Arai helmets because of the price. I've always purchased nice helmets but if you can afford a quality helmet I say go with the Shoei, fits me a little better than the Arai. Bought mine about 8 months ago and just got back from a 1000 mile road trip, comfortable all the way. Great review, thanks.

Thanks for the detailed review! I just picked one of these up last week. Although I wont be trying it out here in Canada for another few months : ( I am coming from the Klim Krios - buyer beware on the Klim Krios!!!. The visor assembly is very cheap and the hinge gear wears prematurely causing the visor to not stay in place and flop in the wind. Very awful design. In fact I had to send back to Klim twice for warranty and all they did was replace visor..which would last only a month before failing again. I gave up on that helmet after only one summer. Very happy so far with the Shoei!! It does fit small , I am usually a small in adventure & motocross and Id to go up to a medium. Shoei does offer a lot of options with regard to cheek pad sizes to accommodate ( bought separately )

@@mitchellsteele1468 Poor as compared to my other modular helmets. (HJC RPHA 90S, Shoei Neotec 2, Shoei GT Air) A true DS helmet like my HJC DSX1 has 5 or 10 times the ventilation as the Hornet X2. The Hornet is more of a adventure helmet more ment for use on the highway IMHO. It is a nice helmet but if you live in a hot climate I would think it would get quite warm. It would help if a person didn't put the air diffuser in under your chin and left that open as the vents on the helmet are quite small.

Quality remains when price is forgotten. I personally always wear Arai and Shoei. Currently the XD4 and GT Air. They fit me best AND it lasts many years. As a daily rider, I get around 4-5 years of use. Schuberth is also good too. It lasts like 5 yrs too.

I've owned several Shoei lids over the years (currently have a GT Air II) and the number one thing I like about them besides general comfort is the fact that I can easily get my glasses on inside the helmet. I see you can as well and I'm assuming that since you didn't mention otherwise, the helmet is comfy with glasses on. For someone like me that needs prescription glasses, that is an absolute must. I like what you said and I think I will probably go with what I know and get the Hornet X2 of the Arai XD-4. What are you using for a Bluetooth comm device? Will you mount a GoPro on the chin?

I prefer modular helmets, and for the price the Scorpion AT-950 can't be beat. Super comfy, not overly heavy, great ventilation, works with sunglasses (not needed though) and goggles, very aerodynamic. Shield optics are correct. Visor and peak removal is super easy. Nice review Time, seemed to cover all the points. I think from my position, I'd have to take your assessment of it's level of aerodynamic performance with a grain of salt. Not slighting your opinion, but considering most of your riding is behind a wind screen, I don't think it's a complete assessment. As a sport bike rider, my upper torso, and certainly my helmet are fully exposed to the force of the wind. I think the riding conditions between the two types of bikes, ADV vs Sportbike are enough to give a little less weight to that part. Enjoy your time on the Baja peninsula.
@FTAAdventures
@FTAAdventures 4 года назад
Thanks Bill. I totally get what you are saying, I have stood up on the bike a few times at speed and it certainly isn't as aerodynamic as a regular full face would be but compared to other adventure style helmets it is far sleeker than others. Would not be an ideal helmet for a sport bike though. I rode a Ducati monster with the Arai XD4 and it almost ripped my head off haha, would not recommend that. Cheers

My Arai DX4 info stated the lid is worn out after five years or 70k km, whichever comes first. I've got 44k km on it in one year and I'll bet your distances are longer. Arai states the warranty is good for the first user only for five years from the date of purchase (keep the bill). They give a two year max period from the date of manufacture to the date of purchase and after that, it starts running down the warranty period, sold or not. Because I'm a high mileage guy, I look for lids already into the warranty period and therefore on sale, at motorcycle show vendors, etc. I got my current lid for 1/3 off, with 4 months of the warranty period run down already. I assume there is non-visible wear and tear on the lid, such as compression of the foam, accidental drops, so I stay within the warranty parameters for personal wear, regardless of how good the lid looks.
@jimsnow8004

What happened to your AT950? When you switched to the Bell, I didn't notice you mention anything about the Scorpion and why you switched. Also i noticed both the helmets you've had since are not modular. I recently found there are a few new ADV style modular helmets in the price range of the Scorpion by Nexx and Fly, but haven't been able to find any reviews on them yet. Anyway, I suppose my real question is what are your thoughts on modular helmets, is it worth the extra weight, noise, and alleged reduced safety to be able to flip up the chinbar? Or is it better to just take the damn thing off for a minute? Thanks for all that you do, I really enjoy your channel and find it truly inspiring.
@orangelion03
@orangelion03 4 года назад
What "wore out" on your MX-9? Padding? Detents? The liners and cheek pads of the Bell can be replaced for $40 so you if you wear it a lot , you can prolong that "new helmet smell" until it expires =) One thing you can do with the MX-9 you can't do with the Hornet is wear goggles and still use the visor. I do like that the peak on the Hornet is easily removable, makes it even more aerodynamic and quiet on long slab sections...other ADV helmet manufacturers should take note. I own three Shoei RF-1200s, several Bells, and four Scorpions. As much as I appreciate that little "extra" you feel with Shoei, I will replace my soon to expire MX-9 ADV with another one.

@FTAAdventures
@FTAAdventures 4 года назад
It depends on the helmet and your windshield. It doesn't bother me at all, and I love the benefits of touring with this style helmet so it would be hard for me to go without it. The way it blocks the sun glare is super valuable to me, and I have a tall windscreen so I barely feel it, even on really long days. Most of these helmets the visor can be removed for highway stretches and put back on when needed.

@CallsItLikeISeizeIts 4 года назад
I use whatever sunglasses are Army approved for wear. They are considered protective eyewear and while blocking sun is what any sun glass will do, blocking sun and having protection from objects hitting eyewear at high speed is important, Oakley and wily-x come to mind. FTA A I get the cheap gas station stuff, but for riding w/visor up, invest8ng in quality eyewear could be a literal eye saver. I have seen some definite eye saves from eyewear, both in everyday life and deployed. Trace it all the way back to Gargolyes and shotgun pellet protection. If you take care of them, they will last 4 ever, I still,have plenty left over from Army days ( they kept issuing new pairs like candy, but I have only lost some, never had any damaged significantly, so have a lifetime supply in locker and have had them last 15 years). I was in when Gargoyles were first issued. Before that, no sunglasses approved for wear. Still resisted (Terminators Glasses, Hollywood ) but one day, a Ranger Sgt ordered his men to, take off their “sunglasses” on a grenade range, and they did. Shortly afterward, there was an incident involving a grenade and there were significant eye loss and injury. After that, “sunglasses” were changed to “protective eyewear” and wear was mandatory on ranges after that.Now it is rare to see one without them. Many many eyes have been saved in the military by wearing “sunglasses” that meet the MILSTD for protection (There is a difference between the two, all are sunglasses, not all have protective qualities). That’s in day to day life and especially in combat. These are well known brands commercially available to everyone and are not Mil only. It is now habit and I am rarely without eye pro, tinted or clears anytime I walkout of house. . You pay more , but you are paying for eye protection, not from sun, but from projectiles/fragments hitting lenses at high speeds in combat, but also low speed falls/impacts with objects etc hitting face/eyes. Highly recommend if you are concerned with protection other than sun. Service Members are not wearing sunglasses, but actual tested , approved and proven eye protection, and that’s what they really wearing. If Military says it’s approved to wear as Eye Protection (eye pro), it’s good to go. You can probably google examples of instances of saved eyes/damaged eye pro; Tens of thousands of saved eyes later.........

Same here. I just returned from my local dealer really wanting to get the LS2 but it does not fit me! I walked around in the store for half an hour and it was too tight on the fore head. I went back and forth from an L to XL! Great review Tim as always.

I have an arai xd4, and the exo 950, the xd4 is a great helmet especially with glasses, very well ventilated for a street helmet. the exo is less well ventilated with the visor closed but with the visor open and the sun shade down its about the same and my eyes are still protected. the exo is heavier, but better in the winter with less fogging and less unwanted ventilation. If i don't get back home before dark i don't have to change shields with the exo and can flip up the whole face assembly for a quick drink or snack ( a great plus with the glasses, helmet removal is complicated bc, i have to find a level surface to lay my glasses on before i can remove my helmet). If i had one helmet, the exo totally, plus its half the price. btw i can wear it on sport bikes too, the arai's adjustable peak is pushed down by the wind while in a aggressive riding position blocking vision,the exo peak is caught a bit by wind but, doesn't obscure my vision. removing the peak is a bit of a pain with either one.

I did try the Scorpion, I liked the modular aspect of it, it was pretty heavy though but an awesome option. I think my head shape is more ovalish. I think the Shoei is considered more round but it works and fits me well.

Would the noise reduction of the Shoei allow a person to ride without the use of earplugs? Very good review by the way.

Curious, Tim. As a whole, what would you guess your ratio of highway/fast road riding compared to slow riding would be? And do you wear earplugs? I currently have an Arai XD4 and my only concern (not really a complaint) is the amount of road noise I get. I know I could get a standard full face helmet (I also own a Shoei RF1200) but after getting used to the wide open view from an adventure style helmet I can’t go back to that claustrophobic feeling.

Probably 60 fast two laners and 40 slow, dirt and gravel and some really slow technical off road. I was wearing earplugs with my last helmet but got out of the habit with this hemet.

I know you're busy, and it's not a huge deal, but would be interested in your thoughts, if you have the time. I'm currently using a Shoei RF 1200. Thank you ✌️🤙🖤

I’ve bought the hornet 2 years ago and have mixed feelings about it. The helmet is really comfortable as I had it custom fit, it fits me way better then the Arai. I don’t really feel any difference with the air vents open or closed. I ride a KTM 990 adv with a standard windscreen and i experience a lot of wind buffering and feel the visor yanking when I do a shoulder check (especially when I ride my wife’s Suzuki Bandit) I used to have a Roof Rat helmet (looks like an American Football helmet) which was way less aërodynamical but had less buffering and yanking my neck. Anybody already tried the photochromatic shield?
@FTAAdventures
@FTAAdventures 4 года назад
That is interesting, my windshield is pretty high so I guess that helps. I didn't feel too much standing up but those were slower speeds. I'll have to give it a try on a different bike and see what happens. Haven't tried the photochromatic shield myself.

I have had an E1 for about 2 years now and very happy with it. Expensive but fortunately I was able to get one on sale so it was priced a bit less than hate Hornet and the XD4. I had the same question. I’m in the market for a new ADV helmet and I can’t decide between the two. My Shoei GT air doesn’t ventilate as well as I’d want and I’d heard the Shoei wasn’t as well ventilated as the Arai XD4 - but this review makes it even more of a close call. I’d love to hear a view on this.

Spice Weasel I’ve heard the XD is hard to beat. I have a Shoei currently & love it. It doesn’t have a visor & when I wear a balaclava in the winter it compresses the foam. So, a new helmet is on me horizon & when I’m looking to drop 6 bills I want to limit the unknowns. I totally trust Tim, he is honest, has a kind heart, & isn’t selling anything:-)

Does anyone else feel that a visor helmet is overkill for adventure riding? I have a Hornet but I find myself using a regular full face unless my ride is 100% off road. Not any critical advantages to the visor for me
@ZSmith-yy4lv
@ZSmith-yy4lv Год назад
Visors are mainly made to block debris from getting on your face. Only really relevant if riding with others in sand/mud. They are good at blocking the sun in the morning, but other than that, the visor is for fashion.

What is your brain worth??? The age old question. I have been a street rider for just about 50 years. I can't remember the last time I have worn anything but a Shoei. I currently have a 3 year old RF1200 and it is the best helmet I have ever had....which was replacing the last best helmet which was a TZ-1...which replaced a Shoei ??? Shoei, for my money, has exceptional quality, comfort, cooling, aerodynamic efficiency and noise reduction that add up to an exceptional helmet for a reasonable price. I would recommend them to anyone. Which I did to a friend who started motorcycling much later in life. But this friend of mine, who has a much rounder and larger head (probably brain too!!) chose an Arai as he had trouble with other helmets fitting his not so normal profile. Arai is also an excellent choice as Tim has pointed out in his past videos. Point is, ride with a helmet that fits you but gives you the protection you are expecting in this distinctly focused safety purchase. Add some protective gear that also works for you (that Tim has probably also reviewed!).....but don't play the long odds of some who ride with no helmets or no protective equipment at all. Somehow, like the stuff you packed for ten years that you never used, you finally needed that on THIS TRIP!!!

RU-vid as I am told is not a huge font of wealth unless you have an extremely popular channel and personality to go with it. Content needs to be "captivating, and non repetitive and draw the viewer in and make you feel welcome. Speaking in a monotone doesn't help ....TIM.....
